The Benaki Museum is a private museum founded by the Benaki family. Benaki Museum (Benaki Museum) is a comprehensive museum of cultural relics in Greece, mainly collecting cultural relics from countries and regions along the Mediterranean coast. Originally the Benaki family's mansion, it was converted into a museum in 1930, dedicated to the collection of the Benaki family, and has more than 120,000 artifacts from prehistoric times and more than 180,000 books. The founder of the Benaki Museum, Antonis Benakis (1873-1954), was born to a Greek family in Egypt. In 1910, his father and capitalist purchased the Harokopos mansion in Athens as his family residence. In 1926, Antonis Benakis left Egypt to settle in Athens. As an art collector, he devoted his life to collecting art from various countries. In 1930, he expanded the Benaki family's mansion to display his personal collection. In 1931, the Benaki Museum was officially established and donated by Benakis to the Greek government. Antonis Benakis died in 1954, and his heart was built into the wall at the entrance to the museum according to his will. To accommodate the growing collection, the museum has been expanded three times in 1965, 1968 and 1973. The museum completed its last large-scale expansion between 1989 and 2000, adding a new wing to the north, and reopened on June 7, 2000.
