The ancient city of Phoenix is located in the southwest of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Hunan Province, with a total land area of about 10 square kilometers. At the end of 2010, about 50,000 people were composed of 28 ethnic groups such as Miao, Han and Tujia, which are typical ethnic minority areas. The ancient city of Phoenix was built in Jiajing, Ming Dynasty in 35 years (1556). It is 27 kilometers away from Tongren Phoenix Airport, 57 kilometers away from Huaihua Lijiang Airport and 280 kilometers away from Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport; G209 National Highway and S308 Provincial Highway run through the whole territory, and the Zhiliu Railway passes through. The ancient city of Phoenix is adjacent to the Dexu Miao Village in Jishou, the Mengdong River in Yongshun, and Fanjing Mountain in Guizhou. It is the only way between Huaihua, Jishou and Tongren, Guizhou. It is one of the ten cultural heritages of Hunan. It has been praised by New Zealand writer Louis Aili as the most beautiful small town in China. It is comparable to the ancient city of Lijiang in Yunnan and Pingyao in Shanxi. It enjoys the name of "Beipingyao and South Phoenix". It is a famous national historical and cultural city and a national AAAA-level scenic spot. In October 2019, it was selected for the first "Small Town Aesthetic Model" list.
