Huangyao Ancient Town
Day trip to Huangyao Ancient Town~
I heard that you don't need to buy tickets after 6pm, so I arrived at 5pm and waited for an hour. The security guard was off duty.
I stayed at a guesthouse near the ancient town, which I was very satisfied with. I took photos of the sunset and the morning, and I spent a long time staring out the window in the morning. The receptionist was also very enthusiastic.
The ancient town is relatively small and basically commercialized, selling fermented black beans, pickled vegetables, and Poria cocos cakes. It's okay to come here to relax, but it's best to drive yourself. Otherwise, you'll have to rush back to Hezhou Station to take the high-speed rail, which is still a bit far away. I had fermented black bean horseshoe powder, which tasted good and had a smooth texture.
On the second morning, I bought a cappuccino for 35 yuan at a random coffee shop.
Away from crowd lead me to the ancient town.

Slow Time in Huangyao: A Poetic Retreat in an Ancient Town
By the time we drove to Huangyao Ancient Town, it was already afternoon. The sun cast dappled shadows on the bluestone road. Stepping into the ancient town felt like entering a world where time flows slowly. We followed the alleys to find our accommodation for the night - Yuanquan Inn. The name comes from the ancient well at the entrance, symbolizing the water source and welcoming those who are destined to be there.
The exterior of Yuanquan Inn continues the architectural style of the ancient town, with blue bricks and gray tiles. Red lanterns hang at the entrance, and a wooden plaque bears the name of the inn. As soon as we opened the door, it felt like entering a tranquil space from the bustling ancient town.
Our room was on the top floor, and upon entering, we were greeted by understated elegance. The wooden furniture emitted a faint fragrance, and the window offered a view of the rooftops of the alley houses and the distant green mountains. The room was fully equipped, with antique decorations perfectly blending with modern comfort.
What surprised us the most was the stargazing skylight design in the room. The skylight was located directly above the bed, allowing us to lie in bed at night and see the night sky through the clear glass.
In the evening, we strolled through the ancient town as tourists gradually dispersed, and the alleys became quiet. Moonlight spilled onto the bluestone road, and lanterns swayed gently. We couldn't help but quicken our pace to return to Yuanquan Inn.
Late at night, we returned to our room, opened the window, and felt the gentle breeze. The sound of flowing water and chirping insects came from afar. After turning off the lights, we could see the pure starry sky of the ancient town through the skylight, filled with twinkling stars. We quickly fell asleep and had a particularly restful night.
Yuanquan Inn is not just an inn; it feels like a part of Huangyao Ancient Town, with the unique warmth and charm of the town. Staying here, we felt like more than just tourists; we truly integrated into the town and experienced its leisurely and carefree atmosphere.
One of the ancient towns of Huangyao.
Many years ago, Huangyao Ancient Town was a dream of mine. I finally made it happen this time. Yesterday, I drove from Zhaoqing to Guangzhou, and then took a bullet train to Hezhou. I traveled across two provinces and three cities in one day, covering hundreds of miles, just to fulfill my dream of visiting Huangyao Ancient Town.
Traveling in the off-season is great. I saw many parking lots at many attractions these days. If it were the peak season, I would have to park far away and walk to the entrance of the scenic area. I arrived at Huangyao Ancient Town at 9:15 am. It was windy and a bit cold when I got off the car. I entered the scenic area and strolled slowly. I first saw an iron statue of a fish and dragon singing happily, and then started the tour according to the recommended route of the scenic area. The first attraction was the Watchtower, which had lookout holes and shooting holes. It was said that before the Republic of China, people were sent to guard the town and protect the peace of the ancient town. Further inside was the Mo Family Courtyard, which had been converted into an inn. I went in and saw a Xianshan Temple. I asked an employee what was inside, and the employee opened the door for me, but it was empty. It was probably a place where villagers came to worship on special days. I continued walking to Sima Di and Xingning Temple. There were breakfast stalls that had not been removed, and students who came here to sketch. I felt that the ancient town was just waking up, and the wonderful scenery of the ancient town was just beginning to unfold.

The gentleness of Huangyao Ancient Town in late autumn and early winter.
As the autumn breeze gently caressed me, I embarked on a journey to Huangyao Ancient Town, seeking a special kind of tranquility and relaxation at the beginning of winter.

Huangyao Ancient Town, Hezhou, Guangxi | One of China's Top 10 Ancient Towns
Huangyao Ancient Town is one of China's top 10 ancient towns, and the scenery is beautiful. Towering ancient trees, pavilions, small bridges, flowing water, and cobblestone roads... all the elements of an ancient town are here. My favorite part is the alleys that look unassuming, but when you turn into them, they always surprise you. Whether it's a flower wall, a mottled house, or a winding path, the eaves of the houses on both sides measure out a long and narrow sky. It's so long and narrow, and so blue. It's a perfect combination of ancient and natural. Wandering around, you'll find little surprises from time to time. If you have enough time, it's best to take your time during the day and stay here overnight to experience the simplicity and tranquility and appreciate another side of the town.
In short, you won't be disappointed by Huangyao Ancient Town!

Huangyao Ancient Town, filled with vicissitudes of life.
Huangyao Ancient Town, filled with vicissitudes of life.
On the second floor of a building not far from the "Fairy Well" in Huangyao Ancient Town, an old lady with white hair was standing by the window, looking at the tourists playing with water downstairs with her eyes that had seen most of her life. I waved to her, and she didn't respond at first. After she saw clearly that I was greeting her, she smiled, turned around slowly and left. Her eyes full of vicissitudes of life made me unforgettable for a long time. In the evening, the twilight fell, and the smoke was curling up. Standing on the balcony of the hotel and overlooking the whole ancient town, I seemed to see the history of the ancient town for nearly a thousand years, all condensed in the octopus banyan, Dailong Bridge, bluestone slab, ancient Yao River, and ancient temples. If the ancient town is a piece of paper, I see that it is filled with vicissitudes of life.

Huangyao Ancient Town: An ancient town with almost no original residents, suitable for leisure, vacation, and travel photography. The highlights of the ancient town include stone-paved roads, small alleys, boats in the river, and dragon claw banyan trees; it takes just over an hour to tour the whole town, and various kinds of fermented black beans are a local specialty. Accommodation: Shengzhi Mansion Hotel (such a grand name), the location and environment are both good, and the food prepared by the hotel is also delicious. Staying on the top floor offers a panoramic view of the ancient town.
Zhaoxing Dong Village: Despite its strong commercial atmosphere, I personally still like it. A relatively primitive Dong village, the commercial model promotes better development of the Dong village. The five drum towers and wind-rain bridges are the biggest features and are very spectacular; the environmental protection vehicle directly reaches the entrance of the scenic spot. The night view of the Dong village from a distance is also very good👍. Accommodation: Jindang Palace Garden Hotel, a pure wooden structure at the entrance of the scenic spot, with a very good environment.
Libo Xiaoqikong: The emerald of the earth, not exaggerated at all. We walked for about five hours in total, with some drifting and two transfers. From the east gate, take the sightseeing bus directly to Wolong Pond and start going downstream: Wolong Pond - Mandarin Duck Lake - Cui Valley Waterfall - Water Forest - Laya Waterfall - Xiaoqikong Bridge. The child liked the Water Forest the most. The whole journey is unforgettable.
Accommodation: Green Field Inn (near the east gate of Xiaoqikong, within walking distance to the scenic gate) is not bad, but the food nearby is average. There is a very delicious Zunyi mutton noodle shop in Libo County, highly recommended.
Sky Eye Science Base (Pingtang): Recommended for those who want to cultivate children's curiosity about science, otherwise not recommended. There are many people, long queues, and multiple transfers. Along the way, there is a Sky Bridge service area and scenic spot, which is free and worth seeing, very spectacular.
Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village: Qianhu is really successful, very popular, just to experience it. Especially the song and dance at the central square, it is absolutely wonderful! The Miao Folk Museum in Qianhu is a must-see to understand the complete Miao culture. We prefer another Miao village - Langde Upper Village, quiet, primitive, and simple. A small stream runs through the village, and the children had a great time playing in the river.
Accommodation: A homestay in Langde Upper Village. The food in the village is authentic farmhouse cuisine.

Hezhou Travel/Experience Guangxi's Hidden Gem Destinations
Hezhou, with its beautiful mountains and rivers and unique charm of ancient towns, is worth spending a few days to explore. Follow my guide and let's get started!
DAY1️⃣: Gupo Mountain--Huangyao Ancient Town
You can take a bus from Hezhou city to the scenic area, but we drove ourselves for more freedom~
Here's a brief outline of our route:
Xiangu Waterfall➡️Xiangu Grassland➡️Lovers' Forest➡️Fangjia Tea Garden➡️Xiangu Village➡️Guyaochong➡️Scenic Area Entrance
This route mainly covers 6️⃣ sightseeing spots by shuttle bus, making it easy and convenient to check off almost all the attractions. The entire tour takes about 4 hours. If you have time and want to reach the summit, you can continue hiking up from the fork after Xiangu Waterfall until you reach the top of Gupo Mountain, then descend and continue exploring, which takes about 6-8 hours in total.
The water at Xiangu Waterfall is not strong, so you don't have to worry about getting your clothes wet when taking photos. Some maple leaves on the mountain have already started to turn red, making for great photos. We bought some Jiupuxiang wine, which tasted pretty good~ There are many monkeys 🐒 at Guyaochong Station, with hundreds of them at Jiupin Monkey Mountain. Be careful not to provoke them, and keep your food well-hidden.
After finishing the tour of Gupo Mountain, we went to Huangyao Ancient Town in the afternoon. Since we had a meal by the roadside, it was already evening when we arrived at the ancient town! You can enter without a ticket 🎫 haha~ We booked a homestay in the ancient city, a wooden structure decorated in an antique style, and the environment was very clean~
DAY2️⃣: Huangyao Ancient Town--Xixi Hot Spring♨️
The ancient town is not big, and one day is more than enough to explore. Must-visit spots: Dailong Bridge, Xiangu Well, Guo Family Mansion, Dragon Claw Banyan, Yikongzhigu (Gatehouse), Sima Residence, Ancient Opera Stage (outside the scenic area). There are boat rides in the ancient town, 20 yuan/person for half an hour. If you have enough time, you can take a ride to appreciate the beauty of the ancient town from a different perspective.
For food, I recommend trying the local specialty Niuchangsu, which is sour and spicy 🌶 and very appetizing, along with a bowl of beef blood, which is very tasty. The local homemade papaya shreds are great with rice! I bought a jar to take back as a souvenir.
DAY3️⃣: Xixi Hot Spring♨️
Soaking in a hot spring in autumn and winter is simply too enjoyable! Even more enjoyable is the internet-famous infinity hot spring pool! The water temperature is around 25-30 degrees, with a view of the mountains and a wide, comfortable vista, making for great photos! Of course, there are many other hot spring pools to try out~

🌟【TOP 5 Check-in Points】

✅ Laiqun Restaurant: The dishes 🥗 are good, and the restaurant is located on the main road of the ancient town. The menu is handwritten by the owner ✍️, which is very special and can be considered a special edition of Huangyao postcards 📨.

✅ Guo Family Courtyard: A courtyard-style 🏡 building from the Qing Dynasty, well-preserved, with a strong sense of history. The story of the bricks in the archway is very interesting to learn about.

Nanshan Tea Sea in Zhaoping County
On the way to Nanshan Tea Sea, I had an urgent need on the national highway and searched for a gas station all the way but couldn't find one.
Regardless, I stopped at a farmhouse for help and received a warm reception. After the matter was resolved, they even made tea for us and invited us to rest. So we sat down and chatted, and learned that the tea was grown and processed by themselves. It was fresh, sweet, and delicious!
Before leaving, they even invited us for lunch. We were so touched and warmed! Thank you and bless you with all the best!
Nanshan Tea Sea is located in Zhaoping County, Hezhou City, Guangxi. The ticket price is 68 yuan per person, and the parking fee is 10 yuan. You can park outside the scenic area or drive into the scenic area without additional car fees.
The glass walkway inside the scenic area requires an additional fee of 60 yuan per person.
There are no dining facilities in the scenic area. If you need to eat, you can find a farmhouse at the foot of the mountain or go to the county town, which is not far away. Half a day is enough to visit here.

Strolling through Huangyao
Huangyao Ancient Town is conveniently located not far from the highway.
It feels like most ancient towns in China suffer from severe homogenization; even those with their own unique features gradually lose their distinctiveness and become buried for commercial interests. Huangyao is no exception.
Entrance to Huangyao Ancient Town scenic area requires a ticket, priced at 88 yuan per person. If you stay at a guesthouse within the scenic area, you can get a discounted ticket through the establishment for 60 yuan per person.
It seems that there are only guesthouses within the scenic area; at least, we couldn't find any chain hotels.
The streets and alleys of the ancient town are lined with specialty shops, travel photography studios, and some eateries and bars.
