The Black Halos with Real Sickies | Rickshaw Theatre
Jan 25, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Hastings
The Rickshaw presents The Black Haloswith guests, Real SickiesSaturday, January 25th, 2025The Rickshaw Theatre19+Doors: 7:00pmThe Black HalosFormed in the underbelly of the Vancouver punk music scene in 1994, the band was a sneering, snotty, slap in the face to the Seattle grunge scene. Their raucous live shows, particularly an electrifying performance at Seattle’s Rock Candy, garnered the attention of Sub Pop’s Jonathan Poneman, and they promptly signed to Sub Pop imprint Die Young Stay Pretty. They began touring relentlessly with label mates The Murder City Devils, and soon were sharing stages with big names like The Damned, DOA, L7, The Offspring, Social Distortion, and many more. Within a year of recording their self-titled debut album with Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden), the band was back in the studio with the legendary producer to record their seminal second album, The Violent Years. Released on Sub Pop in 2001, the album saw them reach new heights in sales and radio play, including a Top 20 single in Canada with “Some Things Never Fall”; the accompanying video saw regular rotation on both MTV in the United States and Much Music in Canada, helping push the album to the top of Canada’s Earshot Campus Radio Charts! stomprecords.com/bands/black-halos Real SickiesThe year was 2014, the place was Edmonton and the mission was simple. Spread the highly infectious pop punk contagion to the four corners of the earth and beyond. And, just like that, the first wave of Real Sickies was unleashed. A steady stream of demos and EPs quickly established the Sickies as a local virus to be reckoned with. The band fiercely escalated their fever pitch plans of world domination by sharing the stage with heavyweights Stiff Little Fingers, Subhumans, The Real McKenzies, Giuda, Mean Jeans and The Jolts just to name a few. A couple near disasters almost put the Real Sickies out of commission. Lead singer Ben ironically got real sick and required spinal surgery while a couple of founding members stepped down. This would usually be enough to sink any band; but Ben bounced back like a champion, new members stepped up and Real Sickies released their phenomenal debut album “Get Well Soon”. The band immediately shot out on tour making house calls across nation as many new fans happily succumbed to the sickness for the first time. stomprecords.com/bands/real-sickies RSVP on Facebook Refund PolicyNo refunds, unless event is cancelled. Los Furios 'Old Ghosts' Vinyl Release Showwith guests, The Vanrays and Paul PigatSaturday, February 1st, 2025The Rickshaw Theatre19+Doors: 7:30pmLos FuriosLos Furios is a Ska Punk band from Vancouver BC. Established way back in 2002, Los Furios have toured Canada, USA and Mexico extensively and have a devoted fan following around the world. Los Furios have played major festivals including the Vans Warped Tour, Non Stop Festival in Mexico and the Victoria Ska Reggae Festival. Committed to entertaining their live audiences, Los Furios perform an intense mix of punk, ska and reggae originals that hit the dance floor hard. losfurios.bandcamp.com The VanraysWith soulful vocals, deep grooves, punchy horns and memorable melodies The Vanrays take Motown from East Van to a stage near you. Formed in 2016 around a collective love of soul and R&B classics, the Vanrays are a group of Vancouver music scene veterans who’ve played in such bands as Swank, Polly, The Beladeans, Circus in Flames and 64 Funnycars. Their unique brand of “East Van Soul” keeps dance floors packed thanks to catchy songwriting and energetic performances. Since releasing their four-song EP the band has kept at it - writing, recording and playing shows around southern British Columbia to lively dance floors and exuberant crowds. thevanrays.com Paul PigatYou’d never think it to look at Paul Pigat, but behind that unassuming grin and underneath those Doc Watson glasses lurks one of the most restless, combustible musical imaginations ever crammed like so much canned heat into a single body. Blessed with a jazz man’s sheen, a rockabilly heart and a hobo’s soul, there aren’t many genres of music that don’t pull at Pigat’s wayfaring imagination like a magnet. In many ways, it’s a mystery why Paul Pigat isn’t a household name yet. Maybe he’d be a lot easier to pin down if he wasn’t so darn good at so many different things. paulpigat.com RSVP on FacebookRefund PolicyNo refunds, unless event is cancelled. In 2022, the group began hitting the road and playing venues in North America. From their hometown of San Diego to North Ontario, Chest Fever has performed in almost every state and province across the US and Canada with many highlights including a sold out show presented at Toronto’s revered Massey Hall on November 18th, 2023 - Celebrating the 45th Anniversary release of The Last Waltz. The same year saw Chest Fever releasing two albums that re-imagined both Music From Big Pink and Rock of Ages, receiving critical acclaim and showcasing how the group honors the music of The Band while remaining true to their own original vision. On that note, it should be abundantly clear that Chest Fever is far from a cover band. They are reinterpreting classic music with their own collective voice. The group like's to say “We are a band playing the Band’s music.” Our band is Mrs. Henry, performing as Chest Fever. While we can no longer rejoice in the live collective spirits of The Band, through the inspired work of this modern day band of brothers we can still drink deep from the well of cosmic creativity that has been opened to us by way of Richard Manuel, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, and Levon Helm. chestfeverofficial.com Mrs HenryIllustrious rock roots and a legacy honouring sound, Mrs Henry is a hard touring quintet from Southern California who captivate audiences from Mexico City to Toronto and beyond. The SSF Art Party + Fundraiser Launch | Interurban Gallery
Feb 8, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Hastings
Come celebrate the launch of The Social Sculpture Foundation at an art part with video art, performance art, djs and sparkling wine.* Dave Biddle—who you may know as © Linda Fox— will be debuting a brand new performance art piece. Kevin Holliday will be showing new media art. The Social Sculpture Foundation crew will be showing a new work, too. Djs for the night will be Pomegranate Molasses, Acceleration Radio’s resident dj Ephemeral Objects, and a secret surprise guest! The concept for the night is a meta-commentary on the charity gala economic model—you could think of this as a subverted iteration of that, so if you show up in something you’d wear to a gala, we’re okay with that. Our cause is admittedly radical: the Social Sculpture Foundation is building pop-up drop in centres where the street entrenched community can access vital resources like food and a temporary rest space, but in psychoaesthetically uplifting surroundings staffed by harm reduction peers, challenging the idea of atmospherically restorative spaces being something only certain classes of people deserve. We’re grateful to the Vancouver Status of Women for the community action grant that has us well on the way to completing our first pop-up drop-in centre in 2025, but we need to fundraise a little more to get everything complete, so come out and party with us in the spirit of democratizing uplifting, restorative psychogeographies. The project was founded by someone who ended up homeless, living on the street and in shelters after escaping domestic violence, and later on built the Social Sculpture Foundation in honour of the people she love(s)/d from that period, and to counter the “drear-realism” (to use Mark Fisher’s term) of the spaces containing the services the street-community accesses. Come dance and take in the compelling art in the spirit of this radical disruption! There may even be free canapes. The SSF is grateful for the support of the Vancouver Status of Women and InterUrban Gallery <3 *there’ll be other types of drinks, too. We gratefully acknowledge that this event is taking place on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish + Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

MRG Live presents Mount Eeriewith guests, RaganaFebruary 13th, 2025The Rickshaw Theatre19+Doors: 7:00pmMount Eerie I grew up five miles into the woods outside the island town of Anacortes, Washington during the 80's and 90's in a post-hippie echo that normalized saying hello out loud to the nearby mountains, waters and animals. As a teenager, entering the world of music and creation through the door that punk tore open, I finally found my people in Olympia. I lived there for 5 years and released records as the Microphones with the K label. Now I make Mount Eerie records, since 2003, and release them myself on a fake record label, stubbornly still DIY to the bone. I have a devotion to this life of creativity and subversion that has never wavered. These songs and works dig down into the bedrock of this place and try to bring forth a fresh exhale, a big picture glimpse, small beneath the sky, clear water trickling. - Phil Elverum, Mount Eerie RaganaRagana is a duo whose members alternate duties on drums, guitar, and vocals to produce some of the most unique and affecting dark music in metal today. The two-piece came together in 2011 in the DIY punk scene of Olympia, WA.
Held together by an intense focus on raw emotion and haunting atmospherics, Ragana shifts seamlessly from tender, mesmerizing vocal harmonies to piercing, heart-ripping screams and back again, yielding a highly idiosyncratic take on black metal that is heavy, beautiful and punishing all at once.
