Chasing Amy | Arthur’s Blues & Jazz Club

Theater
Fresh from the success of her last show -‘Feeling Good ‘, which honoured Nina Simone, acclaimed vocalist Victoria Geelan returns to Arthur’sto celebrate the life and music of another of her greatest artistic influences: Amy Winehouse. Both born in 1983, Victoria immediately fell in love with Amy’s vocal artistry and witty lyrics, closely following her musical career and her dramatic rise to fame in the early 2000s, which was cut tragically short with Amy’s untimely death in 2011. Chasing Amy is a compassionate exploration of the creative influences and development of the celebrated vocalist and songwriter.Again complimented by her band of in-demand virtuoso musicians, Victoria will take the audience on a thrilling and joyful musical journey, from jazz beginnings, through soul, reggae and hip-hop to the creation of one of the definitive albums of the 21st century: Back To Black. This show will not just feature the songs of Amy Winehouse, but also those of her artistic influences, which she regularly included in her live sets. It will explore the stories behind the songs, the treatment of her and her private life by the media, her struggles with bulimia and depression and how trailblazing she was for her generation, as a woman and artist. Amy broke the mould of what a female popular singer sounded and looked like but, more importantly, what she sang about: female sexuality, friendship, addictions, depression, family and the art of songwriting itself. This is one show that will stay with you long after the music has ended. : Victoria Geelan (vocals), Neil Burns (piano / synths), Rohan Armstrong (basses), Andrew McCoubrey (drums) Information Source: Arthur's Blues and Jazz Club | eventbrite

Is a traditional Mongolian instrument, renowned for its haunting melodies and deep cultural significance, will take you on a transcendental journey through the stunning landscapes of Mongolia They have played several concerts in Dublin to full houses and have gotten beautiful reviews Bataa was born and raised in Mongolia's capital city Ulan Bataar, as a child he became fascinated by music of his grandparents' generation, who lived a nomadic life in the steppe far from UB's urban sprawl. Around the fire In the evenings at a ger camp (known as a yurt in the west), entertainment came from playing animal bone games, story telling, singing and the sound of the horse head fiddle. Bataa became fascinated by the range of haunting and melodious tones that can be produced with just this simple two stringed instrument. As a teenager, Bataa took music lessons and trained in the centuries old technique of throat singing, he showed exceptional talent and now many believe he has become a master of this skill As can easily happen, the obligations of life got in the way, Bataa qualified and began working as an Electrical Engineer. But the lure of music was too strong and he quit his job to focus on performing full time. He has played theatres, venues and festivals throughout Mongolia and now his plan is to take the ethereal sound of the Mongolia steppe round the world, in the hope of entrancing audiences, just like at those nomadic campfires He will play a mix of traditional, contempary and western music Information Source: Arthur's Blues and Jazz Club | eventbrite

This session is ideal for those of you who either haven't done lino printing before or not for a very long time and need to be reminded what to do! In a really supportive and encouraging environment, with people round you who really want to progress, you'll be in the perfect place to design and then cut out and make your first prints. They will be perfect for mounting on cards making into gift tags or framing to remind yourself what an amazing job youve done! So bring an apron and a packet of wet wipes as it's important to keep both you and your work area clean. Printing ink can be a little sticky and good at staining! And bring some ideas for a design. A photograph, a picture or a design, bring a few so we can decide which is the best to start with! Your first lino cut won't be too complicated but it's a good opportunity to try out different cutting blades and have a go at straight and curved lines etc. If you find you're getting on well you might have time to produce a simple first print, and then work at something a little more complex for your second! But this isn't a race. Take your time, be relaxed and chilled, enjoy meeting some new friends and enjoy tapping into your creativity. Please note lino cutting tools are sharp so this class is not suitable for young children or those who don't have a reasonably steady hand. Teenagers (age 12 and 13 must be accompanied by a paying adult) can attend. Please note maximum number s are 4 people! so two adults and two young people, 4 adults etc. If a young person wants to come please email or message me so I can give you a discount for their ticket! A Viking Legend: The Descendants of Odin | Artspace Inc

Apr 6, 2025 (UTC-6)ENDED
Arthur

Literary Arts
This is a story of a legendary mythological family, a dynasty descended from the gods themselves. It has been told and retold over many centuries, kept alive in poems, stories, and songs that were memorized, chanted, and sung in the Old Norse tongue, the language of the Vikings of medieval Scandinavia. As nomadic families travelled and migrated, they took their stories and poems with them, a strong link that connected them to their past, ancestors, and homelands. After these migrating families had settled and lived in Iceland for a few centuries, scribes documented their stories, putting quill to vellum and collecting them into books. Yet the different sources of the myths and legends have gaps, incomplete explanations, and missing pages. A Viking Legend: The Descendants of Odin weaves together these gaps, combining information from many different sources into one book. Unknown characters are enhanced, mythological details are fleshed out, missing information is given an explanation, and a new and different ending occurs. Complemented by images of medieval carvings and classical illustrations, what has emerged is a mysterious and sometimes shocking story, featuring births and deaths, valkyries, tales of honour and love, betrayal and vengeance, battles on land and at sea, sorcery and magic, prophecies and curses, supernatural beings, a dragon, and so much more. Reflecting on my life, I realize I have written all my life, although never really classifying it as writing. Like right now, I am writing this form, although I would classify this as typing, it is still a form of writing. I have enjoyed writing and throughout the years and have sat and wrote poems and stories, either to relieve stress, or express some emotion that I was unable talk out. I realized writing for me is a form of therapy, along with doing art work. I have written some memoirs, and fantasy. I like fantasy, as fantasy can give a little reprieve from some of the harshness and cruelties of life. While my children were in elementary schools, I volunteered on school boards and wrote articles for parental newsletters. I also have written articles for the Logberg Heimskringla, (an Icelandic Newsletter), the Icelandic Connection, (an Icelandic (now on-line) magazine), and for the Icelandic Roots Newsletter. I have been one of the Winnipeg writers featured in an anthology called Talespin, from the Winnipeg Heart Space Writing school, with Joanne Klassen. I have written essays in University and have taken Academic Writing and Composition courses. When I began teaching Elementary Icelandic and Old Norse Mythology, I wrote numerous lesson plans and implemented them. The basis for, A Viking Legend: The Descendants of Odin, were my lesson plans. I gathered all the stories and put them together for my students for better understanding of the literature. The stories are classified as mythological because of the supernatural content in them. I am now retired and seventy-four years of age. A Viking Legend:The Descendants of Odin is my first book. I have more books in me to write and hope that I can. I live in Winnipeg with my husband and have two adult sons and a granddaughter. - Ainsley Bloomer, author of A Viking Legend: The Decendants of Odin Join the Manitoba Writers' Guild in celebrating Ainsley Bloomer's Book! 2 Day Collagraph Workshop with Loree OvensCome join us for a 2-day Collagraph Workshop led by Loree Ovens! Get hands-on experience creating unique prints using this fascinating technique. A collagraph is essentially a collage that is used as a matrix or a plate to create a print. Collagraphs are best printed using an etching press and they often show some embossment. It is a wonderful way to create prints without needing to use acid or solvents. We will be using oil-based water-wash-up inks. Day 1 - The technique will be introduced through example prints, plates and a demo. Then the class will create several small collages that will become printing plates. Day 2 - There will be another print demo and the class will begin to ink their plates and print using the etching press. Inks will be provided as well as printing rag paper, plates, some collage materials and gel mediums. Participants please bring: thin nitrile gloves or plastic gloves, a full pad of newsprint 18” × 24” old clothes or an apron, something to write notes on, interesting thin textures such as lace (optional.) April 24 and May 1, 1 - 4 pm In-person Non-refundable fee: $115 (WAAC members $105) Maximum 6 participants Women’s Art Association of Canada 23 Prince Arthur Avenue, Toronto, ON, M5R 1B2 416-922-2060 waac@womensartofcanada.ca www.womensartofcanada.ca Information Source: Women's Art Association of Canada | eventbrite

When the world amazes and words fail the rest of us, true poets step up to capture such moments forever, and then hold them up for the consideration, edification, and enjoyment of others … like precious gems best viewed from multiple angles. The poems (and photography) in this collection do just that, with the poignant and thought-provoking work of Doug Jordan and Sidney Shapira inviting readers to stop awhile and ponder what truly might lie Beyond the Gate. Supported once again by the artful photography of Sidney Shapira, this collection is a follow-up to The Gate and Other Poems on a Life’s Journey (FriesenPress 2021), a poetry collection that truly captured the hearts and minds of its readers. Examining similar themes as its predecessor, with provocative, inspiring, and occasionally amusing poetry, Sidney has added his own poetic voice to the collection this time, elevating and expanding its appeal and ensuring that this next journey to the gate and beyond is well worth taking Doug Jordan and Sidney Shapira have a long history together, having met more than fifty years ago when Sidney was one of Doug’s students. Although Doug left teaching for a few years to pursue a law career, he was eventually drawn back to the fulfillment of teaching young minds. And perhaps it was the strength of this “calling” that inspired his former student to follow in his footsteps, as Sidney would go on to become a teacher, a principal, and a consultant before his own retirement when he began pursuing his love of photography fulltime. Doug has spent much of his life writing and became a poet when he was only a teenager. In 2000, he and two other authors established “The Writer’s Collective” to support writers in Winnipeg just starting out on their journeys. Although Sidney is newer to the craft, with Doug’s encouragement, he has immersed himself in developing his skills with the same creative determination as he approaches his photography, studying with Poet Laureate Di Brandt and being mentored by Victoria-based writer/actor/activist Addena Sumter-Freitag, determined to match the high quality of Doug’s poetic offerings .Having recently taken up painting as a creative outlet, Doug still feels compelled to create poetry on a regular basis from his home in Winnipeg, where he enjoys spending time with his three children and four grandchildren .A new member of the Manitoba Writers’ Guild, Sidney also enjoys travelling, working as an agency liaison for the United Way, and continuing both his photographic and writing pursuits in his hometown of Winnipeg, where he lives with his wife, Denise Belanger, not far from their adult son and daughter-in-law Join the Manitoba Writers' Guild in celebrating Sidney Shapira's newest book! Please note that RSVPing is not required but always appreciated. Information Source: Manitoba Writers' Guild | eventbrite
