COMMUNITY TOWN HALL: SAFE ROADS SAVE LIVES | Watts Labor Community Action Committee - Phoenix Hall

May 6, 2025 (UTC-7)
City of Los Angeles
Conferences
Our streets are deadly by design. Last year alone, car crashes have killed or severely injured more than 1,886 people in Los Angeles — many of them children. The traffic crashes in our communities are preventable, but our city is doing very little to keep our roads safe. The city's narrow focus on policing traffic stops does nothing to prevent the next crash from occurring. Without a new approach, crash deaths will continue to threaten our communities. We can change that. Join us in person on Tuesday, May 6, at 6 PM for an important discussion at our Community Town Hall: Safe Roads Save Lives at Phoenix Hall at the Watts Labor Community Action Committee in Watts, featuring special guest Deborah Archer, ACLU president. Together, we’ll talk about how to stop crashes from happening in the first place. *This town hall is hosted by Helen Jones in honor of Bruce Phillips. All Hands On Deck - 15 people will pitch their single friend to an audience | HOUSE OF COCOTTE

May 10, 2025 (UTC-7)
City of Los Angeles
Cultural Experiences
What the Event Is: This will be a night of fun, laughter, and ridiculousness as 15 people take the stage to pitch their single friend to an audience of (mostly) single people. How We Found Our Pitches: We asked our audience to tell us about their single friend, with the opportunity to pitch their single friend LIVE infront of 150+ people. What to Expect: 15 people will share a 4-6 minute slide deck (hence the 'deck' part of our event title) to a live audeince. After the presentations, the entire crowd will mix and mingle over drinks, games, and maybe even a little live matchmaking. How The Audience Will Be Involved: If you see a single who is pitched on stage that you want to date (or if you think you have the perfect friend for them) you can virtually raise your hand and submit yourself (or your friend) to go on a date with them. You can do this with as many of the singles you like. Their bestie that pitched them, will review all of the interested folks and find the best date for their friend. More details on how to 'virtually raise your hand' will be revealed at the event. SAMPLE PITCHES Information Source: The Next Fun Thing | eventbrite

COMEDY WRITER Andrew Nicholls performs + signs "AS MAN IS TO GOD." | Lyric Hyperion Theater & Cafe

City of Los Angeles

Comedy
Andrew Nicholls, il miglior fabbro of the precisely calibrated gag, lets loose with a rollicking tale in verse as astonishing in its foolhardiness as the film shoot it chronicles. Reading As Man Is To God is like watching a master jeweler carve Mount Rushmore. We stare wide-eyed as the maniacal miniaturist brings off his magnum opus, one deft, hilarious touch at a time. The result is every bit as thrilling and endlessly revisitable as Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo , a rousing tribute to the folly and genius of our species. - Boris Dralyuk, Poet, Translator Information Source: Peggy Dobreer | eventbrite

Join Miry's List on May 10th for a special Mother's Day Brunch celebrating mothers from around the world. Our New Arrival Supper Club brings together community members and newly arrived refugee families for a meaningful cultural exchange through food and connection. This intimate gathering honors the universal strength, resilience, and love of mothers everywhere while building bridges between diverse communities. Experience traditional dishes, hear inspiring stories, and celebrate the maternal figures who shape our world. Your participation supports Miry's List's ongoing mission to welcome and empower new arrival families as they build their lives in a new home. About Miry's List We believe that intentional, individualized, and intense support provided to resettling refugee families in those difficult first 12-18 months leads to better outcomes for the community at large. The work that Miry’s List does is an investment — in families, in human beings, in new Americans. It’s about investing in them upon arrival because the need is so great and the impact is so real. Because migration can be a traumatic experience. It’s important for people to be of service, especially when they are going through challenging times and a lot of needs of their own. The experience of migrating as a refugee can be disheartening and even traumatic. Individuals and families can lose their sense of individuality, feel limited by societal stigmas and discrimination towards immigrants, lost, isolated and lonely. New Arrival Supper Club directly counteracts these hardships. We're creating space and creating a bridge Los Angeles community to meet people who have experienced resettlement as refugees. Though we may not share a spoken language, we have a shared human experience. We all seek out connections, we all rely on our neighbors, and a delicious meal not only nurtures the body, but the soul as well. Aqila & Wahid Asghary, new Americans from Afghanistan. Marcell Jankovics' THE TRAGEDY OF MAN – LA Theatrical Premiere! | Philosophical Research Society

The Philosophical Research Society's 7th House Screenings is proud to present a retrospective of mindblowing films by the Hungarian animation master Marcell Jankovics (1941-2021). Considered Hungary's answer to Walt Disney and winner of both an Oscar and Palme D'Or for his short films ( Sisyphus and The Struggle , respectively) Jankovics directed the country's first animated feature film ( János Vitéz , 1973) before creating his masterpiece and inarguably the most psychedelic animated film of all time – The Son of the White Mare (1981) . His brilliant career, with its focus on myths and folktales, culminated with his magnum opus The Tragedy of Man (2011). Nearly 30 years in the making, the epic spans thousands of years, following the archetypal Adam creation myth through the epochs, each in a different animation style – all gorgeously hand drawn. Join us on three Sundays (April 27th, May 4th, and May 11th) to experience Jankovics' artistic genius on the big screen! THE TRAGEDY OF MAN *Please note this event's earlier start time . Our retrospective of the films of the late, brilliant Hungarian animation master Marcell Jankovics concludes with a truly momentous event — the long-awaited Los Angeles theatrical premiere of his magnum opus and final film THE TRAGEDY OF MAN (2011), truly one of the most remarkable animated films ever made. Nearly three decades in the making , this staggeringly ambitious passion project is a monumental adaptation of Imre Madách's 1861 dramatic poem, a literary masterpiece so embedded in Hungarian culture that many of its lines have become everyday quotations. After writing the screenplay in 1983, Jankovics set out on the seemingly impossible task of faithfully adapting the work for screen, bringing its history-spanning narrative to life through meticulously hand-drawn animation. TRAGEDY is an epic spanning all of time, following Adam (standing in for humankind) as he is guided by Lucifer on a journey throughout history . As he experiences the rise and fall of civilizations, from ancient times to the distant future, Adam witnesses the cyclical nature of human struggle, suffering, and the pursuit of meaning. Over the course of this odyssey through the ages, the film profoundly explores the question of free will, the eternal search for purpose, and the consequences of human choices, questioning whether humanity is doomed to repeat its mistakes...questions that could not be more relevant to our current moment in history. Just as the core characters of Adam, Eve, and Lucifer switch guises with each new epoch, Jankovics renders each chapter in a drastically different animation style. Over the course of its grand duration (at 160 minutes it stands, firmly, as the longest animated film in the Western world), we voyage – stylistically – from a lysergically psychedelic Eden to a rustically rendered Stone Age, a sumptuously animated Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece a la "living urn," a strikingly cross-hatched vision of The French Revolution to a starkly stylzed dystopian future (and more!). With each chapter, Jankovics' creative dexterity proves just why he is considered one of animation's great geniuses. Though it was released over a decade ago (and a decade before Jankovics' passing) to tremendous acclaim and success, its weighty themes and impressive runtime have largely kept it from playing theatrically in the U.S., where animation still struggles to be accepted as pure cinema. Now, at a time when its message is more vital than ever, 7th House is very proud to bring this masterpiece to The Philosophical Research Society for its first-ever LA screening! Do not miss this major theatrical event! Dir. Marcell Jankovics, 2011, 160 mins, Hungary, Hungarian w/ English Subtitles, Unrated, Digital. Special thanks to Dennis Bartok and Craig Rogers of Deaf Crocodile Films. Special thanks to Bret Berg of American Genre Film Archive. An irreverently sexy, tender, hilarious, and surprising novel about a woman upending her life A semifamous artist announces her plan to drive cross-country, from LA to New York. Twenty minutes after leaving her husband and child at home, she spontaneously exits the freeway, beds down in a nondescript motel, and immerses herself in a temporary reinvention that turns out to be the start of an entirely different journey. Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman. Once again, July hijacks the familiar and turns it into something new and thrillingly, profoundly alive. About the author Miranda July is a filmmaker, artist, and writer. Her books include It Chooses You, The First Bad Man, and No One Belongs Here More Than You (winner of the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award). July’s fiction has been published in twenty-three countries and has appeared in The Paris Review, Harper’s, and The New Yorker. She wrote, directed, and starred in The Future and Me and You and Everyone We Know (winner of the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and a Special Jury Prize at Sundance; re-released by The Criterion Collection in 2020). Her most recent movie is Kajillionaire (2020). July’s art works include the participatory website Learning to Love You More (with Harrell Fletcher; now in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art), Eleven Heavy Things (a sculpture garden created for the 2009 Venice Biennale), the performance New Society (Brooklyn Academy of Music and other venues), the messaging app Somebody, and an interfaith secondhand shop located in a luxury department store (presented by Artangel). In March 2024 July’s first solo show was presented at Fondazione Prada Osservatorio in Milan, curated by Mia Locks; the show included past work in all mediums and a new participatory video series, F.A.M.I.L.Y. (Falling Apart Meanwhile I Love You). Her newest novel, All Fours, was published May 14 2024 by Riverhead Books. It is a New York Times bestseller and a finalist for the National Book Award for fiction. Raised in Berkeley, California, July lives in Los Angeles. Information Source: Book Soup | eventbrite
