I really enjoyed this quirky and unusual little stop on my trip to Margate. It wont take up much time but as long as you know tat ahead of time its quite a magical little experience. While I was there there were both young and old enjoying the little walk round the grotto. Lovely gift shop selling lots of retro Margate goodies too.

The shell cave is a mysterious cave in England located in Margate. In 1835, a farmer in Kent dug a pond in his field, and suddenly the soil in a place collapsed, revealing a hole in the hole, which was dark and could not see clearly. The farmer used a rope to hang his son down to explore. It turned out that this turned out to be a cave full of shells around, there were oysters, scallops, snails, etc., and various shells were laid out in various patterns. In the process of further excavation, it was found that there is also a 2.4 meter high, 21 meters long laneway that leads directly to the grottoes, all covered with shells, there are about 4.6 million shells, it is simply beautiful. The grotto was later named Shell Grotto Margate( Margate Shell Grottoes), and it was open to the public in 1838. However, who built the grotto and what it was used for is still a mystery until now. It should be explained that the grotto has been a private property from the beginning of its discovery to the present. As a cultural heritage and tourist attraction, the British government can only supervise its protection work and cannot turn it into state ownership. That is why this attraction is not well-known, or even very difficult to find, and you must do a good job before you go.
