My Wife and I found ourselves on a cold, wet Scottish night in the centre of Edinburgh prior to an evening at the Playhouse Theatre. We had booked a table at Mama Roma`s and we were welcolmed into the cosy bistro by friendly staff, who guided us to a table and relieved us of our wet coats. We chose from a very reasonably priced pre-theatre menu, and were soon enjoying our delicious Italian starters, mains and deserts, all washed down with a glass (or 2) of the excellent house wines. The Bistro was busy but the service was excellent, with a real buzz of conversation in the backround, a really pleasant comfortable experience with an authentic Italian "feel", but eventually, the clock beckoned, and we donned our coats, paid and left, but not before booking for later that week, when we would be able to enjoy a meal without concern for the clock!...We will be back!

I love a set menu and the £8.50 three-course lunch here really is the 'mamma' of them all. For this very reasonable sum you have a choice of 4 delicious starters, 7-8 mains including pizza, pasta, a fish dish and chicken, plus 2-3 desserts or coffee. If you're after maximum value, the incredibly welcoming staff are happy to bring you tap water and you've had a satisfying meal for £8.50 but I'm always tempted by a glass of the house wine. Service is absolutely top notch, the atmosphere is casual and relaxed (with plenty of regulars who know when they're onto a good thing) and the location is ideally situated at the top end of Leith Walk - handy for the shops or The Playhouse theatre but just a little away from the bustle of Princes Street. This is real, unpretentious Edinburgh.

We had the most amazing breakfast, GF bread is not available but was offered a gluten free pizza bread instead, which was just perfect for my scramble egg & smoked salmon! Great service with a smile & a very good value too! Thank you so much, we will certainly be back! :-)
