Houses of Parliament

The House of Parliament, also known as the Palace of Westminster, is located on the Thames River, is the seat of the British Parliament (including the House of Lords and the House of Commons), one of the representative works of Gothic Renaissance architecture, and was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1987. The bell tower in the northwest corner is the famous location of Big Ben. The building includes about 1,100 separate rooms, 100 staircases and 1 km of corridors. Although the palaces today are largely rebuilt in the 19th century, many of the historic sites of the original building, such as the Westminster Hall, date back to 1097. The Westminster Hall is often used today for major public ceremonies such as pre-State funeral displays.
