The vast majority of people have never visited this beautiful Baltic microstate
After my trip to the three Baltic States, I really liked Lithuania as an off-the-beaten-path destination. Of course, when you come to Lithuania, you have to visit Vilnius. I've summarized a fun guide to the Old Town of Vilnius, and this article is all you need!
▫️
💛Fun💛
📍Vilnius Cathedral:
A very important local church, the interior is Baroque style, but it used to be wooden Gothic. The building is very well-preserved, and the murals and pipe organ inside are exquisite.
·
📍Gate of Dawn:
The old city gate, also the only one of the original nine gates that is still intact. Walking through the gate, you enter the Old Town of Vilnius.
·
📍St. Anne's Church:
A small and beautiful brick-red church, with very delicate lines and turrets. It is said that Napoleon wanted to 'move' the entire building to France because of its beauty.
·
📍Užupis:
Known as 'the land across the river,' this place used to be a gathering spot for hippies, so you can see a passionate and cheerful style from the graffiti and sculptures.
·
📍Gediminas' Tower:
It is said that Grand Duke Gediminas had a dream about an iron wolf, and then he ordered the construction of this fortress. It's a great spot to overlook the Old Town and take beautiful panoramic photos.
·
📍Hill of Three Crosses:
Located on the Hill of Three Crosses, the scenery along the way is truly beautiful in autumn. It's also a good spot to view the cityscape, but there are often many young people who come here to hike and run.
·
📍Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania:
It is now a museum witnessing the history of Lithuania, but many people say that the museum's collection is not very large, and those who don't like to visit exhibitions or museums can take photos outside.
▫️
❤️Eat❤️
Lithuanian cuisine is still dominated by big fish and meat, and the cooking methods are relatively simple, so for someone with a Sichuan stomach like mine, it's really not acceptable. However, you can buy Southeast Asian spices in many supermarkets here, so if you want something spicy, you can consider that.
Gediminas tower in Vilnius
The Gediminas tower is the last remaining part of the upper castle still standing to this day. It was originally built as a wooden castle in the 13th century before being replaced by stone castles in later years.
The castle and hill is named after Gediminas, a Latvian king who is renowned in folklore. The castle tower is so important and iconic it used to feature on the former Latvian currency! Entry costs five euros for adults and a visit is highly recommended.
The former KGB headquarters in Vilnius
I visited the former KGB base in Vilnius. It is now a museum that documents the atrocities this organisation committed when Russia occupied Lithuania. It is very interesting and one of the few museums based in the same building the KGB used to operate from.
Entry for adults is six euros, though concessions are available for students and Ukrainian refugees. In the basement are over a dozen prison cells and even an execution chamber.
Vilnius, a city steeped in history
Lithuania was the first Soviet republic to declare independence from the Soviet Union. Therefore, when I was in Poland and decided to visit the Baltic countries, I should have started in Lithuania, the southernmost and largest of them. Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is built at the confluence of the Vilnia and Neris rivers and is located almost in the center of the country. A trip to Vilnius will immerse you in history.
I traveled from Katowice (Poland) to Vilnius on June 8, 2023 with Felixbus for 29 euros.
Best places to visit:
Old Town, St. Anne’s Church, Hill of Three Crosses, Vilnius Cathedral, Gate of Dawn and Gediminas Tower

The Enchanting Allure of Kūdrų Parkas
Kūdrų Parkas, established in 1992, is a national park in Lithuania known for its unique raised bogs and wetland ecosystems. Designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, the park aims to preserve and protect the region's valuable biodiversity. Offering ecotourism opportunities, visitors can explore boardwalk trails and observe diverse flora and fauna in this remarkable wetland environment.
Amidst the green expanse, I roam,
In Kūdrų Parkas, nature's home,
Raised bogs rise, a marvel to see,
A sanctuary for life to be free.
Wetlands alive, teeming with grace,
A vibrant tapestry, nature's embrace,
Flora and fauna, in harmony dance,
Kūdrų Parkas, a cherished chance.
With every step, I'm in awe,
In this haven, nature's grandest draw,
Oh, Kūdrų Parkas, a treasure untold,
Forever in my heart, your wonders enfold.

3 top things to do in Vilnius, Lithuania.
Are you wondering a trip heading to one of the Baltic Sea countries in Europe? Lithuania is one of the most prettiest countries with gorgeous historical sites and buildings. You may wonder what things to do could briefly know the place of history and story around the old town based city. In this article, we will see some of my selection of the things to do and to go around Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania. This is just my subjective guided after few days of getting exposed in this country without long-term staying. If you are looking for a short stay as few days there, you may find some interesting things to see at this article.
Lithuania, officially the Republic of Lithuania, is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. It is one of three Baltic states and lies on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea. There are some impressive buildings in the Old Town and best way to see it all is to explore the city centre on foot.
The first thing to look at is the Gediminas Castle Tower. This 3-story brick tower was originally part of a castle constructed in the 15th century. It represents as the national pride for many people and national of the Lithuania. It is also one of the most iconic buildings stood high at the city centre. It is the remaining part of the Upper Castle in Vilnius, Lithuania. The first wooden fortifications were built by Gediminas, Grand Duke of Lithuania. The first brick castle was completed in 1409 by Grand Duke Vytautas. The three-floor tower was rebuilt in 1933 by Polish architect Jan Borowski. You can see the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania from the window of the tower and which is the second part of the things I want to take you to go.
The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania also is a museum featuring a variety of art, archaeology & history exhibits in a reconstructed palace. It uses incredible virtual historical 3D experience in various contexts from showing what lifestyle of the people in the past is and how this palace being built in different ways. It is also reputable as the 'best museum in Lithuania'.
The Vilnius Cathedral is the third to go. Its classical-style Roman Catholic cathedral on an old pagan temple site with 11 side chapels can blow your mind if this is your first time being in Europe. It is located by the main square of the Vilnius Old Town, right in front of the neo-classical Vilnius Cathedral. It is a key location in city's public life, situated as it is at the crossing of the city's main streets and reflecting the city's diversity.

Come see Vilnius University!
On Monday, I walked around Old Town with a newcomer to Lithuania.
We traveled to see Vilnius University - walk around Old Town - see Vilnius Cathedral✨
Vilnius University is a historic building that has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
Maybe that's why they were filming a movie with an old background in the square inside the school on the day I visited😆
It was amazing to see actors wearing medieval dresses!!
And Vilnius Cathedral, which is always at the beginning and end of Vilnius Old Town!
It's really pretty to take pictures when the sun is up👏👏💗
If you visit Vilnius, stop by Vilnius University and Cathedral and take lots of pretty pictures❣️
