There was never a question of whether we would offer live entertainment, rather what kind of entertainment and how much? I love all kinds of music and if push came to shove, I’d say I’m happiest at loud rock’n’roll shows but because the building that houses our venue is also above a fine dining restaurant and below an apartment complex (and we like to think of ourselves as good neighbours), I thought about what was missing on the Halifax music front and realized there wasn’t anything that approached what I’d call a “listening room,” at least not one where a person could get a great dinner and have some drinks while they listened. There’s nothing I hate more than paying decent money to hear a great singer/songwriter and having the experience ruined by someone talking through the performance – well, that and not having access to the aforementioned dinner and drinks. Why not combine those two ideas and carve our own little niche? So, that’s the policy when we’re doing ticketed quiet shows. We also do plenty of full-on band shows – usually on Thursday, Friday and/or Saturday nights – and, of course you’re more than welcome to talk all you like in that performance environment. Saturdays have belonged to our much-beloved house band – The Carletones – for the past several years. The band has a rotating cast made up of some of the best players in the city (a lot of them from Matt Mays’ touring band) and usually fronted by the amazing Adam Baldwin. They play rock music. Our booking policy is that we don’t throw someone on our stage simply because it’s Saturday, or Monday, or whatever. The shows, when they happen, are treated as special events and we only book them when the talent presents itself. We pride ourselves on not only presenting some of the best songwriters and bands in the world on our stage but we’re also committed to providing a professional platform for our local, and regional, up-and-coming artists because it’s important. We have a disproportionately large number of world-class artists in our little region and nurturing them is part of our mandate. http://www.thecarleton.ca/https://www.facebook.com/TheCarletonHalifaxhttps://www.instagram.com/carletonhalifaxhttps://x.com/carletonhalifax Information Source: Craig Cardiff | eventbrite

OTHER EVENTS IN THE BEYOND THE MAINSTREAM TALKS SERIES: Bringing The Outside In Saturday 22nd March 2025 2:00 - 4:00 pm The Williamson Art Gallery Angela Samata CF travelled across Japan, America and Switzerland in search of what defines Outsider Art . In this lecture Angela will share her Churchill Fellowship research, looking at what and who she found in search of answers. Ron’s Place and other visionary environments Saturday 29th March 2025 2:00 - 4:00 pm Make Hamilton International Emmy and Royal Television Society award winner Martin Wallace will discuss Ron’s Place in the context of other visionary environments he has visited across the world, many in connection with the Channel Four series he directed, Journeys Into The Outside with Jarvis Cocker. In particular, Martin will focus on the liminal qualities of Ron’s Place – a threshold between the deeply personal expression of a single person's private obsessions and the universal experience of the home as a refuge for the self. Meet our speakers:What's Outsider Art?Outsider art refers to artwork created by self-taught or non-traditionally trained artists, often outside the mainstream art world. These artists typically work without formal education, art world connections, or regard for conventional artistic trends. The term is often associated with highly original, raw, and deeply personal artistic expressions. About Ron's PlaceRon's Place is a unique and extraordinary example of outsider art located in Oxton, Birkenhead in Wirral. This former flat was the home of self-taught artist Ron Gittins from 1986 until his passing in 2019. During his residency, Ron transformed the interior into a fantastical environment inspired by ancient civilizations, covering almost every surface with murals and sculptures, including expansive murals depicting Greco-Roman and Egyptian characters, underwater scenes, and remarkable three-dimensional fireplace sculptures shaped like a roaring lion and a minotaur's head. Ron's Place was granted Grade II listed status by Historic England, making it the first example of outsider art to receive such recognition in the UK. The property is now owned by the Wirral Arts and Culture Community Land Trust (WACCLT), which aims to preserve and share Ron' legacy with the public. Currently, Ron's Place is closed to the public to allow for essential restoration work. Updates on the project's progress and information on how to support the preservation efforts can be found on our website. Ron's Place virtual tour can be found here. Regina Wilson, master fibre weaver from Peppimenarti, NT will run an exclusive weaving masterclass Regina Pilawuk Wilson is a Ngan’gikurrungurr woman from the Daly River region in the Northern Territory. She is a celebrated artist, fierce advocate for Durrmu Arts and the Indigenous arts sector, and the founder of the Peppimenarti community – the permanent settlement for the Ngan’gikurrungurr people since 1973. The location of Peppimenarti is an important dreaming site for the Ngan’gikurrungurr language group and informs Regina’s art and weaving practices – skills she inherited from her grandmother and mother. Regina Wilson, Master fibre weaver from Durrmu Arts in Peppimenarti, NT will be in Sydney to host a 2.5 hour hands-on weaving masterclass. The weavings are made of merrepen (sandpalm) which are harvested, the fronds are then collected and then stripped in smaller natural fibres and then often naturally dyed with bush plants, roots and berries to make yellow, red, black, orange, purple, and pink. Regina will bring the pre-dyed and stripped merrepen as well as some harvested unstripped sandpalm for people to practice stripping. Any cancellations close 48 hours prior to event. Refunds are subject to approval. Information Source: National Indigenous Art Fair | eventbrite
