In this day-long intensive, lead artists Sofía Ontiveros and María Riaño will invite us into their choreographic process and by the end of the day, we will have a new work ready to be presented at Native Earth’s Aki Studio theatre. ABOUT THE ARTISTS: DANCE IN A DAY WILL BRING TWOFOLDS, SOFIA AND MARIA'S COLLECTIVE, TO EXPLORE PARTNER WORK IN THE WORLD OF RELEASE, RESTRICTION IN A HIGH ENERGY AND FULL EMBODIED MOVEMENT CLASS AND CHOREOGRAPHIC PROCESS Sofía and María share an artistic bond through their passion for contemporary dance, choreography exploring the different dimensions of partnering, and as Latinx people living in Canada. These components have built a solid foundation for their work. Twofolds seeks to discover the parallels and intersections of relationships through contemporary dance, bringing them to life with the cultural influences that have shaped and surrounded them. Twofolds has been able to work harmoniously throughout the years because of a partnership that complements their differences through their mutual goal for creating. Their understanding of give and take allows the pair to grow together individually while also supporting their shared undertakings in dance. Their relationship of push and pull is one with flexibility and room for growth. MARIA RIANO continues her career as a professional dancer and instructor in parallel to her experience in marketing. She is an emerging dancer, choreographer and instructor in Toronto. She began her training in Bogota, Colombia where she was born. Maria has had the chance to work in projects/ companies such as Citadel + Compagnie’s Citadel Dance Mix 2023 and Night Shift 2022 co-produced with Fall for Dance North, CAMINOS 2023 Festival by Aluna Theatre, Nostos Collective, Foolish Operations, The Bentway, Frog in Hand and Angela Blumberg. María draws inspiration in her art from constant investigation, the eagerness of life and human connection. This, as a result, is where María's movement derives from, a place that is open-minded and curious. María is a recent Honors Advertising - Media Management graduate from Humber College. In addition she graduated from (Ryerson) Toronto Metropolitan University from the Performance Dance program in 2021. While completing her undergraduate she achieved being on the Dean's list in 2020/2021, had the highest GPA of her program in 2018/ 2020 and in her fourth year was a recipient of The Hnatyshyn Foundation award for developing artists. All these milestones represent the person she is: determined, hard working and willing to go the extra mile. Her experience mainly lies in event marketing and project management. She has worked for companies like Cairns Oneil Strategic Media Company, SoDanca Canada and Kandy Media Creative Agency where she has developed project management skills such as leading teams, excel, completing invoices, billing, working on the backend of Shopify and Adobe/photoshop. Additionally, Sofía has continued their commercial dance training. They trained and performed with Kode Red Academy during their 2023-2024 season, a performance and dance training company run by choreographer Jac Valiquette. Versatility and diverse training is deeply important to Sofía, as it expands and challenges their mind and body as both performer and creator.Sofía deeply enjoys creating in her life; cooking at home for loved ones, writing, dancing, acting, singing, playing the piano. They value curiosity and continuously learning new skills and knowledge. In their works, Sofía questions and explores social constructs, and how they play on individual or interpersonal relationships. Writing is important in their dance explorations, whether as pre-choreographic inspiration or as part of the movement. Merging and embodying texts in dance composition aids them in both research and personal growth/healing process. They are constantly left with important reflections of post-choreographic research. Together, we'll invite the magic of collage to channel directly from our hearts through our hands.Create, cut and paste pieces with a myriad of materials—from contemporary to vintage, and everything in between!—to create memory. Craft a blessing, build a vision board or remix a love poem for things to come. The experience is the joy! Invite your curiosity out on date, or bring a kid, parent, partner or pal: collage is for everyone. No experience is necessary and all supplies are provided. Your hostAlanna Chelmick is a multi-disciplinary artist who creates with many mediums: paper, paint, makeup, textiles and the natural world. She is fuelled by nature and all its elements, animals on the ground to the sky, community care and connection. She finds joy in the smallest things and follows her intuition, moving around the world. Smiling at “strangers” is common. You will find her talking to birds, appreciating light and the way it dapples. Nearly thirty years ago, she was nicknamed Alanna of Love and it stuck. #whatwouldlovedonow @alanna_of_love The SpaceIssues Magazine Shop is an independent magazine retailer founded by Nicola Hamilton.
