South of the Victoria Market is Melbourne Flag Pole Garden (Flagstaff Gardens), which is on a hill where in the early years it was the colonists' cemetery, also known as Burial Hill. Because the Highlands used to be a bay that overlooked Melbourne, a flagpole was erected here in 1840 to facilitate sea and land contact, so the name was Flagstaff, and it was officially changed to a park in 1880. With the rise of buildings around the garden, it is impossible to see the bay anymore, and you can't feel you are standing on a high ground. The park is full of lawns, a wide variety of flowers and a variety of old trees.
