Saishang Old Street

Saishang Old Street is a historic street in the old town area of Hohhot featuring Ming and Qing architectural styles, with a history dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. After Dazhao Temple was built, a market gradually formed on the west side in front of the temple, marking the origin of the old street. The current streetscape has undergone comprehensive renovation, preserving its traditional style by restoring it to its original appearance. Brick-and-wood buildings with blue bricks and gray tiles line both sides of the street, while flying eaves, brick carvings, and traditional shop signs showcase the streetscape of the former Guihua City. This area has been a hub for commercial activities since the Ming and Qing dynasties, where furs, dairy products, tea, and silk were traded between the grasslands and the Central Plains. Today, you can find antiques, calligraphy and paintings, jade, coins, leather paintings, leather goods, sheep-horn combs, and ethnic-style accessories along the street, and some shops also showcase traditional handicrafts such as wool felt pyrography. The district retains a certain ethnic cultural character, with the architecture, shops, and handicrafts collectively forming the overall character of the old street. At night, lanterns and shop lights illuminate the street, and the blue-brick and gray-tiled alleys present a view different from that of the daytime.Hohhot · 36.6km from Wuchuan

敕勒川高山草原is known by locals as Huanghuawopu Grassland and is a pristine alpine meadow. It is almost untouched: the pasture follows the terrain from the foot of the mountain all the way to the summit, forming a rolling, three-dimensional grassland view. Standing on the slope and looking around, the Yinshan Mountains ridge winds in the distance, and the grass waves roll with the wind nearby, which is the real-life scene depicted in the ballad "Chilechuan, under the Yinshan Mountains." In summer, the pasture is dotted with wildflowers, cattle and sheep are scattered across the slopes grazing, and occasionally herders ride by on horseback. If you want to climb, you can hike along the slope, with scenery under your feet the whole way. In the evening, the sunset glow casts a warm hue over the entire meadow. Finding a slope to sit on, feel the breeze, watch the clouds, and wait for the sunset is quite pleasant.Hohhot · 30.5km from Wuchuan

Wuta Temple, formerly known as Cideng Temple, is located in the southeast of the old city of Hohhot. Once all the temple buildings collapsed, only this pagoda was left, so later generations learned that there was a temple here, and it was named Wuta Temple when it was rebuilt. Wuta Temple is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery and the birthplace of Tibetan Buddhism in Mongolia. The south of Wuta Temple faces Wuta Temple Square, and the entrance is also here. The layout of Wuta Temple is typical of the central axis of the Han nationality. The central axis runs from north to south, and the two sides are strictly symmetrical. The temple is divided into three courtyards, namely the Sanshi Buddha Temple in the south, the Cultural Exhibition Court in the middle and the Cideng Temple in the north. The area of Wuta Temple is not large, with a depth of only about 150 meters. Entering the temple from the south gate of Wuta Temple, there are small white pagodas on both sides in the south of the park, which has the characteristics of Tibetan Buddhism. Directly opposite is the Sanshi Buddha Hall. The architecture of the Sanshi Buddha Hall not only has the characteristics of Han palaces, but also the style of ethnic minorities and Tibetans. This is also the general style of the entire temple building. After passing through the Sanshi Buddha Hall, you arrive at the courtyard in the middle. The building opposite is clearly written with "Hushizhao Temple Cultural Exhibition". Inside the building of the temple culture exhibition, there are historical portraits of Tsongkhapa and other figures on the left wall, and on the right side are the pictures of the existing Vajra seat relic pagoda in my country, reflecting the long history of the temple culture in Hohhot. Then came to the courtyard in the north, in the middle of the courtyard is the main hall of Cideng Temple, behind the main hall is the relic pagoda. This stupa was built in the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty and is about 16 meters high. When visiting the Wuta Temple, you can not only watch it from the outside, but also go up to the top of the pagoda, overlooking the whole temple, with a good view. There is a Mongolian astronomical map stone carving on the north wall behind the stupa. The diameter of the astronomical map is 144.5 cm.Hohhot · 37.1km from Wuchuan

Great Mosque

Great Mosque is one of the older and larger mosques in Hohhot. It was founded during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty and has since undergone expansions and multiple renovations, gradually evolving into its current architectural layout. The mosque primarily features traditional Chinese architectural style combined with Islamic decorative art. With its grey bricks and tiles and orderly layout, its architectural style differs from the common domed, minaret-style mosques. The mosque gate faces west and is 3 bays wide, featuring a hip-and-gable roof gatehouse with eaves. Upon entering the main gate, you can see the back wall of the main prayer hall, inscribed with phrases such as "The Oneness of God." The main prayer hall is the primary building of the mosque, 5 bays wide, with the front eaves separated by brick columns. The roof features an interlocking structure connected by multiple pavilions, creating distinct layers. Lecture halls are located on both sides in front of the hall, and an ablution room is located in the backyard. The Moon-Watching Tower in the southwest corner is a hexagonal brick-and-wood pavilion topped with a hexagonal pyramidal roof, featuring a spiral staircase inside. During Ramadan, people used to watch for the new moon from the tower to determine relevant dates. The mosque also preserves handwritten Arabic copies of the Quran and several ancient steles recording the history of the mosque. The architecture, steles, and documents together showcase the historical character of the mosque that has endured to this day.Hohhot · 35.7km from Wuchuan

It's on par with the National Museum of China. If you like the National Museum, you definitely should visit. It has many well-preserved treasures and gold artifacts. The restaurant on the first floor is reasonably priced, but the sign is blocked; be sure to ask a staff member for directions. They serve excellent Inner Mongolian specialties! 👍🏻

On August 31st, I took advantage of the weekend for a two-day, one-night special forces tour of Hohhot. It happened to rain, so I'm especially grateful to the two train drivers who drove my son and me to the door to prevent us from getting soaked. Two weeks in advance was perfect. It's a bit chilly in the mornings and evenings now, so you can rent an electric scooter and combine the train ride with walking.

It's close to Jokhang Temple, the scenery is very good, the overall environment is good, the price is reasonable, and the service at each stall is very warm, polite and thoughtful. There are 3 cute lambs on the right hand side of the travel photography booth just 50 meters after entering the old street. I took out my mobile phone to take a photo of the lambs eating grass, but was scolded by the female boss. She said that I couldn't take photos if I didn't travel photography. Her words were very unpleasant, which immediately affected my mood for traveling. I was particularly upset. If you can't take photos, don't put them on the road. Alas~ It affects the overall image of the old street too much.

Banhalagou is a magical place with beautiful scenery that will make you doubt your life! There are clear streams, verdant forests, and all kinds of wild flowers and grasses. Hiking enthusiasts can walk along the bottom of the gully and feel the wonders of nature. Remember to bring your camera, as every shot you take will be a blockbuster! But be careful with your feet, don't be so dazzled by the beautiful scenery that you fall flat on your face.

This is what a real alpine meadow feels like—primitive, breathtaking, and truly beautiful. The Chulechuan Park in the city isn't even in the same league; that one's just a park. I'm so glad I read the travel guide beforehand.

The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is the pinnacle of ancient architecture in Shanxi. Unlike the "Liao and Jin art" of Huayan Temple, it is a "wooden miracle" that will shock you purely with its mechanics and structure.

No matter when you come to Hohhot, I recommend visiting the Five Pagoda Temple. It's similar to a certain attraction in Beijing, but also different, and fully reflects the local cultural development.

As for the attractions in Hohhot, it is still a place worth visiting, and it is also ranked very high among the domestic mosques for its Arabic style. It is said that many groups also come to check in, so it is best to go early, or before closing in the afternoon, you will have a good travel experience, and the Hui Muslim food around is also good.
