The story follows Amahl, a poor, disabled shepherd boy, and his widowed mother. One night, they are visited by three kings—Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar—on their journey to present gifts to the Christ child. Despite their poverty, Amahl and his mother offer the kings hospitality. A miraculous moment occurs when Amahl selflessly offers his crutch as a gift for the Christ child, leading to his sudden healing.
