Our first Hand Dance class was a resounding success! We received incredible encouragement to continue these enriching classes. Eventbrite shows one date, but this ticket covers ALL DATES in January. Eventbrite doesn't let us sell individual dates so we had to set it up under one date. Call Brenda for any questions. Imagine this: you're at a party, the music's playing – maybe some classic Motown, perhaps a timeless jazz number. Everyone's having a great time, but what kind of dancing do you see? You might think of ballroom, but often, the music calls for something more spontaneous, more improvisational. That's where Hand Dance comes in. Born in the vibrant nightclubs of 1920s New York City as an offshoot of the Lindy Hop, Hand Dance evolved through the Jitterbug era, ultimately finding its own unique rhythm. These energetic dances traveled across the country, with each community adding its own unique flair. In the Washington D.C. area, the late Lawrence Bradford, a dedicated educator, championed Hand Dance, recognizing its significance as an original American folk dance. Inspired by Mr. Bradford's legacy, we're thrilled to bring authentic Hand Dance to Columbia, Maryland. Our first class was a fantastic experience, and we're excited to continue the journey! Join us for our next session, starting January 9th. Every Thursday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at the Slayton House Activity Center in Wilde Lake. Experience the joy of this social dance, characterized by its six-count rhythm and the playful interplay between partners. Come, let's keep this vibrant tradition alive! Class Dates: January 9, 2025January 16, 2025January 23, 2025January 30, 2025 For more information, please contact Brenda: 240-305-0978 Information Source: eventbrite

Illuminate Women's Music Concert Come join us for a night of empowering music by talented female artists at The University of Dundee Chaplaincy Centre. Let's celebrate women's voices and talents together in this intimate setting. When Illuminate returns you should go and hear for yourself’ -Richard Bratby (Spectator) We are delighted to bring the Illuminate Women’s Music concert series to Scotland this year! Illuminate has existed in the UK since 2018, with the aim to shine light on the work and creativity of women composers and performers. Events in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee, Paisley and Kinlochard will incorporate tailored concerts, talks, introductions, workshops and family friendly activities, as well as online events and resource packs, many of them free to attend. The series will tour newly commissioned works by diverse Scottish composers, written for an incredible soprano Stephanie Lamprea and cellist Jessica Kerr. These compositions will explore Scottish folklore interpretations through innovative contemporary music angles. Historical and established works by women will be programmed alongside at various concerts, to give a rich context to the strong but neglected tradition of women’s music. The event ad Dundee University will feature a new commision by Dundee University Student, Mandy Rose Campbell. ‘This important project is proving what many - yet too few, still, in the wider musical world - know already: that women have always composed music of exceptional quality, and that increasing numbers are doing so today.’ - Steph Power (composer, writer, critic). The series are organised by Angela Elizabeth Slater (Illuminate Founder and Director) and Rūta Vitkauskaitė (Illuminate Scotland Director), and funded by Creative Scotland, Marchus Trust and Vaughan Williams Foundation. For more information on future events with Illuminate Women's Music Scotland, visit www.illuminatewomensmusic.co.uk Concert: 6.45pm - 7.15pm Pre-concert talk.
