毛泽东1938年11月至1943年5月在此居住，1940年秋，因修建中央大礼堂等工程，环境嘈杂，毛泽东等领导人和中央一些机关搬到枣园居住，1942年又搬回杨家岭。1943年，毛泽东等领导人又从这里陆续搬住枣园。毛泽东在这里写有《中国革命和中国共产党》、《新民主主义论》、《在延安文艺座谈会上的讲话》等许多重要文章。1945年在此召开了中共六届七中全会，通过了《关于若干历史问题的决议》。1945年4月23日，中国共产党第七次全国代表大会也在此召开。现作为革命圣地，对外开放。
