Grave of Ono no Komachi (stone stupa)
Ono no Komachi's Grave (Stone Gorinto)
Ono no Komachi was a poet of the Heian period who was praised as a peerless beauty.
According to legend, while traveling from Kyoto to Oshu (Tohoku region),
she visited Kiyotaki Kannon Temple and then Kitamuki Kannon Temple (Onogoshi, Yago-cho) and fell ill after praying.
She was cared for kindly at the home of the local village mayor, Ono Genbei, but it is said that she died on July 7, 1291, at the age of 69.
Since her death, the Ono family has continued to hold memorial services for her every year on July 7 (lunar calendar), the anniversary of her death, and in the past, there were many pilgrims from nearby areas.
Komachi's grave was often visited by people suffering from gynecological diseases, and by young girls of marriageable age, who were said to become beautiful if they visited the grave.
There are many "horoku" (unglazed frying pan-like objects used for frying beans) offered in front of the grave.
It is said that one was borrowed when making a prayer,
and when the wish was granted, two were returned.
Also, on the left side of the grave, there is a stone that Oda Ujiharu (Ten'an), the lord of Oda Castle, had carved with his own signature, "Shinka-seki" (heart flower stone), in the hope that the Komachi ruins would be preserved for future generations.
In addition, in front of the tomb, there is a natural stone Mitaraiishi (stone for washing the hands of women), which was donated in July 1908 by Tokyo's Takano Tsunezo, who said, "After receiving news in a dream, he visited Komachi's tomb to pray, and his beloved wife was cured of a rare illness that the doctor had given up on." This was written on the Tsuchiura City Tourism Association and on the Tsuchiura City Tourism Association sign next to the tomb! There are many legends about Ono no Komachi's tomb all over the country, and although we don't know which ones are actually true, it might be interesting to visit here and try to guess the history!! #Ono no Komachi's tomb #Ono no Komachi's tomb #Ibaraki Prefecture #Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture #Tsuchiura City #Legend of Ono no Komachi #Ono no Komachi's village #Lowest attractive prefecture
