Every European city must visit their cathedral
Spanish Mediterranean Coast Tour ~ Tarragona (Region)
Its construction began in 1184 on the ruins of an older Christian cathedral, which in turn was built on top of a 10th-century Arab mosque. It is in Romanesque style, transitioning towards Gothic. The church is in the shape of a Latin cross, with three naves and a prominent transept, above which rises an impressive octagonal dome. The nave ends with three circular apses. On the main facade we see two striking 12th-century Romanesque portals, and a magnificent rose window with openwork tracery. The vertical frame of the door features an image of the Virgin and Child. Inside, we can see towering 15th-century frescoes by Pere Johan. It is made of polychrome alabaster and its most striking feature is the trilogy of sculptures representing the Virgin, Santa Tecla and Santa Paula. The Archbishop’s tomb above the high altar is one of the temple’s Gothic treasures, as is the Santa Maria Chapel, which dates from the 14th century. At the Diocesan Museum, a fine collection of tapestries from a Brussels workshop and repaintings by Jaime Huguet stand out.

The most representative works of modernism
Spanish Mediterranean Coast Tour ~ Tarragona (Region)
Grego House, also known as Fontante House, is considered the most representative modernist work of municipal architect Monguió. This is a magnificent building located on the corner of Porta Romeu, in Piazza Cinta. This fact adds extra charm to the building, as we are looking at a modernist building with a baroque facade in front and medieval arches on the sides.
The architect avoided the geometric decorations, ceramics and bricks present in the work, opting instead for a freer composition where curved lines predominate. Vibrant moldings, continuous balconies, and windows and openings of varying shapes serve as a backdrop for the competition between glass, wood, metal, and colorful graffiti.

The building is a fine example of Catalan Civil Gothic architecture, especially its elegant central courtyard.
Spanish Mediterranean Coast Tour ~ Tarragona (Region)
It is located next to the cathedral and was built in the traditional style of Catalan civil Gothic architecture from the 14th and 15th centuries.
It has a rectangular plan, made of ashlar stonework, and is built around an elegant central courtyard, where a floating staircase leads to the gallery, which is located on the "piano grande" (first floor) and has simple, slender pointed arches.
It has various rooms with Gothic vaults and a notable chapel (early 14th century): it has a rectangular plan and two sections with ribbed roofs, and a chancel with two corner naves opening onto an oval star-shaped vault. The entrance has a pointed arch flanked by two Gothic windows. Outside, the facade features windows with trefoil arches.

Tortosa Castle
Spanish Mediterranean Coast Tour ~ Tarragona (Region)
It was the capital of an ancient Muslim Taifa kingdom, towering over a strategic crossroads between the Roman Via Augusta and the Ebro River.
Restored in modern times and converted into the Parador Hotel, it was an important fortress during the Muslim era and the subsequent Christian period. It was built in 944 and the elements of the original Arab architecture that still remain include the enclosure, which follows the design of the hill on which it is built and is reinforced by square towers and circular towers of the Tubal or Diamant. Tattoo.
It also has several different arches that give access to the walls and various buildings (Armory, Bailey, Underground Gallery, Silos and Central Well) that mainly date back to the Gothic Reform in the 14th century, when it was used as a royal palace. It marks the beginning of the medieval city walls, some parts of which and gates, such as the Remollin Gate (14th century), are still visible today.

Another church built on ruins
Spanish Mediterranean Coast Tour ~ Tarragona (Region)
Its construction began in 1347 on the ruins of a Romanesque cathedral and was completed two centuries later. The Baroque-style facade was built in the 18th century. Designed by Benito Dalguayre, it has three naves with chapels between the buttresses, and a cloister with radiating chapels. The 13th-century cloister adjoins the south side of the building and is accessible from the inside through the Oliveira Gate. Highlights of the interior include the main altarpiece with 14th-century paintings, the holy water font designed by Cristóbal de Salamanca, and the choir stalls.

Spanish Mediterranean Coast Tour ~ Tarragona (Region)
The city is located near the mouth of the Ebro River, and the first thing that catches one's attention is the Arab castle of Rasuda, which sits on a hill. Visitors can stay there if they wish, as it has been converted into the Parador de Turismo hotel. Along the river is the old part of town, with its 14th-century Gothic cathedral with a Baroque facade, three naves and a cloister, which features richly colored 14th-century frescoes on the high walls, a 15th-century redecoration of the Transfiguration, and the 18th-century Church of La Cinta, built of Italian marble and Tortosa jasper. Visitors can also admire the 14th-century Episcopal Palace, with its courtyards, galleries and remarkable staircase, which houses a chapel from 1316 with a polychrome stone door and 14th-century sculptures. Also of interest are the Gothic cloisters of the Santa Clara Monastery (14th century); the Royal Academy of Tortosa, founded by Carlos V in 1564 for the education of Muslim subjects; the modernist market with its metal structures; the exchange (from the 14th century), where the price of wheat for the entire western Mediterranean basin was determined; in addition, you can visit the Remolins neighborhood, where you will find the old Jewish quarter, the calle de Els Gentilhomes and the palace of the Puig family.
