Introduction to gelli printing with stencils | The Old Bell Museum
May 5, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Arthur
Gelli printing is a colourful experimental way to create monoprints. In this introduction to the technique we will use ready made and make our own stencils to create images and designs that might be suitable for making into picutres or to create papers that are brilliant for collaging. We use acrylic paints which can stain clothes so don't wear smart ones, bring an apron and we need lots of wipes to keep ourselves and our equipment and work area clean. so I ask everyone to bring a pack Young people age 12 and above are welcome but parent or carer needs to attend as well. I can't wait to see what you create! Every piece will be completely unique!

Tetrapak printing: the basics and with colour | The Old Bell Museum
May 11, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Arthur
this workshop is for beginners and improvers. If you've already done some tetrapak printing then come along and learn about adding ink and chine colle colour. If you're a beginner let me show you through the whole concept! Its fun, easy and doesn't have the danger of metal plates! We print small on a 3D printed microprinter so you can make images for gift tags, card and cards or mount the images as they are! It's quite messy so wear old clothes and bring a pack of wet wipes and an apron!

Watercolours- the basics | The Old Bell Museum
May 12, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Arthur
This session is to help those of you who haven't used watercolours before or don't feel confident, to practise laying down washes, experience wet in wet and wet on dry and so on, to work out how to keep colours clean, how to create rich shades and how to layer colours. We'll use some images for you to use as inspiration for a simple landscape, after we've practised the basics and you feel more confident. If you have your own watercolours and watercolour brushes do bring them along so you can learn to use them. The same goes for watercolour paper- if you have some you want to use, please bring it. Please let me know if you are planning on bringing your own materials so I know how much to provide! I will provide boards and tape for everyone whether or not you want to use your own materials. This is a relaxing and fun workshop and all about havinig a go and experimenting and not worrying too much about the final piece: you've got the rest of your life to play with watercolours. We think of them as starter paints but in reality they can be very challenging and very exciting! So come along and start on your watercolour journey... I look forward to seeing you there!

Arthur
Melissa Aldana (sax)
Pablo Held (piano), Pablo Menares (bass) & Kush Adabey (drums). Aldana was born in Santiago, Chile. She began playing the saxophone when she was six, under the influence and tuition of her father Marcos Aldana, also a professional saxophonist. Aldana began with alto, influenced by artists such as Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley and Michael Brecker. However, upon first hearing the music of Sonny Rollins, she switched to tenor; the first tenor saxophone she used was a Selmer Mark VI that had belonged to her grandfather. She performed in Santiago jazz clubs while in her early teens. In 2005, after meeting him while he was on tour in Chile, she was invited by pianist Danilo Pérez to play at the Panama Jazz Festival, as well as auditions at music schools in the USA. As a result of these introductions, she attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where her tutors included Joe Lovano, George Garzone, Frank Tiberi, Greg Osby, Hal Crook, Bill Pierce, and Ralph Peterson. She graduated from Berklee in 2009, relocating to New York City to study under George Coleman. CareerAldana recorded her first album, Free Fall, released on Greg Osby's Inner Circle Musicimprint, in 2010. Her live performances in this period included performances at the Blue Note Jazz Club and the Monterey Jazz Festival, and her second album, Second Cycle, was released in 2012. In 2013, aged 24, she was the first female musician, the first South American person, and the youngest person to win the Thelonious MonkInternational Jazz Saxophone Competition, in which her father had been a semi-finalist in 1991.The prize was a $25,000 scholarship, and a recording contract with Concord Jazz. Reporting her win, The Washington Post described Aldana as representing a new sense of possibility and direction in jazz. In addition, Aldana has been awarded the Altazor National Arts Award of Chile, and the Lincoln Center's Martin E. Segal Award. She has played concerts alongside artists such as Peter Bernstein, Kevin Hays, Christian McBrideand Jeff Tain Watts, and many festivals including the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Twin Cities Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz, Vienna Jazz Festival and Providencia Jazz Festival in Chile. She also performed with Jimmy Heath at the 2014 NEA Jazz Masters Award Ceremony, and was invited to Jazz at Lincoln Center by Wynton Marsalis. Melissa Aldana & Crash TrioIn 2012, Aldana formed a group, Melissa Aldana & Crash Trio, with Cuban drummer Francisco Mela and Chilean bassist Pablo Menares, a friend from the jazz scene in Santiago several years prior. In July 2014, this group released their self-titled debut album on Concord Jazz, a recording deal that had formed part of Aldana's prize for winning the Thelonious Monk Award. The group released their second album in March 2016 entitled Back Home, on Wommusic, with drummer Mela replaced by Jochen Rueckert. Melissa Aldana QuartetFormed in 2017, the Melissa Aldana Quartet includes Aldana on tenor saxophone, Sam Harris/Pablo Held on piano (or Lage Lund on guitar), Pablo Menares on bass and Kush Abadey on drums.
