始建於南朝的千年古剎，至今已全部湮滅，而在昆山的台商為讓在昆山打拼的台灣人，能接續在台灣的媽祖信仰，集資重建此寺院。寺廟硬體建築聘請泉州的老師傅，以彰化鹿港龍山寺為原型，於昆山慧聚寺的原址，蓋起了華東地區唯一的閩式佛教建築，屋頂的剪黏工藝獨樹一幟，整座寺院雕樑畫棟繁複華麗。寺中前殿奉祀觀世音菩薩，後殿供奉由龍山寺分靈而來的媽祖聖像，每年三月的媽祖繞境活動，更成為昆山重要的宗教民俗活動，每每吸引眾多信徒參與此盛會。

建筑形式采用闽台古建风格，是华东地区首个“纯闽台风格”的古建筑群，集闽台文化和江南文化、妈祖文化、两岸民俗文化于一体。 慧聚广场内的慧聚天后宫也是华东地区规模最大的妈祖庙。
