Tianning Temple was built in the fifth year of Taizhong in the Tang Dynasty (851), formerly known as Guoning Temple. , destroyed by war, and soon rebuilt. In the second year of the Yuan Dynasty (1309), it was destroyed by Japanese pirates and then rebuilt. In the fifteenth year of Ming Hongwu (1382), it was changed to Tianning Temple. In modern times, it was renamed "Tianning Temple". There were two towers in front of the temple, and the east tower collapsed during the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty. In 1995, in cooperation with the renovation of Zhongshan, the archaeology of the east tower base was carried out, and the residual tower base was excavated. The existing one is the west tower of Tianning Temple. The reason is that there is an inscription on the pagoda bricks in the official book "Xiantong four years (863) to build this brick", and in 1995 when the West Tower was built, many pagoda bricks from the Xiantong period were discovered. Therefore, it is called "Chengtong Tower". Because the tower is relatively short and shaped like a tortoise, it is commonly known as "Turtle Tower". Tianning Temple Pagoda is a brick structure with a parabolic façade. The plane is square, each side is about 3.20 meters long, and there are five layers in total, which shrink layer by layer. Bricks are used to fold the eaves on each floor, and the eaves are far away, which is different from the common Tang pagodas in the north. The interior of the tower is cylindrical, with pot doors on all four sides of the bottom floor, and niches on each of the four walls above. The tower is about 12 meters high, with a wall thickness of about 0.76 meters and an area of 10.42 square meters. Tianning Temple Pagoda is the oldest brick pagoda of Tang Dynasty in Zhejiang Province, and it is also the only remaining example of the twin pagodas in front of the Tang Dynasty in my country. It plays an important role in the study of religious culture and Buddhist architecture in the Tang Dynasty. The West Tower has been restored to its original appearance. In 2003, the archaeological excavation of the Tianning Temple site was carried out, and the pattern of the temple east of the central axis in the Tang and Song Dynasties was basically clarified, and the original site is now protected.
In the downtown area, near the Drum Tower, I thought there would be a magnificent ancient temple, but I didn't expect to have a low stone tower on the side of the road. This is the Ming Pagoda of the Tang Dynasty, presumably also had a glorious and infinite past, but now it is lonely on the side of the road, even a minimum protection is not there, pedestrians passing by in a hurry, it is estimated that they will not take a look at it, it is really embarrassing!
The south is four hundred and eighty temples, how many buildings are in the rain. There are many Tianning Temples in the country, Changzhou Tianning Temple, known as the first jungle in the southeast, Tianning Temple in Xicheng District, Beijing, the highest dense brick tower in Beijing, Tianning Temple in Yangzhou, the first of the eight ancient temples in Yangzhou in the Qing Dynasty, and Lin Sen's handbook "Tianning Ancient Chan Temple" Tianning Temple in Zhangzhou City, Tianning Temple in Ala Ningbo only has the turtle tower and historical memory, and this turtle tower is also the oldest and only Tang tower in Zhejiang Province, which shows how sad the disappearance of Tianning Temple in Ningbo is. At present, in addition to the turtle tower, the original site has been transformed into Haishu Central Elementary School, so only on the sidewalk of Zhongshan West Road to erect a monument to commemorate.
Tianning Temple Pagoda is located on Zhongshan West Road in Haishu District, Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province. It has a history of more than 1000 years. It is the only Tang Pagoda in Zhejiang Province and Ningbo City. May there be two, one damaged, and the remaining one is the West Tower.
Ningbo is also a part of the modern five-port trade, which shows its important position. Put down your luggage and go to Drum Tower for a turn. On the way to the hotel, you can see a small square pagoda. Close to it, the brick pagoda of Tang Dynasty, the West pagoda of Tianning Temple, the national key cultural relics protection unit, the small pagoda is standing by the side of Zhongshan West Road. The former Tianning Temple has disappeared and the East pagoda no longer exists. This West pagoda has become a landmark here after restoration.
Historical cultural relics place, the tower is relatively small, but the history is long
At that time, walking from Drum Tower to Tianyi Pavilion, I inadvertently passed by and saw that there was a tower in the city. The tower looked worn out by mail. There were five stories of brick structure. Some of the bricks fell out. There were Buddha statues in the exterior of the tower, and a low fence surrounded by a stele. Only then did I know whether it was Tianning Temple in Ningbo or a key cultural relic protection unit in the country. By the way, no tickets, just look around, because it's just a small tower, haha.
