In 1952, Huazhong Institute of Technology was established, focusing on the mechanical departments of Wuhan University, Hunan University, Guangxi University, Nanchang University and all the electrical parts of the motor department, the power part of the mechanical department of South China Institute of Technology and the power part of the motor department. In 1988, it was renamed Huazhong University of Technology. In 2000, the former Huazhong University of Technology, Tongji Medical University and Wuhan City Construction College merged to form Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
