Musical Arts
A genre-defying amalgamation of divine vocals, soul-stirring jazz, healing poetry, with a rich tapestry of African, Mesoamerican and indigenous North American percussion and instrumentation, taking you on a cosmic journey of spiritual improvisation and beyond. Cosmic Vibrations is a supergroup of heavyweight musicians with a vast combined experience, an ensemble of 6 souls who approach improvisation full of spirit and without ego. Gathered for this very purpose by Dwight Trible, undoubtedly the most acclaimed and in-demand vocalist currently working in the realms of spiritual jazz, the band has been performing steadily over the last six years, building a reputation in LA and further afield for their electric, mesmerizing performances. Dwight Trible is an American jazz singer, living in Los Angeles. [1] He has made albums in collaboration with Carlos Gabriel Niño , John Beasley , and Matthew Halsall , releasing them on Ninja Tune and Gondwana Records . He was an original member of Pure Essence Trible in 2013. Mike Hobart, wrote in the Financial Times that "Trible has been forging his particular slant on spiritual-modal jazz for decades, delivering his love-is-the-answer message with clear diction, rich tones and a beautifully controlled vibrato. Trible's sonic range adds a dash of Isaac Hayes gravel to the imperious sonorities of Barry White, and, like them, he steeps his voice in the inflections of gospel-soul and the blues. But, having worked with the likes of Pharaoh Sanders and Charles Lloyd, he is equally in control of the nuances and demands of jazz." Andrew Gilbert wrote in JazzTimes that "few musicians have done more to cultivate the L.A. [jazz] scene over the past four decades" than Trible. Information Source: Resonance Collective | eventbrite

Michel Khleifi's FERTILE MEMORY (1980) – A Landmark of Palestinian Cinema | Philosophical Research Society

City of Los Angeles
Arts Film
As part of their July series "US Tour," 7th House is proud to present a rare screening of Palestinian filmmaker Michel Khleifi 's gorgeous, meditative, and deeply affecting landmark film FERTILE MEMORY (1980). The sole film in 7th House's series not set on American soil, it nevertheless reverberates with our nation's contemporary impact abroad. The first full length film to be shot within the disputed Palestinian West Bank "Green Line," FERTILE MEMORY is the feature debut of Khleifi, acclaimed director of the Cannes Film Festival triumph, WEDDING IN GALILEE . Lyrically blending both documentary and narrative elements , Khleifi skillfully and lovingly crafts a portrait of two Palestinian women whose individual struggles both define and transcend the politics that have torn apart their homes and their lives. Grandmother Romia fights an unending legal battle with the Zionist authorities who confiscated her ancestral land soon after the Israeli occupation in 1947. With her family scattered all over the globe while she works in an Israeli factory, Romia doggedly maintains a dignity and passion that for her are the difference between mere subsistence and tenacious survival. Sahar Khalifeh, a divorced novelist and young mother living in the West Bank, struggles to maintain a modern role for herself within her increasingly intolerant occupation community. Representing both contemporary Arab womanhood and vanguard Palestinian conscience, Sahar must balance the changes in her world after the Six Day War with the changes in herself after achieving personal emancipation. With painterly flair, Khleifi elevates the everyday details of Romia's and Sahar's lives to a timelessness as irresistible as the hauntingly beautiful desert landscape they fight for. Whether in a tearful lullaby or a sensuously performed lover's lament, the women of FERTILE MEMORY lend tender and powerful voices to their people's chorus of outrage. Michel Khleifi's poetic and powerful film puts a distinctively feminine expression on the ordinarily violent and male dominated face of Palestinian resistance. Dir. Michel Khleifi , 1980, 99 mins, Palestine, Arabic w/ English subtitles, Unrated, Color, Digital. Kenneth Anger’s Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome: Film as Magical Ritual — A Presentation by Brian Butler Co-presented by the Philosophical Research Society's 7th House Screenings, the Kenneth Anger Estate, and Los Angeles Filmforum. Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome is more than a film. It is a cinematic ritual that merges Aleister Crowley’s Aeon with Hollywood’s occult underground. Conceived by Kenneth Anger in the early 1950s and reworked over decades, it summoned the haunted glamour of Marjorie Cameron, Curtis Harrington, Renata Druks , and other lost avatars of the Babalon current. Following the overwhelming response to KENNETH ANGER'S LUCIFER RISING: THE OCCULT SAGA OF A CURSED FILM at PRS in April, Brian Butler — artist, occultist, and official representative of the Kenneth Anger Estate — returns to reveal the hidden mythic currents behind Pleasure Dome. Drawing on two decades of research and first-hand connection, Butler brings rare insights into the tangled legacy of this work : from writing one of the earliest major essays on Cameron (Disinformation’s Book of Lies), to a decade-long friendship with Curtis Harrington, to visiting the house where the film was shot and working closely with Kenneth Anger to restore his lost 1958 three-screen version, which he premiered to a sold-out crowd at the Max Linder Panorama in Paris in 2015. Part screening, part ritual transmission, this presentation features a rare 16mm reversal print from the Kenneth Anger Estate archive and invites you to step inside a magickal operation disguised as cinema — an initiatory vision that still flickers through underground culture today. Dir. Kenneth Anger, 1954, 38 mins, Unrated (Adult Audiences), 16mm film. Special thanks to Los Angeles Filmforum for 16mm projection.
