靖港原名芦江，唐朝大将李靖曾在此驻军，因其治军有方，从不骚扰百姓，故后人将此地改名为靖港。靖港镇座落于湘江西岸，自古得水运优势，曾为三湘物资集散的繁荣商埠，美名“小汉口”。靖港镇曾为湖南四大米市之一，又是省内淮盐主要经销口岸之一，商贾云集，市场活跃，当时有民谣说:“船到靖江口，顺风都不走”，说明了靖港镇当时的繁华。靖港镇保留了不少清代建筑，有古驿站，古街，古作坊等，其中最起眼的还是被称为宏泰坊的古代青楼。据说，当年青楼的税收，曾经是靖港镇的第二大收入。青楼的修缮，曾经引起不小的争议，最后还是本着还原历史，尊重历史的态度，对青楼进行了较彻底地维修。古镇的布局為“八街四巷七碼頭”，大部分景点都在沿着河岸的一条老街上，老街东西向，由自西向东的“保粮正街”、“半边街”、“保健街”、“保安街”组成，全长1275米。靖港古镇的十个景点中，有八个在老街上，它们分别是：观音庙、铁器文化馆、原中共湖南省委旧址、宏泰坊、靖港皮影艺术馆、八元堂、江南民俗文物、锄禾源。
