Shigatse Travel Guide
Shigatse is situated in southern Tibet at the confluence of the Yarlung Tsangpo and Nyang rivers. It is the second largest city in Tibet, located 3900 m above sea level. It was the political, religious and cultural center of southern Tibet for centuries – numerous Panchen Lama were based here. The area is known for its spectacular scenery and traditional Tibetan culture. It is also home to Mount Qomolangma, Yamdrok Lake (one of Tibet's three largest sacred lakes), the castle of Samdrubtse Dzong and Palcho Monastery.
