Between the gateposts were four Russian soldiers, armoured, armed with shields and guns, with quots engraved on their fingers; France expelled and Moscow liberated; and the lintel was decorated with the city signs of 44 Russian cities fighting Napoleon's army. The whole Arc de Triomphe is covered with white stone, which stands out against the black cylinder.
