It is a historic city with world-class attractions and architecture, including a magnificent university, award-winning pubs and restaurants, and is a famous ancient capital of England. Today, it has evolved into an aristocratic boarding school for boys only. The college was founded in 1382 and designed by a famous architect. The architecture is breathtaking. Most of the buildings are still in use, including the student canteen, where students still eat at wooden long tables that are over 600 years old. Outsiders are not allowed to enter the school, but you can join one of the two guided tours led by teachers every day. You can book directly at the school gate or online. 🕙 Two tours daily at 2:15 pm and 3:30 pm, each lasting one hour. 🎫 £12 You can visit the Treasury at the school gate (Image 9️⃣). It is not very big and there are not many exhibits. The museum was converted from a stable. 🕙 Daily 14:00–16:00 🎫 Free . 🔵 Jane Austen's House (Image 11) is next to the college. It is still a private residence and cannot be entered. The bookstore next door (Image 12) sells some books and related products. . 🟣 Abbey Gardens (Images 4️⃣5️⃣): The River Itchen, which flows through Winchester, is an important chalk river. There are only about 200 chalk rivers in the world, more than three-quarters of which are found in the UK. The garden is an open park by the river. 🟤 High Street is the busiest shopping street (last image). 🔴 Image 1️⃣2️⃣ St. Giles Hill Observation Deck is highly recommended! The hill is not high and has steps. The observation deck has chairs where you can rest and watch the sunset. When navigating, do not use the name of the hill. Use the coordinates SO23 0JJ to avoid detours. .

Wolvesey Castle was one of the greatest medieval buildings in England – the palace of the powerful and wealthy bishops of Winchester. One of the most important Norman palaces in England, it was built during a period when Winchester was second only to London as a royal and ecclesiastical centre. The palace remained in use until the 1680s, when Bishop George Morley decided to build a new palace nearby. The medieval Bishops of Winchester were rich and powerful men, the relations and advisers of kings. Wolvesey, standing a stone's throw from Winchester Cathedral, was their main residence throughout the Middle Ages. The extensive remains date largely from the great 12th century palace of Bishop Henry of Blois, brother of King Stephen. Though ruinous, the buildings still evoke an impression of their former grandeur. The last great occasion here was on 25th July 1554, when the East Hall was transformed with silk and gold hangings for Queen Mary and Philip of Spain's wedding banquet. #castle #unitedkingdom

Visited Winchester Cathedral today (Boxing Day). The entrance fee is £10 good for an annual pass which is worth it. As you enter inside the cathedral you'll see stunning architectural designs which is full of history and information in the past. Because Winchester is not well-known, many tourists visiting the UK only arrange trips to Windsor, Cambridge, Oxford, and Bath, leaving Winchester alone. The urban area is not big, so we walked the whole way, which was very pleasant and relaxing. The carts were unobstructed. There were only a small section of stone roads and narrow sidewalks south of the cathedral and near the ruins of the old city. The Farmer's Market in Winchester is the largest in the UK. If you can visit on the last Sunday of every month, don't forget to browse and taste Hampshire honey, local fruits and vegetables, etc. There are many restaurants, bars, and cafes along the way in the city. You can stop at any time and find a cute shop to sit down and rest. #外游

Winchester Cathedral is one of the largest churches in England. Located in Winchester, Henley County, it is also the church with the longest nave in Europe, at about 160 meters long. The church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Swithin, and is the cathedral of Winchester and the centre of the Diocese of Winchester. The library upstairs in the church houses medieval sculptures and manuscripts, which are well worth a look. You can visit the gorgeous cathedral where Jane Austen is buried. Or her sister’s house where she spent the last months or her life. It's a long-distance footpath and bridleway offering diverse terrain and beautiful scenery, popular with walkers and cyclists. The city of Winchester attracts tourists from far and wide. There is no best time to go since it receives hundreds of thousands of visitors throughout the year. However, it boasts a wide range of pubs and restaurants and there are fine walks in and around the city. It is known for its fine medieval Cathedral. Read the history of the diver who made the perilous journey underground below to rescue its foundations. You will be impressed. Call in at the Wykeham Arms for a fine pub meal and or sample its fine guest ales. A year round destination you won't be disappointed.

This summer in July, I had the unforgettable experience of joining a literary tour and Jane Austen conference in Southampton and then Winchester to celebrate 250 years since the birth of Jane Austen. As a lifelong admirer of her novels, I knew this would be special, but I hadn’t expected just how moving and inspiring it would be to walk in her footsteps. We began in Southampton, a city where Austen lived from 1806 to 1809. Although her original home no longer stands, wandering through the Georgian streets, imagining her taking similar walks along the Western Esplanade, brought her world vividly to life. We visited spots where she would have danced, socialised, and perhaps even observed the kinds of characters who would later appear in her novels. There’s something quite powerful about being in a place where literary history once quietly unfolded. From there, we travelled to Winchester, where Austen spent her final months. Walking down College Street to the house where she passed away felt deeply poignant. But nothing compared to standing inside Winchester Cathedral, facing her resting place. It’s a moment I’ll never forget—surrounded by soaring stone, I was struck by the quiet strength of her legacy. Her grave is simple, but the love and respect from generations of readers give it weight. Throughout the tour, we were treated to readings, lively performances, talks by Austen scholars. Sharing these moments with fellow readers and conference participants from around the world reminded me how timeless and unifying her stories really are. Celebrating Jane Austen’s 250th anniversary in the cities that shaped her life was more than a literary getaway. Don’t miss Winchester Cathedral, Winchester College, and the nearby Jane Austen’s House. The High Street has lovely shops, a cute post office, and a peaceful riverside walk. Historic buildings are everywhere — it’s a truly beautiful place. A great day trip from London. Stop by the tourist centre for free maps and leaflets. You can see most of the town in one day, but there are plenty of other sights if you want to stay longer.

Winchester is worth a day trip if you’re in a commutable distance - the architecture and vibes alone make it a great place to visit, but the free and cheap activities only increase its worth! 🌿 We went to the City Mill, a free National Trust property, which has a working flour mill and water wheel. It’s right on the river with some pretty views. 📜 We bought the Explorer ticket at the Great Hall for around £13, this got us in to not only the Great Hall with the giant table, but also the City Museum, and the Gate Museum. The Gate Museum with its high vantage point and interesting info was my favourite! 🤩 By far, one of my biggest recommendations though is the Tillius gift and decor shop. If you’re into the slightly weird and wonderful - it fits the vibe! They have some really nice jewellery too!
