天门洞以其接地通天的态势，成为人们心中通天的门户，而通往天门洞的盘山公路也因此被称为“通天大道”。更为神奇的是，在公路竣工的时候，人们惊奇地发现，这条顺山势修建的通天大道刚好九十九个弯，暗合了“天有九重，云有九霄”之意，这也许是苍天于冥冥之中的惠赐吧！通天大道以进山时的标志门为起点，一直通达天门洞脚下，全长 10.77 公里 ，但就在这么短的距离里，它的海拔却从 200 米 急剧提升到了 1300 米 ，大道两侧绝壁千仞，空谷幽深， 180 度的急弯此消而彼长，层层叠起， “ 堪称天下第一公路奇观 ” 。 中国书法协会常务副会长 沈鹏先生走过通天大道后欣然为其题字“曲道通天”，字体遒劲挺拔，与通天大道的奇绝天下相融为一体。通天大道于 1998 年开始修建，因天门山独特的地质和气候所局限，至 2004 年始得全面贯通，历时六年余，共耗资 1 亿元人民币。整个工程充满着艰辛卓绝，它凝聚着全体施工人员的智慧和心血， 其势惊险奇绝，荡气回肠，以 蜿蜒迂回穿行于山体绝壁之天险而成为天下第一公路奇观。游览通天大道，令人感受最深的也许就是一个“惊”字。惊“通天大道”蜿延峻巡于群山绝壁之上的绝险，惊“通天大道”艰苦建筑于壁立万倾之中的奇伟，惊“通天大道”玉带飘扬于寰宇苍穹之间的人类创造史的奇迹。
