BALANCE presents Miguel Migs & Jay-J with Lisa Shaw (Live) | The Virgil

Apr 19, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Concerts
BALANCE proudly presents MIGUEL MIGS (Salted Music) JAY-J (Shifted Music) with a special live vocal performance by LISA SHAW The Virgil 4519 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles Saturday, April 19th 10PM-2AM 21+ LIMITED CAPACITY MIGUEL MIGS - Once in a while an artist will come along that carves out a sonic aesthetic so distinctive it takes just a few bars of a record to know it’s one of theirs. Miguel Migs is one of these artists, emerging from San Francisco's '90s deep house underground scene to become the kind of artist who transcends the stylistic limitations of a genre so very few can. The veteran producer has been responsible for some of the prime records of the sun-drenched “West Coast sound” and continues to notice – and extract – beautiful, textured electronica from the most unlikely and unpredictable of sources. His musical journey began after picking up a guitar in his early teenage years and his first outlet was writing songs and playing in Dub/Reggae bands. In the '90s he connected to the soulful sounds of deep house, experimenting with producing electronic dance music and fine-tuning his skills behind the decks. Migs soon earned a reputation as a diligent DJ and an astute producer, and today he continues to promote a fusion of pure, uplifting, soulful and intricate vibes through both his productions and his wonderfully varied DJ sets. LISA SHAW - Regarded as one of the queens of deep and soulful house, Lisa Shaw's warm, sexy vocals have been seducing us since the mid-90s. She helped define an era with her releases on Naked Music, and continues to create timeless gems. Lisa has been featured on albums with King Britt, QBurns Abtsract Message, in a broad spectrum of genres ranging from Deep House and Downtempo to Drum & Bass and Broken Beat. Lisa tours solo as well as with DJ/Producer Miguel Migs JAY-J - With over 150 releases, Jay-J has won a Grammy nomination, had his own Coke bottle for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, DJ’d the 2006 MTV AVMAs and launched two compilation series for Defected. He’s also remixed artists from Jill Scott to Joss Stone and has collaborated with producers from Kaskade to Miguel Migs. As a producer, you’ll see his name on releases from Ultra, Defected, OM, Naked Music and Moulton Studios as well as his own Shifted Music imprint showcasing his signature, Funky House/West Coast sound. So let these Yelp reviewers do the talking: “It was hard for me to wrap my head around what a "cuddle" was and why it would "change my life" but that's exactly what happened. As a single mom and full time caregiver for my disabled child, I had truly stopped taking care of me. Coming to these cuddle nights was the best advice I ever took!” “This place is an amazing, safe, nurturing container for platonic touch and cuddling...It is a very well run program based on respect, consent and connection. Everyone was warm and friendly and I was completely welcome and comfortable. I'm counting the days to my next workshop.” I'm a Woman or Nonbinary Person - Got Any Tips for Me? Yes! Here's a guide for attending cuddle events . I'm Concerned About Gender Balancing - Got Any Advice? Check out my blog on this very subject for tips, ideas and strategies to make the most of your experience. Community Guidelines If an incident occurs at an event, I encourage dialogue and repair, when possible, between attendees. If need be I will put together a Community Care Team to help resolve the issue with a restorative justice process. Before meeting up with or reaching out to someone you've just met at an event, give yourself and that person a few days for your "cuddle chemicals" to settle. Specifically, three business days. Once that time has passed, if you want to hang out socially, and the other person says “no thanks,” be gracious and move on. Just like we do during our events. Here's Cuddle Sanctuary 's Code of Ethics . Land Acknowledgement This event is located on the unceded lands of the Tongva, Gabrielino, and Kizh peoples. WHAMMY! ANALOG presents BEYOND THE MIND'S EYE on VHS + Weird CGI Vibe Mix! 7th House's Animation Freakout Hangout is excited to welcome Whammy! Analog , LA's fantastic VHS-only video store and microcinema , to The Philosophical Research Society for a rare theatrical screening of what is perhaps The ultimate 90s "head film": BEYOND THE MIND'S EYE (1992)! And t hey'll be hooking up a VCR to present t his " Vapor Wave Fantasia " on the warm n' fuzzy format on which most first experienced it — VHS! But that's not all! They've specially created a curated mix of some of their lesser known favorites from the direct-to-video CGI vibe tape genre, personally ripped from VHS copies that have graced their shelves. Strap in for a ride through the world of digital video psychedelia! BEYOND THE MIND'S EYE (1992) "You are now entering a world inside the essence of your imagination..." For anyone who grew up post-Pixar renaissance, it might be hard to imagine just how mindblowing early CGI animation was to the masses. Animation has always been the medium that best illustrated artists' limitless imagination, and now there was a whole new box (...a big state-of-the-art box, replete with mouse & keyboard) of tools with which to push the boundaries of visual possibilities . Simply put, we'd never seen anything like it. Unsurprisingly, its inherent nature of uncanny, three dimensional unreality lent itself well to particularly weird and trippy experimentation – as artists showed off the technology's exciting potential. Recognizing this, enterprising young producer Steven Churchill (founder of photography and computer animation company Odyssey Visual Design) envisioned a series of films, made exclusively for the home video market, that would exquisitely pair cutting-edge CGI footage – sourced from demo reels, music videos, commercials, and feature films – with original scores by prominent electronic composers, creating kaleidoscopic audio/visual journeys. And so Odyssey Productions' MIND'S EYE video series was born, quickly becoming a popular fixture of on the shelves of Sharper Image, Radio Shack, and video stores alike. Of the four Mind's Eye videos released between 1990 and 1996, however, it was the second outing BEYOND THE MIND'S EYE (1992) that somehow (perhaps in nostalgic retrospect) managed to embody a particular time and a specific * viiiiiiiibe* so perfectly, due in no small part to the awesomely synthtastic score by the great Jan Hammer (of Miami Vice fame) ! Viewed now, from the age of hyperrealistic graphics and deep fakery, BEYOND...'s then cutting-edge animation is all the more surreal and beautiful – a shiny artifact that epitomizes Silicon Valley-spawned psychedelia that, for Xennials of a certain age (or youngers with certain vaporwavey predilections) is liable to trigger the same Pavlovian nostalgia response as that Windows 95 startup sound. Join us as we chug the cosmic Crystal Pepsi for the ultimate trip through time, journey past the outskirts of imagination, and (to paraphrase the film's CG emcee)"Look within our dreams...they can take us BEYOND THE MIND'S EYE! " ( Synopsis by 7th House) ABOUT WHAMMY! ANALOG Whammy! is a VHS-only video store and microcinema established in Silverlake in early 2022. PSYCHEDELIC CELLULOID: Awesome Animated Oddities on 16mm! 7th House and Animation Breakdown are excited and honored to host a very special program of mindblowing, rare animated films on 16mm – lovingly handpicked from an incredible private collection of prints! Featuring a selection of cult classics, long lost Oscar nominees, demented “educational” (how?!) films, and trippydippy deep cuts (not on Letterboxd!) from around the globe – many of these films cannot be seen online and have never been on home media…you’ll just have to come experience them for yourself! Long before the age of YouTube and Vimeo, 16mm was where it was at if you wanted to see imaginative and far out animation . Given their way-out nature, labor-intensive creation, and counterculture appeal, short films were the domain of psychedelic and experimental animated films – films that, despite their runtime, were often m ore immersive, ingenious, and adventurous than any feature film could ever be. Screening in film festivals, underground cinemas, on college campuses, and before midnight movies, these films allowed their creators to bring their singular visions to life, projecting their imaginations on screen for a hungry, curious audience. A trip back to the underground animation fests of yore, this one-of-a-kind program has been curated from cinematographer ( The Lost Record ) and cinephile Eric Cheevers ’ impeccable collection of beautiful and bizarre 16mm films. From oddball educational films to cult classic features to the rare and rad animation screening in this program, Eric has amassed a treasure trove of celluloid goodies and we’re honored to have been able to raid his stash to bring these rare, amazing gems to you for one night only! Featuring everything from National Film Board of Canada gems to Yugoslavian cut-out animation, weird & wonderful claymation to history's most counterproductive (ha!) anti-drug PSA, a throughly trippy short by Bill Melendez of Peanuts fame to a cult classic Zappa toon – this is a program that must be seen to be believed…and can only be seen here and now ! Open Sessions: Returning Students Only (April) | The Institute for Art and Olfaction

Apr 22, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Cultural Experiences
Please note: This open session is for returning students only. Aromatic materials are not included. Bring your own materials or purchase small quantities from us. Our open sessions for returning students only are designed as an informal, convivial space in which to co-work with other perfumers. Relaxed and self-directed (don’t worry, we’re here to help), these sessions are a great chance to refine a formula, work out an idea or just hang out with like-minded colleagues. Let's learn from each other, and make new friends. WHAT TO EXPECT Blending aromatic molecules together into a composed perfume is not only fun, but creative, challenging and - sometimes - kinda relaxing. We can't promise you that you'll make the next Chanel No. 5, but we can guarantee that you'll come away with a healthy respect for the art, science, materials, and skill it takes to make perfume. Relaxed and self-directed, these informal sessions are a great chance to refine your blending techniques in the presence of other scent enthusiasts and #friendswithpipettes. Open Sessions are the IAO’s longest running program. These Open Sessions for Returning Students Only are designed precisely for newcomers who have already attended one Open Session for First Timers, intermediate perfumers who want to explore new materials, or advanced perfumers who want to co-work with a diverse and creative community. As a returning student, you will be able to independently tinker with materials of your choice in a casual, social setting. We have everything you need: aromatic materials (natural, synthetic, and some accords), beakers and droppers, scent strips and bottles… All you need to bring is a notebook, and and open mind. Down the rabbit hole you go! TAKE-AWAYS + Explore scents and perfume-making in a self-directed environment + Refine an existing formula or work on something new + Bring home a sample of your favorite trial in a small spray vial + Make new #friendswithpipettes MATERIALS + COSTS As a returning student, you are invited to bring your own materials. If you do not have materials, run out of something, or want to work with something new, you may purchase as many vials of our materials as you desire. Materials Costs: $4.00 (5/8 dram vial), $6.00 (1 dram vial) Lab fee: $35.00 (required) This lab fee covers the reasonable use of IAO lab materials, including pipettes, scent stips, scales, spray vials, and our staff time. Please note that you must reserve your space in advance . If you just show up without reserving a spot, there is no guarantee we will be able to accommodate you. All attendees who have already attended one Open Session and familiarized themselves with our labspace are welcome, but these sessions are 18 and up (or 14+, with adult supervision). LOCATION The IAO is located in Los Angeles’ historic Chinatown neighborhood, on a pedestrian street that also hosts galleries, souvenir shops, production companies, design studios, two very cool parrots, and a cat named Kiki. Street Address: 932 Chung King Road Los Angeles CA. 90012 To find us: Chung King Road is a pedestrian-only road that runs parallel to Hill Street, between Hill St and Yale St. See more information here: http://artandolfaction.com/visit The IAO is wheelchair accessible. Note there is a small 1" lip at the threshold of the space. CANCELLATION POLICY When we host a class or workshop, we often order the materials to be used in the class well in advance, based on how many people have signed up (and padding a bit for safety). We also use class proceeds to pay our teachers. Although we realize that life has a funny way of getting in the way of the best laid plans, as a small non-profit we cannot afford to carry the burden of lost proceeds and materials. With all that said, here’s our refund policy for in person classes! – Cancellation with refund or credit requests made 1 week or more (7 days) before the scheduled session will be honored with gusto! We’ll miss you, but will 100% refund your spot. – Refunds or class credits requested less than 7 days before the scheduled session: We will refund you 50% of your class fee. Why? Because we’ve already ordered the materials. – Refunds or class credits requested less than 48 hours before the class, on the day of the class or after the class has happened will not be granted. – Cancellations or refund requests must be made by email (hello@artandolfaction) or via the Eventbrite ‘request refund’ option . Note also that event tickets are non-transferable. Information Source: The Institute for Art and Olfaction | eventbrite

The alchemy of a tea gathering has a mystical ability to bring us to places of beauty within our being. Beauty softens our hearts and we become more attentive to the voice of our true Self. The word beauty and the word beatify, to bless, share the same origin. We will be creating space for the blessings that already are to enter and manifest in our lives. The tea gathering is both a time of quiet contemplation and a time to chat and share. It is said that when people gather for tea, good things happen. So please join us to experience pronoia where the world around you conspires to do you good. We will also be offering a choice of organic flower tisanes - a healthy and delicious alternative to those who wish to limit their caffeine. Your tea master for this event will be Paul Kaye, who has spent many years studying the benefits of tea, meditation, tai chi and qigong, and sound healing. Paul leads PAL&G’s Sound Bath events, one and two-day Urban Retreats, and our Meditation, Movement, & Sound: An Evening of Inner Attunement Time: 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm PT.
