Taihe facade is 9 in, deep 4 in, is the largest palace gate in Beijing's Forbidden City. Most of the bronze lions in the palace are platinum, and the bronze lion in front of Taihe is the only bronze lion in the Forbidden City without platinum.

太和门前有面积约26000平方米的广场，内金水河自西向东蜿蜒流过。河上横架五座石桥，习称内金水桥。广场两侧是排列整齐的廊庑，习称东、西朝房，并有协和门（明代称会极门）和熙和门（明代称归极门）东西对峙。东侧廊庑在明代用作实录馆、玉牒馆和起居注馆，清代改作稽察钦奉上谕事件处和内诰敕房。西侧廊庑在明代为编修《大明会典》的会典馆，清代改为繙书房和起居注馆。
