Our streets are deadly by design. Last year alone, car crashes have killed or severely injured more than 1,886 people in Los Angeles — many of them children. The traffic crashes in our communities are preventable, but our city is doing very little to keep our roads safe. The city's narrow focus on policing traffic stops does nothing to prevent the next crash from occurring. Without a new approach, crash deaths will continue to threaten our communities.
We can change that. Join us in person on Tuesday, May 6, at 6 PM for an important discussion at our Community Town Hall: Safe Roads Save Lives at Phoenix Hall at the Watts Labor Community Action Committee in Watts, featuring special guest Deborah Archer, ACLU president. Together, we’ll talk about how to stop crashes from happening in the first place.
*This town hall is hosted by Helen Jones in honor of Bruce Phillips.

What the Event Is:
This will be a night of fun, laughter, and ridiculousness as
15 people
take the stage to pitch their single friend to an audience of (mostly) single people.
How We Found Our Pitches:
We asked our audience to tell us about their single friend, with the opportunity to pitch their single friend LIVE infront of 150+ people.
What to Expect:
15 people will share a 4-6 minute slide deck (hence the 'deck' part of our event title) to a live audeince. After the presentations, the entire crowd will mix and mingle over drinks, games, and maybe even a little live matchmaking.
How The Audience Will Be Involved:
If you see a single who is pitched on stage that you want to date (or if you think you have the
perfect
friend for them) you can virtually raise your hand and submit yourself (or your friend) to go on a date with them.
You can do this with as many of the singles you like. Their bestie that pitched them, will review all of the interested folks and find the
best
date for their friend.

, a partnership with Angels Gate Cultural Center and Synchromy Music to celebrate the intersection of art and science in wildlife conservation. This unique festival will offer visitors a seamless experience of engaging performances, hands-on workshops, and informative talks.
The Open House portion of the festival will showcase our work saving the birds we love. Catch a glimpse of birds in care, meet our dedicated staff, learn from education stations and informative talks, and connect with community partners.
VIEWING STATION
See our outdoor bird care facility and learn about the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured and orphaned aquatic birds, including the specialized care they receive from our expert team.
EDUCATION STATIONS
We’ll have education stations detailing different types of bird diets, teaching us about marine debris, and a bird-making craft table for the kids.
ENGAGING TALKS
Join our Bird Rescue clinic staff for enlightening talks on rescue, rehabilitation, conservation, and how you can make a difference!

Because migration can be a traumatic experience.
It’s important for people to be of service, especially when they are going through challenging times and a lot of needs of their own. The experience of migrating as a refugee can be disheartening and even traumatic. Individuals and families can lose their sense of individuality, feel limited by societal stigmas and discrimination towards immigrants, lost, isolated and lonely.
New Arrival Supper Club directly counteracts these hardships.
We're
creating space and creating a bridge Los Angeles community to meet people who have experienced resettlement as refugees. Though we may not share a spoken language, we have a shared human experience. We all seek out connections, we all rely on our neighbors, and a delicious meal not only nurtures the body, but the soul as well.

, respectively) Jankovics directed the country's first animated feature film (

most psychedelic animated film of all time –

His brilliant career, with its focus on myths and folktales, culminated with his magnum opus
The Tragedy of Man
(2011). Nearly 30 years in the making, the epic spans thousands of years, following the archetypal Adam creation myth through the epochs, each in a different animation style – all gorgeously hand drawn. THE TRAGEDY OF MAN
(2011), truly
one of the most remarkable animated films ever made.
Nearly three decades in the making
, this staggeringly ambitious passion project is a monumental adaptation of Imre Madách's 1861 dramatic poem, a literary masterpiece so embedded in Hungarian culture that many of its lines have become everyday quotations. After writing the screenplay in 1983,
Jankovics set out on the seemingly impossible task of faithfully adapting the work for screen, bringing its history-spanning narrative to life through meticulously hand-drawn animation.
TRAGEDY
is
an epic spanning all of time,
following Adam (standing in for humankind) as he is guided by Lucifer on a journey throughout history
. As he experiences the rise and fall of civilizations, from ancient times to the distant future, Adam witnesses the cyclical nature of human struggle, suffering, and the pursuit of meaning. Over the course of this odyssey through the ages, the film
profoundly explores the question of free will, the eternal search for purpose, and the consequences of human choices, questioning whether humanity is doomed to repeat its mistakes...questions that could not be more relevant to our current moment in history.
Just as the core characters of Adam, Eve, and Lucifer switch guises with each new epoch,
Jankovics renders each chapter in a drastically different animation style.
Over the course of its grand duration (at 160 minutes it stands, firmly, as the longest animated film in the Western world), we voyage – stylistically – from
a lysergically psychedelic Eden to a rustically rendered Stone Age, a sumptuously animated Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece a la "living urn," a
strikingly cross-hatched vision of The French Revolution to a starkly stylzed dystopian future
(and more!).
With each chapter, Jankovics' creative dexterity proves just why he is considered one of animation's great geniuses.
Though it was released over a decade ago (and a decade before Jankovics' passing) to tremendous acclaim and success, its weighty themes and impressive runtime have largely kept it from playing theatrically in the U.S., where animation still struggles to be accepted as pure cinema. Now, at a time when its message is more vital than ever, 7th House is very proud to bring this masterpiece to The Philosophical Research Society for its first-ever LA screening!

Miranda July is a filmmaker, artist, and writer. He will show you how you can understand it by likening it to water, even if it’s a light source you’ve never used before. He will share his creative process of adding more drama to your photos.
Whether you’re a portrait, wedding, fashion or boudoir photographer, this seminar will help simplify your approach and help realize that technically, lighting is not the most important entity in a photo but the subtraction of light. Jerry will also teach you how to recognize good light, create good light and how to turn so-called bad light into lighting that has depth, dimension and drama.
