Kristen Kish in Conversation for Accidentally on Purpose | Now Serving
Apr 29, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Kristen Kish, chef/partner of Arlo Grey in Austin, Texas; host of Bravo's Emmy Award-winning
Top Chef
; and host/producer of
Restaurants at the End of the World
in conversation for
Accidentally on Purpose
. Moderated by Alyse Whitney, food writer and author of Big Dip Energy. Book signing and meet and greet to follow.
A tender, clear-eyed memoir,
Accidentally on Purpose
charts a journey full of purpose, belonging, and real love—a “recipe for a life worth living” (Stacy London).
Kristen Kish never could have imagined people on the street knowing her name—not when she was a carefree softball-tossing kid, in high school working at a pretzel stand, and not even when she finally found her true calling as a chef. In those early days, becoming a chef meant tethering oneself to a restaurant and working in the back of a kitchen, not a television set. But working in the spotlight happened naturally, even if the attention was totally unanticipated. And like most things in Kristen’s life, the road was so much more winding and complicated than it may have appeared from the outside.
From growing up as an adoptee in the Midwest, to trying to fit in with all the other girls who were busy dating boys, to coming out and finding love when she least expected it, Kristen learned that, unlike a map, no set of plans or definitions can dictate or explain a life. In fact, accidents happen. Curveballs will come. And even the full-circle moments—like winning Top Chef to becoming its Emmy-nominated host years later—could not have guaranteed these opportunities.
In
Accidentally on Purpose
, what defines Kristen’s story aren’t the missteps or even the pleasant surprises that crop up but how she learned to find her voice and use it. Because while accidents may be unexpected, they don’t have to be at odds with purpose. And as Kristen approaches life’s milestones, big and small, with intention, she realizes at those junctures—the ones beyond the borders of the map, behind-the-scenes, and off camera—are where the decisions and discoveries are made. Where the unexpected meets the intentional. And that’s where things get really interesting.

Eat the Weeds! Invasive Plant Foraging Walk + Salad & Recipe Book | Elysian Park Arboretum
Apr 30, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Winter and the rainy season bring the return of non-native, and invasive weeds that crowd out the native plants that are extra beneficial to our local ecosystem. But here's the thing though, many of them are also edible! By eating them we can help the natural ecosystem--from bugs to birds to bears--survive a little easier.
In this workshop and easy hike we will learn about both the native and invasive plants growing throughout Elysian Park, practice plant identification skills to know what is edible and what is not, gather various invasive edible plants along a 2 mile walk, and at the end put them all together to enjoy a wild, foraged, hyper-locally-sourced salad.

you may cancel up to 48 hours before the event starts. Simply request a refund through eventbrite and I will approve. Within 48 hours I'll take it on a case by case basis. International Jazz Day 2025 | THE BARBARA MORRISON PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
Apr 30, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
RONNIE LAWS & DOUG CARN –
Double Feature Concert & Live Album Recording. Presented by the CA Jazz and Blues Museum, Produced by THEKarenA and Tim Morganfield @ the iconic Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center on April 30th, International Jazz Day 2025!
The event will be hosted by WBGO on- air personality Pat Prescott, host of My Favorite Things.
These legendary artists come together again after decades, to perform and record a live album in an intimate setting. This event will be streamed live globally with an intimate in-person audience.
Tickets are available for in-person and streaming.
RONNIE LAWS
~ A native of Houston, Texas, his family includes flutist brother, Hubert, vocalist sisters, Eloise and Debra; and saxophonist son Jaman. Laws taught himself to play alto saxophone, age of eleven. An eye injury sidelined early dreams of professional baseball, and his instrument became his all-consuming passion.
In 1970 he moved to Los Angeles and worked with legendary talents The Jazz Crusaders and Hugh Masekela. He played and recorded with
Doug Carn
who introduced Ronnie to Earth, Wind and Fire, where he played tenor and soprano sax before pursuing a solo career. Ronnie landed his first recording contract with Blue Note Records, resulting in the debut album Pressure Sensitive. Controversy erupted with jazz “purists” criticizing Laws’ inventive, nontraditional fusion style. Laws answered his critics by scoring unprecedented crossover success in R&B and pop in addition to jazz, and receiving multiple awards for originality in the process.
Laws is a proven natural at combining the exploratory heart of Jazz with the broader-reaching strains of Soul and Pop music. His first hit, “Always There” was one of the most popular, sax-driven, cross-over hits of the 70’s Jazz-Funk Fusion era. He ushered in the sensualization of the soprano sax with Quiet Storm gems such as “Grace”, “Karmen”, and “Just Love”. Pressure Sensitive, Fever, and Friends and Strangers (Blue Note 1978), the title track of his third album, all propelled to gold status.
DOUG CARN
~ A native New York City and raised in St. Augustine Florida, he emerged at the end of the ‘60s making his debut on record as perhaps the key member of the Black Jazz Records roster, releasing four albums for the label between 1971-75 that stand as all-time classics of Black Consciousness expressed through jazz. He is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and producer; much known for his organ and piano work. A key aspect of early success was the haunting and powerful vocal contributions of his then-wife Jean Carn, whose five-octave vocal range made for memorable renditions of classics like “Peace” (Horace Silver), “Little B’s Poem” (Bobby Hutcherson), “Blue And Green” (Miles Davis) and Doug’s own “Power And Glory.” The couple also contributed to Earth Wind and Fire’s first two albums.
Carn’s own luminous work on acoustic and electric piano on all these albums placed him firmly in the realm of contemporaries like Lonnie Liston Smith, Herbie Hancock and George Duke. His albums were elevated even further by the exquisite sideman work of a number of luminaries including Olu Dara (aka Nas Sr.), Charles Tolliver, Alphonse Mouzon and legendary Cannonball Adderley bassist Walter Booker.
Carn performed at Aretha Franklin’s Concert in 2018 in Detroit where he led Franklin’s band in a reading of her 1973 hit "Until You Come Back to Me."
In 2020, Carn teamed with producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalists Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. They co-wrote and cut 11 original tracks with a cast of studio players at Linear Labs Studios. It was issued as Doug Carn JID005 in December of 2020.

A psychic, a pizza man, and God walk into a bar– and end up in Katie Folger’s bed. Find out how on the sex trip gone wrong that is her EdFringe hit solo show exploring the perils and thrills of sex and singledom in the situationship era. Getting in Bed with the Pizza Man earned Folger a Best Actor win in 2024 and was named a Top 10 Theatrical Moment by The Austin Chronicle. After sold out and five star runs in ATX, Los Angeles, and at the Edinburgh Fringe, Austin actress, writer, and comedienne Folger is back in LA with a fresh new version of the show that she’s yet to unveil for a public audience.
Lauded as “witty, wise and phenomenal at physical comedy” by NOHO Arts, Folger takes us on a jump down a rabbit hole of beginner’s sexual empowerment, “[commanding] the stage like a general leading troops into battle– if that battle were against societal expectations and prudish sensibilities” (Theatre Village UK).
After receiving a saucy, kismet “invitation to magic” from an old crush Lane for a week of sexy time in San Francisco, Katie packs her bags in the blink of an eye and heads to the west coast. But a stinging admission from Lane humbles her high hopes for hedonistic adventure. Feeling rejected and unsure of herself, Katie finds herself consumed with prospects of love and sex, rebelling against the roles she thinks she’s supposed to play—pious girlfriend, perfect wife—with a teen’s angst, mostly to no avail. But a seemingly lame, dead-end session with a psychic named White Raven gives unexpected way to that foreshadowed magic, setting Katie on a winding quest of sexual misadventure and discovery—a hippie cuddle-puddle, an illicit encounter with Lane’s bestie, a curious collision with a pizza man—that ultimately centers Katie, sans pizza man, in her own delectable narrative.
*Run time: 60min; no intermission
CREDITS
Katie Folger is an actress, writer, and comedienne from Austin, Texas. She was the winner of Best Actor from The Austin Chronicle in 2024. An acclaimed actress on both stage and screen, her bold and memorable performances have garnered her praise from festivals like the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Sundance, SXSW, and Locarno, among others. Her work is geared toward more nuanced representation of women in media, inspired by longtime mentor Robert Redford.
Folger, a staple in the Austin indie film scene, recently returned to her roots onstage with a dynamo comedic performance in her one-woman show Getting In Bed with the Pizza Man, a racy, dagger-tongued comedy exploring sexual, gender, and self liberation. Directed by Matrex Kilgore, the show was named one of the Austin Chronicle's Top 10 Theatrical Moments of 2023 and enjoyed a buzzy, ravely reviewed sold out run in Austin and Los Angeles and a five star run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2024. In December 2024, she performed with Amy Schumer in New Orleans and at the historic Paramount Theatre in Austin.
She’s starred in SXSW Audience Award winner ZERO CHARISMA, Streamy Award-winning sci-fi series DAY 5, (AMAZON) Robert Rodriguez’s series FROM DUSK TILL DAWN (AMAZON, EL REY), Andrew Bujalski's RESULTS which debuted at Sundance, Karen Skloss’s THE HONOR FARM and Emily Hagins’s GROW UP, TONY PHILLIPS which both premiered at SXSW, and Johan Carlsen's DEATH ON THE STREETS which premiered at Rotterdam. She has collaborated with notable Texas film figures Richard Linklater, Andrew Bujalski, Bryan Poyser, Bob Byington, Karen Skloss, David Hartstein, Yen Tan, Vicky Boone, and the Austin Film Society. GBPM is directed by Matrex Kilgore and self-produced by Folger. Sound design is by Lacy Strong.

Breakfree Intervention skills training | Los Angeles 2025 | Breathe Life Healing Center Weho Clinic
May 1, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Breakfree Intervention skills training equips students to understand intervention history and gain valuable insight through classroom education and case studies, how invitational intervention works in the field. The learning lab experience educates attendees through method review, role-play, and other action practices. Breakfree Intervention is the trauma-informed intervention standard today and is designed to meet multiple skill levels while advancing each participant’s knowledge base.
Conducted by noted author, teacher and interventionist Brad Lamm, Certified Intervention Professional (CIP), BreakFree Intervention skills training equips participants to understand the history and methods of various addiction intervention models as compared to Brad Lamm’s proprietary invitation to change process, which pairs a loving family-infused intervention with a long-term family recovery curriculum.
This model is set alongside Kathleen Murphy’s action-method approach to trauma-informed treatment. Through education, case studies, and role-play-rich training, participants learn how to intervene using this cutting-edge approach to initiating Family Recovery.
Special thanks to this year's presenting sponsor, Carrara Treatment Wellness & Spa, and to our event collaborator, Lightning Step.
