Leather Wrap Journal: Long & Link Stitch | The Velvet Mill

Dive deeper into bookbinding as you learn the long and link stitch! Students will learn a brief history of leather-bound books, and will receive guided instruction on how to create their own leather wrap book with suede or twine closure. Select your leather, thread color, and closure material to create a book that is uniquely you! There is an add-on option if you wish to incorporate beads into your binding as well! This is a make and take class - students will create one leather-wrap book to take home. While not required, it is recommended that you attend Shuttle Press & Bindery's Pamphlet Stitch class before attempting this binding - we will be building upon the sewing techniques we've already learned! Prior hand-sewing experience is recommended. Students can direct any/all questions about this class to the instructor, Dana, via email: shuttlepressbindery@gmail.com -- All students who attend Shuttle Press & Bindery workshops will be required to sign a liability waiver in order to participate. Letterpress and bindery tools can be dangerous, and can cause significant injury or harm. The class instructor reserves the right to deny instruction to anyone in attendance who displays impairment or an inability to use tools safely and properly. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, students who are feeling unwell should NOT attend in-person workshops. Masks are optional, unless otherwise mandated by state or local officials. If you begin to feel unwell shortly before your workshop, reach out to discuss credit options. Thank you for your cooperation! In this workshop, we’ll focus on finding the heart of what makes your work funny and amplifying it to its fullest potential. Learn how to identify that “state change” moment—the shift that pushes your comedy into new and exciting territory—and use it to distinguish your voice. Whether you’re working on finished pieces or works in progress, we’ll zero in on the core of the humor, refine it, and explore ways to dig deeper and go further. Get ready to hone your craft and take your comedy to eleven! INSTRUCTORDavid Iscoe spent the first decade of his adulthood writing and performing comedy in New York City, including for Comedy Central, The Onion, and dozens of underground shows that will be remembered fondly for years. He now lives in New London, CT and teaches at Mitchell College and Quinnebaug Valley Community College. Through guided prompts and creative activities, participants will explore their individual strengths, lessons learned, and moments of gratitude. The session includes: Creating a Safe Space: Setting intentions and connecting as a group.Guided Writing: Engaging in reflective activities with quiet time to write.Sharing in Community: Sharing pieces in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment.Debrief and Reflect: Wrapping up with a full-group reflection.Activities may include writing letters to your suffering, crafting personal experience narratives, creating gratitude-inspired found poems, or naming wounds as fictional characters. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORSEmily Marjean Coolbeth is a seasoned writer, educator, and caregiver who has studied creative writing at the University of Florida, through the Great Smokies Writing Program at the University of North Carolina Asheville, and through the Narrative Healthcare Graduate Studies program at Lenoir-Rhyne University. She is a woman in recovery from substance addiction, was a victim of sex trafficking, and is healing from other forms of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse. Optimistic, vibrant, bold, and compassionate, Emily believes that writing– in any form– is a vehicle for deep healing. Her current online literary publication, No Pain Wasted, is described as “an honest and unapologetic multi-genre literary journey exploring the light within the darkness, the love beyond the pain.” Erich Spader is an artist, adult learning specialist and currently working as a peer support specialist at a community mental health clinic. Having lived through and survived physical abuse and neglect as a child and the traumas of military combat that led to years of addiction and self harm, traditional treatments weren’t enough. He believes that you have to “feel it to heal it” and being creative through the arts can be a life changing journey on the path of recovery from almost anything. Using poetry and personal narrative essays as well painting and printmaking has allowed him to unlock a passion for helping others find what will bring them to that healing place that lies within all of us. Plenty of onsite bike and car parking and Tempe station is a short walk away. Open to women and men, get ready for an evening of learning all things track cycling led by @Cait Williamson from Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club! Here's what you need to know: We'll kick off the excitement at 7pm, so be sure to arrive by 6:15pm to get settled in (bike fit etc). We’ll wrap around 8:30pm, but who knows, we might keep the fun going depending on the vibes!The best part? It's all FREE for first time riders!No bike? No problem! We've got bikes provided for you.
