The GRAD Foundation Presents 2025 Scholarship Banquet: Legacy In The Making | Odyssey Restaurant & Events

Jun 8, 2025 (UTC-7)
City of Los Angeles
Cultural Experiences
Event Overview: Step into an evening of inspiration, reflection, and celebration as we gather to honor the young men of the GRAD Foundation Mentoring Program. This is not just a banquet; it is a tribute to the legacy being shaped today by the actions, choices, and growth of each of our mentees. Theme: This year, we embrace the theme “Legacy in the Making”—a reminder that true legacy isn’t simply something built with time or age, but is formed in the choices we make in every moment. For our young men, their legacy begins today. It’s not a distant vision or something that happens when we’re older or after we’re gone. Every step they take, every achievement they reach, is an integral part of their ongoing journey. We celebrate the impact they are making right now, and the profound potential that already lives within them. Program: The evening will feature a three-course plated dinner with unlimited beverages, a year-in-review recap, and a special guest speaker. We'll also honor our graduating seniors with a special presentation as we send them off to college, acknowledging their hard work and the bright future ahead of them. And, of course, we will celebrate the achievements of all our mentees with awards recognizing the dedication and progress they have made this year. Ticket Price: $80 per person Includes a three-course plated meal and unlimited beverages. We invite you to bring your family and loved ones to join in this moment of celebration. Together, we’ll honor the present achievements and the future legacies being built right now. Additionally, your ticket purchase is not just a seat at the table, but a contribution to the continued development of these young men. Every dollar supports our activities, mentorship programs, and scholarships, helping us to guide them on their journeys, empowering them to realize their potential, and ensuring their legacy is built through every moment of growth. Parking: Free self-parking available at the venue. Thank you for supporting the foundation of tomorrow’s leaders—because their legacy is already in the making. Your participation helps fuel the journey, and for that, we are deeply grateful. Information Source: Guide Right Achievement Development Foundation | eventbrite

Cancer Sucks! But, Trivia is Fun! | The Fable - Eagle Rock

Jun 8, 2025 (UTC-7)
City of Los Angeles
Cultural Experiences
Let's face it, cancer's a real buzzkill, especially kids cancer. It's like that uninvited guest who shows up at your party, drinks all the good booze, and then tries to steal your karaoke mic. But we're not going to let it win! We're fighting back with our brains, our banter, and a whole lot of trivia! All funds raised are going toward the CANCER SUCKS team 's 20-mile CureSearch hike at the end of June. We are united in our dedication to make a difference in the lives of children and their families affected by cancer. Join us for an afternoon of mind-bending questions, belly-busting laughter, and a few "spirited" beverages. We'll be testing your knowledge on everything from obscure historical facts to pop culture deep cuts. And yes, there will be prizes – because who doesn't love the sweet, sweet taste of victory? Why Trivia? Why Now? Because, let's be honest, who needs a reason to flex their brain muscles while simultaneously enjoying a delightful adult beverage? Plus, it's for a great cause! All proceeds will go towards CureSearch , whose mission is to end childhood cancer by driving targeted and innovative research with measurable results in an accelerated time frame. Let's help them kick cancer's butt! Expect Trivia That'll Make You Say, "Wait, What?" (And maybe a few "I knew that!" moments too.) Our Amazing Trivia Host, Ben Leshen (Who may or may not have had a few "pre-game" beverages.) Delicious Drinks from Eagle Rock's local watering hole, The Fable (Let's thank them for donating their space. Also, brainpower requires fuel, and sometimes that fuel is tequila/beer.) Yummy food, TBD (To absorb the tequila/beer.) Prizes! (Think bragging rights and maybe a slightly used encyclopedia set.) A Chance to Stick It to Cancer (In a fun, non-violent, trivia-filled way.) A way to support your friends on the CANCER SUCKS team (Keri Fitzgerald, Elizabeth Pezza, Allison Chatfield, Christie Troutt, Gary Collins, Juanita Lourens, Denise Freese, and Ana Paula Arato Gonçalves) Important Notes Ages 21+ only. Free street parking on Colorado Blvd and in the neighborhood. Trivia starts at 3:15 PM sharp; Please arrive early to get your drinks and join a team. Information Source: eventbrite

HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. While it would be so interesting and fun to be the child of the wildly famous and groundbreaking author and literary lion, Erica Jong, it presented some painfully difficult challenges to Molly Jong-Fast, Erica's daughter. Jong-Fast has her family's great creative DNA, being a brilliant writer herself, who is now focusing on political writing and podcasting. But her new book, How to Lose Your Mother, is deeply and utterly personal. It is impossible to put down. Molly Jong-Fast reveals the struggle with her internationally renowned mother's dementia, while dealing with her own husband's cancer diagnosis at the same time. How can this be funny and unique? Trust us. Jong-Fast knows how to tell a tough story with searing honesty and stunning humor , weaving in the complications and struggles of being Erica Jong's daughter. The ravages of memory loss and ageing are cruel facts of life. But in Molly Jong-Fast's hands, they're something new altogether. Moderator TBA. Limited parking onsite. We recommend rideshares and carpooling. Please allow time to find parking. Did you know that you can make a fully tax-deductible donation? As a nonprofit organization, Writers Bloc Presents relies on support from people like you. Help us to remain a strong community as we continue to celebrate literature by authors we love, and explore critical contemporary issues. Please donate here . No refunds or exchanges on tickets or books. Books must be picked up on the night of the program. Information Source: Writers Bloc Presents | eventbrite

Writers Bloc Presents Evan Osnos and Ben Rhodes | The Ebell of Los Angeles - Lounge

Jun 10, 2025 (UTC-7)
City of Los Angeles

Literary Arts
HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. There’s a lot of talk about oligarchs these days. Their influence, their outsize impact on our own lives have become apparent especially in the last decade. The ultrarich live in a parallel universe, but their reach touches us seemingly now more than ever. While the wealthy were always powerbrokers, the ultrarich seem to have moved right into the seats of government. In his new book, The Haves and Have-Yachts , Evan Osnos, staff writer at The New Yorker , captures the almost unbelievable lifestyle of the wealthiest titans. Their self indulgences are a curiosity to be sure— as we gawk at their outrageous and lavish displays of excess, we laugh in disbelief, and wonder at the disparity between the haves and the have-nots: the power the haves have, and the fallout to come. This is more than a peek into the lives of the ultrarich, into their luxury bunkers, their homes, their superyachts and to their extravagant lifestyles: it’s a portrait of who holds power in America. Osnos interviews these billionaires, whose excesses are often shamelessly ridiculous, and he delivers a cautionary tale about what money can buy. Spoiler alert: a lot. Osnos is the winner of multiple Pulitzer Prizes as well as the National Book Award. In conversation with Ben Rhodes. Ben Rhodes is the former Deputy National Security Advisor for President Obama. He is a New York Times bestselling author, including the great After the Fall: The Rise of Authoritarianism in the World We Made ; an MSNBC contributor, and a co-host of Pod Save the World .

We believe the climate crisis is here and that this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but is lacking the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. It is only through the support of our private organizational and individual donors that EnviroVoters can execute this critical mission. Cultural Experiences
Living in a big city surrounded by so many businesses it's easy to forget that almost all of the food that we consume is shipped in. What happens when there's problems with the supply chain? Or if your neighborhood grocery store closes? Add that to the fact that the longer produce is in transport, the more nutrients it loses. Led by Jamiah Hargins , founder and Executive Director of Crop Swap LA, this Urban Survival Course will give you the necessary knowledge to grow your own food TODAY. The course will be held at The Degnan Microfarm , Crop Swap LA's newest microfarm in Africa Town/Leimert Park. Successfully take all 4 Urban Survival Courses and you'll be eligible to receive a Crop Swap LA Urban Grower Certificate. A healthy lunch catered by a hyper local business will be included in the course! Information Source: Crop Swap LA™ | eventbrite
