The Old Bridge of Mostar was built by the Ottoman Empire in 1557 to replace the wooden bridge at that time, taking nine years to complete the length of twenty-eight metres and twenty metres high, and was the widest bridge in the world at that time. It was broken and then continuously repaired. A 1993 monument at the end of the bridge was placed in historic significance.
