Baoguo Temple is located at the foot of Lingshan Mountain in Hongtang Town, Jiangbei District, Ningbo City. It was founded during the Eastern Han Dynasty and was originally named Lingshan Temple. Baoguo Temple is not famous for its religious temple, but for its exquisite and unparalleled architectural craftsmanship that is breathtaking. The Mahavira Hall (also known as the Beamless Hall) inside the temple is one of the oldest and most intact wooden structures south of the Yangtze River, containing ancient relics such as the Mahavira Hall, Heavenly King Hall, Tang Dynasty pagoda, Guanyin Hall, and Pure Land Pool. The dust-free Mahavira Hall for a thousand years: The Mahavira Hall was rebuilt in the sixth year of Dazhong Xiangfu of the Northern Song Dynasty (1013) and is one of the oldest and most intact wooden structures south of the Yangtze River. The use of small pieces to create large four-segment melon-ridge columns is the earliest example in China, which is not only material-saving but also strong and beautiful, and is rarely seen in existing ancient wooden structures; the lan'e (decorative architrave) on both shoulders have curled ends, and under the lan'e, cicada belly tie curtains are used, with seven red and eight white painted decorations on the architrave. These unique designs make the structure of the hall extremely scientific, not only maintaining air circulation to keep the hall free of cobwebs and dust and clean all year round but also the entire hall does not use a single iron nail. Instead, it relies on the ingenious interconnection between the dougong (bracket sets) and precise mortise and tenon techniques to firmly combine the components together, supporting the roof of the hall that weighs more than 50 tons. In March 1961, it was announced by the State Council as one of the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
