Princes Street is only1.5 kilometers long, but it is known as the "best street in the world". This street divides Edinburgh into the old and new cities, the north into the new city, and the south into the old city. The east end of Princes Street connects Carlton Hill. The Carlton Hill, Edinburgh Castle and Scott Memorial Tower are the best places to overlook Princes Street. Princes Street is Edinburgh's bustling business district with large shopping malls and specialty shops and star hotels on the north side. On the south side are the Scott Monument, the large statues, Waverley train station and shopping malls, the Royal College of Scotland and Princes Street Gardens and Edinburgh Castle. The most prominent large statue on the south side of Princes Street is a war memorial statue - a horse riding costumed officer statue. From the two nameplates of the statue, it is to commemorate the servicemen of the Royal Scots Grey Cavalry Regiment (The Royal Scots Greys) who died in the Second Boer War (The Boer War), and the servicemen and civilians who died in the Second World War (1939-1945).
