2024 Wuhai Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
Wuhai was formed from the combination of the original Wuda and Haibowan cities. Located in the southwest of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Wuhai is the third city to be administered directly under the autonomous region. Mountains surround the area, interspersed with the Gobi Desert, other desert land, and grassland, creating a unique landscape. In addition to the sights of the Yellow River and the desert, Wuhai also has many historical and cultural attractions, such as the remains of Han era (206 BCE - 220 CE) villages and the scenic Manbala Temple.

Don't miss the trip to Wuhai! Keep this guide and start your exploration journey to experience the unique charm of Wuhai!
Don't stay at home on weekends, travel to the desert and see the sea.
๐Wuhai
A magical city
See the sea in the desert ๐๏ธ, see the edge of the city
The desert is a flowerless wasteland
Deserts and lakes ๐๏ธ are both desolate and romantic
Arrive at around 2 pm, check in to the hotel
Head straight to Wuhai Lake
I paid CNY 98 per person
To take an off-road vehicle directly to the popular dead tree
You have plenty of time to take photos ๐ธ
When you're done, call the driver
To take you to the popular road ๐ฃ๏ธ
The whole process is very convenient
You can also experience the thrill of off-road desert driving
There are different packages to choose from
Prices are very transparent~
If you just want to take photos of the desert ๐๏ธ, you can go to the desert by the roadside
If you have enough time and energy, you can choose to hike
Avoid the crowds and go to a lesser-known destination.
To find tranquility, I prefer the hidden gems, such as Alxa League in Inner Mongolia, which is only a 1.5-hour drive from Yinchuan Airport, and is my destination for this trip.
๐ฉโ๐ผWhy did I choose Wuhai?
๐คThe answer comes from a movie๐ฅ.
The scene is vast, distant, lonely, and ethereal, with golden sand, blue lakes, and lonely trees, which instantly touched the softest part of my heart.
So, for my trip to the northwest, I chose Wuhai as my first stop.
๐[Travel Plan]
D1: Depart from Hangzhou, transfer in Yinchuan, arrive in Wuhai, and visit Huaiyuan Night Market at night.
D2: Depart from Wuhai, visit Lamasery, and then go to Zhongwei.
๐คWhat to do?
๐นA must-visit is the "Wuhai Lake" scenic area, where mountains and water are intertwined, and the city and water are integrated, making Wuhai worthy of the reputation of the Pearl of the Yellow River.
๐Location: "Wuhai Lake No. 1 Pier Scenic Area", ticket price is CNY 98, including round-trip ferry tickets.
๐Tips: Want to take a photo of the internet-famous tree? You must take a boat to get there. The last boat is at 16:30. After getting off the boat, you can walk for half an hour or take an off-road vehicle to the shooting point. Remember to pay attention to the return time!
๐นVisit Manba Lamasery, a Tibetan Buddhist temple built during the Qianlong period, which locals affectionately call "Little Lhasa".
๐Navigation: "Lamasery", there is a parking lot at the entrance, and admission is free.
๐Tips: The temple is located halfway up the mountain and requires a walk up the mountain, which is very photogenic! Note that the temple is closed at noon and opens after 14:30. If you want to rent clothes for photos, you need to rent them in advance in Wuhai City, as there are no rental services around the temple.
๐ฝ๏ธWhat to eat?
๐ธRecommended: "Old Ama Mongolian Restaurant", "Sanping Stew Restaurant", "Longheng Braised Noodles", "Maji Lamb Restaurant", and "Huaiyuan Night Market" beef patties, Nurmai spicy strips, rolled cold noodles, Wuji milk rice wine, although I still can't accept the spicy paste.
๐What to wear?
๐ธHigh SPF is key! Compared to sunscreen and sun-protective clothing, I prefer lightweight sun-protective gear. The sun-protective clothing I bought with my best friend is cool and breathable, and comfortable even when walking in the desert.
๐ธThe wind is strong in the desert, so it is best to choose hats and sunglasses with straps, and boots or slippers are the best choice for shoes.
This trip not only allowed me to appreciate the magnificent scenery of Wuhai but also made me deeply appreciate the charm of niche tourism. On the journey, we should not only enjoy the scenery but also learn to respect and protect the land, making every trip a beautiful memory.

Walking into the temple, the tranquil and mysterious atmosphere makes you feel like you're traveling through time and chatting with ancient civilizations. Wuhai | Visit the desert to see the sea.
Wuhai is surrounded by the Kubuqi, Ulan Buh, and Mu Us deserts, and is also connected to the Yellow River, making it a true desert oasis. Half desert and half sea, this is the biggest feature of Wuhai. Overall, it's very beautiful and photogenic, and I have a good impression of the city of Wuhai.
1. Take a boat to Wuhai Lake and navigate directly to "Pier 1". There are two ways to visit on weekdays: one is to take a yacht/sailboat for sightseeing, without getting off the boat, which takes about 35-40 minutes; the other is to take a speedboat to and from the desert camp, and you can get off the boat halfway to play. The latter is generally recommended, and you can buy tickets through ๐. (I don't know if it has been updated recently)
2. There are also methods on the Internet to go to Wuhai Lake by land, but I haven't tried it, so I won't give any tips.
3. When you arrive at the desert pier, go to the left along the lake to go to the popular tree (cement pier haha)
โ ๏ธIt's not very convenient to get out of Pier 1 at night, and it takes a long time to get a taxi.
Discover Wuhai, starting with Wuhai grapes.

Appreciation of the Collections in Wuhai Museum
The mighty Yellow River flows northward, and the first stop upon entering Inner Mongolia is Wuhai City. Wuhai City is a young city, a city that has prospered because of coal, and is known as the "Sea of Black Gold." The Yellow River Haibowan Water Conservancy Project is located in Wuhai City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, along the main stream of the Yellow River. The left bank of the project is the Ulan Buh Desert, and the right bank is Wuhai City, a new industrial city in Inner Mongolia. This hub consists of an earth-rock dam, downstream energy dissipation facilities, a power station, and a sand discharge tunnel switch station.
Wuhai Museum is located within the Wuhai Science and Technology Museum. Although it is not large in area and has few collections, the introductions to the collections are detailed. Here are a few recommended collections from the museum.
Hu People Playing with Lion Brick Carving
The Hu People Playing with Lion Brick Carving is a rectangular brick, finely textured and hard. The carver used high relief techniques, with exquisite craftsmanship and vivid shapes, making it a building decorative component.
Upon close inspection, the brick carving shows a window on the brick surface, with one person and one lion carved inside, surrounded by decorative clouds and flowers. The Hu person wears a conical felt hat, has thick eyebrows, deep-set eyes, high cheekbones, a broad mouth, and a beard. He wears a short-sleeved long shirt with a belt at the waist, raises his left hand, holds a ball in his right hand, and swings it forward. He wears long pants and short boots, stands with his left leg slightly bent and his right leg raised high, kicking forward to the left, dancing and playing with the lion. The lion has round eyes, an open mouth, a long tongue sticking out, flowing mane, a strong and powerful waist and back, a raised tail, slightly bent hind legs, and front paws pouncing forward, interacting lively and enthusiastically with the Hu person.
Bronze Basin with Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove Pattern
The Bronze Basin with Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove Pattern is a Qing Dynasty artifact. The bottom diameter of the basin is 35.8 cm, the mouth diameter is 52.5 cm, and the height is 11.3 cm. The basin has a straight belly and a flat bottom. The wide folded edge is entirely engraved with six crabapple flower-shaped openwork designs, with patterns of plum blossoms, peonies, bamboo, chrysanthemums, lotuses, and orchids inside the openwork. Between the openwork designs are six different characters such as "Wang" and "Gong."
Upon close observation, the center of the basin is engraved with a scene of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove playing chess. During the Wei and Jin periods, some literati and scholars lived in seclusion in the mountains, indulging in nature and living a life detached from the mundane world. At that time, Ji Kang, Ruan Ji, Xiang Xiu, Liu Ling, Ruan Xian, Shan Tao, and Wang Rong often gathered in the mountains and forests, ignoring worldly affairs, composing poems, playing chess, and playing the zither, known as the "Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove." The outer ring of the basin bottom is decorated with fluttering butterfly patterns.
This basin is decorated using the engraving technique, with delicate carvings, smooth and natural lines, and vivid and exquisite pictures, making it a fine example of similar craftworks.
Bronze Statues of Tsongkhapa and His Two Disciples
In Tibetan Buddhism, the statues of Tsongkhapa, Gyatso Je, and Khedrub Je are collectively known as the "Three Masters and Disciples."
The Wuhai Museum's collection of bronze statues of Tsongkhapa and his two disciples shows different expressions. The three statues are placed together, with Tsongkhapa in the center at the back.
Tsongkhapa sits in a vajra posture on a lotus seat, wearing a yellow pandit hat, with eyes slightly lowered, a round face, a serene expression, wearing monastic robes, with both hands forming the teaching mudra at the chest. Originally, there were a Prajnaparamita Sutra and a wisdom sword inserted on both sides of his shoulders, which are now lost. In front of him are his two disciples, Gyatso Je and Khedrub Je, both wearing monastic robes. The left hand holding a scripture is lost, and the right hand forms the teaching mudra, sitting on a square pedestal.
Gyatso Je, Tsongkhapa's senior disciple, was a disciple of the Sakya school and later became a disciple of Tsongkhapa. When Tsongkhapa passed away, he was given the robe and hat, making him the second throne holder of Ganden Monastery. Tsongkhapa's second disciple, Khedrub Je, became the third throne holder of Ganden Monastery after Gyatso Je stepped down. After the establishment of the Panchen Lama system, he was posthumously recognized as the first Panchen Lama. Gyatso Je and Khedrub Je, as Tsongkhapa's two major assistants, played a foundational role in the establishment of the Gelug school.
Wuhai Xingtai Mingdu Holiday Hotel
I booked in advance on Ctrip, and the price hadn't changed at that time, two days for 388
The hotel is relatively old, and the decoration looks like it's from more than ten years ago, but the room is quite large๐
The room I stayed in had a lake view with a fairly large window, but it wasn't a floor-to-ceiling window. The screen was very dirty, and the bed sheets and duvet cover were also quite old. I stayed in a twin room; the beds were very small, but the carpet was very large and clean
The hotel allows food delivery to be sent directly to the room. How should I put it? I don't particularly like this. When staying in a hotel, I think safety is more important.
The hotel is not by the lake; there is a row of buildings in front. I really wanted to go and see if the other side was a hotel, feeling the urge to change to another oneโ๏ธ
The hotel is a ten-minute walk from Pier No. 1 according to the guide I read, but when I checked in and asked the front desk, they said it's best to drive there~ Wuhai Qixing Hotel

Wuhai | There is a so-called Thousand Island Lake in Wuhai Lake
๐The Wuhai Lake Ecological Tourism Area is formed by the 118-square-kilometer gentle water surface and surrounding lake area created after the completion of the Yellow River Haibowan District Water Conservancy Project. Together with the Gandershan Ecological Civilization Scenic Area, it presents a spectacular scene where water and sand reflect each other and mountains and water are connected. It traverses Wuhai City from north to south, covering scenic spots such as the Ulan Buh Desert, Ulan Naor Lake, Wuhai Lake, Poplar Island, and Rabbit Island. Looking from east to west, the clear water stretches to the horizon, reaching the golden sandy shore. On one side is the clear water, and on the other side is the golden sand, creating a magnificent and natural picture, forming a beautiful painting of 'a peaceful lake emerging from the desert, and a Jiangnan in the frontier'.
๐The Thousand Island Lake is within the Wuhai Lake Scenic Area. Locals also call it the Island within an Island, which I think is a more fitting name because... there is really only one island. Although there is only one island, the scenery is still quite nice. The island is lush and green, providing a refreshing view. The surrounding area has the atmosphere of a tropical resort. To the east stands the majestic Khan Mountain of Genghis Khan. Viewing the island from different angles offers different kinds of beauty, making it a delightful sight.
๐However, to be honest, the name is a bit exaggerated. Compared to the Thousand Island Lake in Zhejiang, it falls far short, haha.
