Yingxian Wooden Pagoda | The eternal guardian of Jin City.
Embark on a journey to explore ancient architecture in northern Shanxi, where you will be amazed and awed at every turn. The solemn and compassionate Yungang Buddha, the eternal guardian of Jin City, the Hanging Temple, the Huayan Temple with its Liao and Jin architecture and Ming sculptures, the graceful Hezhang Luchi Bodhisattva, and the ugly dolls of the Northern Wei tombs have stood silently for thousands of years, speaking loudly of the long history and glory of this land.
Northern Wei Pingcheng, a thousand miles of clouds.
Yungang's ten thousand caves, all reveal the true face of Buddha.
Huayan Temple, golden light and Zen bells.
The walls of the Daiwang Mansion, with nine dragons coiled.
The majestic Northern Hengshan, with its spectacular Hanging Temple.
The thousand-year-old wooden pagoda, the eternal guardian of Jin City.
Twin cities, the legacy of Geng Gong.
Ancient capital of China, Datong.
Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, Xuankong Temple in Hunyuan.
Shanxi Trip: Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, Xuankong Temple || The weather was nice and cool. The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is a true wonder, but it has been leaning for decades. This is because a leader in the 1980s decided to replace the wooden walls on each floor with wooden lattice windows, which caused the pagoda to lean due to different wind pressures. I also thought of some recent renovations that have turned beauty into ugliness and destroyed the real to create the fake. I hope the leaders who don't know what they're doing will leave our few remaining historical treasures alone. When I arrived at Xuankong Temple, the sky was full of auspicious clouds. I climbed the steps along the cliff and couldn't help but admire the wisdom and perseverance of the ancients.
Yingxian Wooden Pagoda: A Thousand-Year-Old Charm and Wisdom
In this era of information explosion, we are grateful for games like Black Myth: Wukong, which bring ancient legends and relics back to life, leading us to explore those corners forgotten by time. This time, my steps were drawn to a wooden pagoda, the Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple in Yingxian County, Shuozhou City, Shanxi Province, known as the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda.
My first encounter with the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda was in the works of Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin. Their descriptions of architectural art were like ancient spells, awakening my infinite longing for the beauty of architecture. Now, I finally have the opportunity to witness this treasure of Liao Dynasty architecture and experience its thousand-year-old charm.
Entering the scenic area, the wooden pagoda stands tall, like a silent elder, telling the vicissitudes of history. The entire pagoda is built without a single nail, relying solely on mortise and tenon joints, a testament to the wisdom and craftsmanship of its builders. Along with the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Eiffel Tower, the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is one of the world's three great towers. It not only attracts global attention with its unique architectural form but also symbolizes the wisdom of the Chinese nation with its profound cultural heritage.
The scenic area is not large, but every corner is full of charm. The statue of Guanyin beside the wooden pagoda is dignified and kind, as if it can cleanse the dust from people's hearts. Xiaoxitian is an excellent spot for photographing the wooden pagoda, blending the ancient tower with the blue sky and white clouds into a beautiful picture. The three colors of the creative ice cream each have their own merits. My daughter chose chocolate, while I preferred the yellow, like autumn sunshine, warm and bright.
While touring, I couldn't help but wonder why the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda has stood for a thousand years. Perhaps it is the reverence and adaptation to nature, and the ultimate pursuit of architectural art, that created this miracle. In today's fast-paced society, should we also learn to slow down and appreciate the beauty carved by time?
Additionally, I would like to remind all visitors that the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is not just a building but a cultural carrier. Please maintain basic respect and reverence during your visit, avoid making noise, and do not damage any items in the scenic area. Let this ancient cultural heritage be passed on intact to future generations.
The trip to the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda was not only a visual feast but also a spiritual cleansing. It made me deeply feel the wisdom and strength of the Chinese nation and cherish all the beauty before me even more. May this thousand-year-old pagoda continue to stand tall, becoming an eternal beacon in our hearts.
[Yingxian Wooden Pagoda].
⌚️The third stop of Journey to the West is Yingxian. During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, it was one of the 16 prefectures of Yanyun. The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, also known as the Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple, is the tallest and oldest existing wooden pagoda in the world. It is a 💯 pure wooden pagoda from the Liao Dynasty, with a history of 968 years. It is as famous as the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and is known as one of the "Three Wonders of the World".
The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is a manifestation of China's most exquisite mortise and tenon structure, demonstrating the 72 mortise and tenon techniques of Lu Ban. It has withstood storms 💨, rain ⛈️, lightning ⚡️, fire 🔥, earthquakes, and even the baptism of war, and still stands tall today, which is a miracle in the history of ancient architecture.
The wooden pagoda is more like a guardian of time, hidden in the hustle and bustle of the world, experiencing the vicissitudes of life. A breeze blew, and the wind chimes 🎐 on the wooden pagoda made a jingling sound, as if telling a thousand-year-old story... Time seemed to be shielded at this moment. When the bell rang, the swallows around the wooden pagoda flew up and hovered 🌀 over the wooden pagoda, like devout believers waiting to meet the Buddha, to meet all the beauty in the world, and to meet the happiness they expected. There is a saying:
A hundred feet of lotus blooms in the morning sun, and the five bright and four dark hide the mystery
The faint Buddha chant of the Sakyamuni Pagoda, lost in the world and transformed into a mortal
Yingxian Wooden Pagoda
Liang Sicheng cured my spiritual exhaustion after seeing the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda.
"I really don't feel at ease when I leave, I'm afraid that once I leave, I will never see it again."
In April, after returning from the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, I fell into a deep sense of powerlessness and regret.
Mr. Liang Sicheng's words are exactly what I feel.
I went to Shuozhou again last week and met the wooden pagoda on a sunny day, but I always feel that no matter how many times I see it, it is just a long farewell.
We already know a lot about the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda:
She is 967 years old this year
67.31 meters high, the tallest existing wooden structure building
7430 tons
There are 5 Ming layers and 4 dark layers
A total of 54 kinds of brackets (one said more than 70 kinds) are used, known as the "Bracket Museum"
...
But these data are not enough to describe her.
The Eiffel Tower is really beautiful. Every time I see her by accident at the corner of Paris, I will sigh that it is really beautiful.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is really wonderful. At the beginning, I took a lot of interesting tourist photos on the lawn in the distance.
Although they are collectively referred to as the three major towers in the world, the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is different from them.
When I crossed the mountain gate and saw her with my own eyes, the dust of time came oncoming. A wooden pagoda with life makes the meaning of "history" in my mind concrete.
In the torrent of time, countless wooden pagodas like her have long disappeared like smoke, such as Yongning Temple Pagoda, which has become a sentence in "Luoyang Jialan Ji".
But she still stood there quietly, with a no longer upright body. Nearly a thousand years of time solidified in her every pillar and every bracket. Under the tower, I was shocked by a huge force, with emotion, respect, regret, and a trace of confusion. The plaque of "Eternal Golden City" almost made my tears burst into tears. Looking up at the severely skewed second floor again, this contrast is almost cruel.
"I saw a pearl and jade tower, and I saw the wild grass, and then I saw the clouds and smoke."
But the wooden pagoda is still there, as if those natural and man-made disasters have nothing to do with her. She was just silent, watching the sunrise and sunset in more than 900 years. We witnessed her collapse and slipped towards an irreversible end.
Until I recently read a paragraph from Mr. Liang Sicheng in the book, I began to feel a little relieved:
"The characteristics of Chinese architecture are also the manifestation of national characteristics. Chinese architecture uses wood, which is derived from the Chinese character, does not seek the long-term existence of the original material, obeys the law of natural life and death, regards architecture as clothing, horses, and is at ease with the alternation of rise and fall and the principle of metabolism. "
Birth, old age, sickness and death, existence, abode, destruction, and emptiness.
The noisy swallows around the tower reminded me of the sparrows in the "Cosmic Exploration Editorial Department". Perhaps, the space-time channel has been opened long ago, and we are lucky enough to meet such a miracle in space and time.
One of the three wonders of the world | Life advice: See it before it's gone.
| Life advice: See it before it's gone.🎈In Yingxian County, Shuozhou, Shanxi, there is an amazing ancient building, the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, also known as the Buddha Palace Temple Sakyamuni Pagoda.😉
🌟The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda was built in the second year of Liao Qingning (1056).
There is a legendary story about its construction. It is said to have been initiated by Empress Xiao of Emperor Xingzong of Liao. The "Chronicles of the Khitan Kingdom" records that "Empress Xiao of Emperor Xingzong, a native of Yingzhou," and the Xiao family was honored, and three empresses were produced, which was extremely glorious.
On the door lintel wall panels in the north and south of the first floor of the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, there are six donor figures, three men and three women. Some historians assert that this was the family temple during the prosperous period of the Xiao family.
In the second year of Liao Qingning, Emperor Daozong of Liao gave his mother Xiao Tali the honorary title of Empress Dowager. For Emperor Daozong of Liao, who was obedient to his mother, it was reasonable to build a Buddha pagoda to enshrine the Buddha's relics in his mother's hometown.
💫Many magical stories have happened in the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda.
During the Kangxi period, during a renovation, a carpenter accidentally dropped an axe. And there happened to be two children playing on the ground, and the axe fell between the children.
People say this is a blessing from the gods. From the construction of the pagoda to the present, there has not been a single casualty here.
🕊️ In 1926, Feng Yuxiang's army wanted to expand to Shanxi, and Yan Xishan's army fought with it in Yingxian. The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda was attacked by more than 200 artillery fires.
One of the shells drilled into the four-story railing, luckily it did not explode, it has not been taken out yet, and it caused a slight tilt on the third floor.
💥In 1948, when Yingxian was liberated, the defending Kuomintang army used the wooden pagoda as a commanding height and set up a machine gun position. The wooden pagoda was hit by 12 shells, each shell passed through the pagoda, but there was no explosion in the pagoda.
👀In September 1933, the famous architect Liang Sicheng traveled a long distance and rushed here overnight. The first time he saw the wooden pagoda, he exclaimed that it was so good that it was amazing.
Afterwards, he and his disciple Mo Zongjiang spent two weeks drawing the drawings of the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda.
👏Yingxian once held a meeting of 10,000 people in the wooden pagoda.
It can be seen that its structure is strong.
💖The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda has experienced thousands of years of wind and rain and witnessed countless historical changes.
The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is also the location of "Black Myth: Wukong", you must come and see it
It's the world's tallest and oldest mortise and tenon wooden pagoda.
Yingxian Wooden Pagoda Tour
In the morning, the sun shone through the clouds and onto the earth. I was excited to start my journey to the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda.
After a while, I finally arrived at the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda Scenic Area. As soon as I got off the bus, I saw a towering wooden pagoda. The sight was breathtaking.
The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, also known as the Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple, was built in 1056 and is the world's tallest and oldest wooden pagoda. It was built entirely of wood, without a single nail. The mortise and tenon structure and the bracket sets are connected to each other, achieving a wonderful balance between rigidity and flexibility, creating this unique architectural wonder.
Entering the scenic area, I could see the pagoda up close and feel its majesty and solemnity. Looking up at the pagoda, I couldn't help but admire the superb craftsmanship of the ancient craftsmen. Each floor of the pagoda has exquisite Buddha statues and murals. Although only one floor is open to the public, it is enough to make people feel its solemnity. The Buddha statue on the first floor is 11 meters high and very spectacular. The small figures supporting it below are lifelike, and there is even a proud little dragon, which adds a bit of fun.
There are many birds flying around the pagoda, as if they are also the guardians of the wooden pagoda. Over the centuries, this wooden pagoda has witnessed countless historical changes, dynastic changes, and the passage of time, but it has always remained silent.
I stood under the wooden pagoda for a long time, imagining the devout believers praying here, the monks practicing here, and the scholars studying here in the past. Now, I am fortunate to stand here and admire its style.
Although the pagoda is severely tilted, it still stands proudly, embodying the unyielding character of the Chinese people. It is like an old man who has experienced vicissitudes of life, silently telling stories of the past.
Time passed unknowingly. I left the scenic area with deep respect and reluctance for this wooden pagoda. The memory of the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda will always remain in my heart.
The mysterious ancient pagoda in Ying County once made his heart beat faster and attracted many visitors.
Ying County Wooden Pagoda After leaving the ancient city of Daizhou, Shanxi, we continued to head north. After driving for more than an hour, we arrived in Ying County, Shuozhou City, Shanxi, to visit the world-famous Ying County Wooden Pagoda. On the holiday, the streets of Ying County were full of self-driving cars from all over the country. The scenic area parking lot and nearby roads were full, and the scenic area was crowded with people.
The Ying County Wooden Pagoda is an ancient pagoda with a history of nearly a thousand years. The pagoda is 67.31 meters high and the bottom diameter is 30.27 meters. It has six eaves and five floors, and there is a dark floor between every two floors, actually nine floors. This ancient pagoda has been standing for nearly a thousand years, and it has not been burned by lightning, collapsed by strong earthquakes, or destroyed by war. It is a world miracle.
In the early 1930s, when Mr. Liang Sicheng, a famous ancient architect, first investigated the Ying County Wooden Pagoda, this mysterious ancient pagoda made his heart beat faster. Later, this ancient pagoda gradually entered people's sight and became the tallest and oldest existing tower-style wooden building in the world.
The wooden pagoda under the setting sun is particularly majestic and solemn. Tourists either visit the tower or walk around the tower to appreciate its posture from multiple angles and explore its inner mystery. In the early 1970s, when the wooden pagoda was repaired, people found Buddhist relics: seven treasures and eight treasures, among which the Buddha's tooth relics shocked the archaeological world.
Walking around the tower, different plaques leave different eras and character information. The three-story "Sakyamuni Pagoda" in the south is from the Jin Dynasty and is the oldest plaque. The five-story "Junji Shengong" was written by Zhu Di, the Ming Chengzu. The four-story "World Wonder" was written by Zhu Houzhao, the Ming Wuzong. The north end "Yongzhen Jincheng" and the south end "Wangu Guanzhan" are Qing Dynasty plaques. The Guanyin Temple and Dizang Temple in the north of the wooden pagoda are all Qing Dynasty buildings.
A wooden pagoda, I don't know how many mysteries it contains, and it also attracts modern people to come here to appreciate the remaining cultural relics and explore the historical stories derived from it.
"Yingxian Wooden Pagoda: A Thousand-Year-Old Charm, A Wooden Legend"
🌟On the vast land of Shanxi, there stands an awe-inspiring treasure of the Liao Dynasty - Yingxian Wooden Pagoda. This architectural miracle of pure wooden mortise and tenon structure has been standing proudly after a thousand years of wind and rain, becoming an outstanding representative of ancient architecture in Shanxi.
🏰✨Standing in front of the five-story wooden pagoda, people can't help but sigh at their insignificance. The majestic momentum of the wooden pagoda is enough to touch the hearts of every visitor. Its beauty is not only reflected in the delicate carvings on the exterior, but also in the soul of the ancient architecture of Shanxi interpreted by the interior architecture.
🔎✨Many tourists hurriedly walked into the tower, perhaps pushed by the crowd, or because the light in the tower was dim, they often just glanced at the murals next to them and left in a hurry with the crowd. However, if you stay a little longer in front of the Buddha statue and look up, you will find the extraordinary charm of this wooden pagoda.
💎✨On the top of the Buddha statue on the first floor of the wooden pagoda, in the center of the ceiling, there is an exquisite wooden structure protruding upwards, which is the "caisson" in architecture. As the dazzling pearl of ancient Chinese architecture, the caisson is not only decorative, but also reflects the excellent spatial art.
🏛✨The caisson extends layer by layer, and each layer is decorated with exquisite brackets. These brackets support the beams and jointly support the arch. Although the design of the caisson in the wooden pagoda is relatively simple, when you stand under the magnificent Buddha statue and look up, the shocking beauty will surely be engraved in your heart.
🌈✨The function of the caisson is far more than decoration, it can also cleverly expand the sense of space. The upwardly convex shape brings a more spacious space to the first floor, which is why the most beautiful scenery in many ancient buildings often comes from the moment of looking up. The ingenious use of space and the ingenuity of the ancients show their extraordinary wisdom and aesthetic taste.
👁✨So, dear friends, when visiting ancient buildings, don't forget to look up at the ceiling more often! Maybe you will encounter the exquisite caisson, which is an architectural miracle like a reversed world presented to us by the wisdom and ingenuity of the ancients!
📅✨Opening hours: Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is open all year round, from 08:30 to 17:30 every day. Please note that the last admission time is 17:00. I hope you can fully appreciate the unique charm of this ancient building during your visit!✨📅

Shanxi is known for its ancient architecture, and Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is a must-see
If you visit Shanxi to see ancient buildings but miss the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, it's like going to a museum without seeing its most treasured exhibit.
🌟【Yingxian Wooden Pagoda】
This wooden pagoda, which was built during the Liao Dynasty, is the tallest and oldest existing wooden structure in the world. It is not only a symbol of Shanxi but also the foremost representation of ancient Chinese architecture and mortise and tenon craftsmanship.
Despite the ravages of a thousand years, you can see from afar that there is already noticeable deformation around the third to fourth floors. One can't help but worry about how many more years it can stand.
Honestly, the experience of visiting the wooden pagoda now is not very strong.
Firstly, you can no longer climb the pagoda. In the past, you could go up to the third floor and take pictures of the exquisite interior sculptures. Now, to protect the pagoda, you can only pass through the first floor and admire the main Buddha statue there.
Secondly, there are just too many people. No matter which angle you choose, there are always people in the shot, so I had to take a photo on the abandoned grassland outside the courtyard to get a picture without others in it.
Many friends say it's not worth visiting, but this is actually determined by the nature of tourism in Shanxi. To appreciate these architectural relics, visitors need to do their homework, understand the background, and know what to look for and what makes it special. Ancient buildings and temples cannot be turned into highly interactive projects, so naturally, they lack entertainment value.
🌟【Best Spot to Photograph the Wooden Pagoda】
If you visit the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, I recommend exiting through the east gate. There is a perfect spot here to take pictures of people with the pagoda. Walk south after exiting the east gate, and you'll find a demolished area with long grass. You can use the grass as the foreground to cover the ground and the pagoda's wall.
🌟【Jingtu Temple】
I highly recommend visiting Jingtu Temple in the northeast corner. Liang Sicheng once mentioned the "Three Treasures of Yingxian"—the "national treasure" Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, the "unparalleled" caisson ceiling of Jingtu Temple, and the scattered stone lions. The latter two are found here.
Jingtu Temple has a prestigious history. It was originally built during the Later Tang of the Five Dynasties as the family temple of Emperor Li Siyuan of the Later Tang, so it carries royal blood and grandeur.
However, the original temple was destroyed and later rebuilt on the same site in the 24th year of the Jin Dading era (1184). According to the temple's introduction, it was originally a five-courtyard complex, but during the Ming Dynasty, the city was reduced, leaving only three courtyards inside the city, while the outer ones were abandoned. The three inner courtyards were also later damaged by humans, leaving only the current main hall from the Jin Dynasty.
Its most treasured feature is the caisson ceiling inside the main hall. Looking up inside the hall, you can see nine large caisson ceilings, each surrounded by imagined heavenly palaces. Each small heavenly palace, from the flying eaves and dougong brackets to the railings and beast figures, is extremely detailed. Inside the caisson ceilings, there are also double golden dragons flying, showcasing the unparalleled spatial imagination of the craftsmen.
When I was a child, I watched the animated film "Havoc in Heaven," and the depiction of the heavenly palace in the film was likely inspired by this.
The scattered stone lions mentioned by Liang Sicheng are now severely damaged and unrecognizable, standing in the courtyard, leaving us to imagine their original appearance through photos.
The rear wall of Jingtu Temple is closely attached to a section of the remaining earthen wall, which should be the Ming Dynasty city wall ruins, confirming the story of the temple's destruction due to the city's reduction during the Ming Dynasty.
Life advice: The Wooden Pagoda in Yingxian County, Shanxi, is a must-see…
Leaving Shanxi, the thing I will never forget is probably this Wooden Pagoda 👉🏻
No wonder Mr. Liang Sicheng couldn't stop worrying about this thousand-year-old pagoda 👏👏
It is now visibly leaning 😭😭 If you can, go and see it as soon as possible…

🎀Dear friends, today I must share with you the Pure Land Temple in Ying County, Shanxi.
🌟After seeing the Wooden Pagoda in Ying County, I dragged my slightly tired body into the Pure Land Temple. As soon as I stepped into the temple gate, it felt like entering a peaceful world. This place was founded in the second year of the Tianhui era of the Jin Dynasty (1124 AD) and rebuilt in the twenty-fourth year of the Dading era (1184 AD), with a long history.😃
💫There are many legendary stories in the temple. Mr. Liang Sicheng praised the three treasures of Ying County, two of which are the Nine-Eyed Caisson and the disheveled stone lions of the Pure Land Temple. The pair of stone lions are relics from the Liao Dynasty, with unique shapes. Although damaged, their former beauty can still be seen. The Nine-Eyed Caisson in the hall is even more astonishing, with tens of thousands of small wooden strips and blocks forming heavenly pavilions, paired with the exquisite caisson, it feels like a fairyland.😍
🎈The golden September and silver October are the best times for worship. Visiting the Pure Land Temple during this period, you can feel the solemnity and tranquility. The Mahavira Hall is majestic and solemn, with a single-eaved hip roof, a gentle slope, and sparse dougong. The Buddha statues inside the hall are solemn, and the murals are exquisite, making people feel awe. Worshiping here, praying for peace and smoothness in life, the heart also becomes extraordinarily peaceful.🙏
💖Moreover, this place is actually the filming location for the Black Wukong myth! With the game's popularity, this originally low-key temple has become known to more people. The game's filming showcases the beauty of the ancient architecture of the Pure Land Temple in the virtual world, attracting many game enthusiasts to check in and experience the wonderful charm of the intersection of reality and virtuality.😎
🎊Dear friends, come to the Pure Land Temple in Ying County and experience its history and beauty in person. It will definitely not disappoint you.💗
