Probably the hosts do not need that travelers of non-Japanese nationality understand, in honor of whom and what this monument is built. No words in English. Everything is only Japanese. Stop at the stone. By ...
Even if I hear "the role of the southwest", I only remember learning from the history class, but as expected, there is a monument in Kumamoto. It seems that this area around Kumamoto Castle became a fierce battlefield, but now it is "the strong people are the traces of dreams".
On our trip to southern and central Kyushu, we saw the scars of the Seinan War in several places. The Seinan War started in 1897, but the first battle of the army led by Takamori Saigo was Kumamoto Castle protected by the new government army. This stone monument that describes the fact was at the entrance to the south side of Kumamoto Castle. I was impressed that Kumamoto Castle, which did not fall in the battle since the Meiji era, is truly one of the three famous castles in Japan.

At the entrance from the south side to Kumamoto Castle, there was a "Southwest role retrospective monument" at the stone wall just across the Yukiyuki Bridge. The role of Southwest, which is said to be the last civil war that occurred in Japan. It seems that the offensive and defense at Kumamoto Castle was a fierce battle. There was an explanation under the stone monument, and it was also recorded that this stone monument was created to commemorate the 120 year from the role of Southwest along with the intensity of the battle.
This Kumamoto Castle was a fierce battlefield during the Seinan War. The new government side held up the castle and became a big turning point. It is located a little up the Gyokozaka across the bridge.
