The Tianshui Museum is located behind the Fuxi Temple. After visiting the Fuxi Temple, there is a gate. Exit through the gate to reach the Tianshui Museum. After visiting the museum, re-enter the Fuxi Temple through the gate and then exit from the main entrance of the Fuxi Temple. Although small, the Tianshui Museum is a National First-Class Museum. Its most treasured artifact is the Sui and Tang Dynasty gilt-decorated screen stone bed. This artifact is housed in a separate room, with a maximum capacity of 10 people at a time and a maximum stay of 8 minutes. Of course, during the off-season, there are not many people. It takes about an hour to see the entire museum.

Gansu Province has a free admission policy for cultural and tourism sites. The cheapest attraction on the list is the Fuxi Temple, so tourists coming to Tianshui recently have been buying a CNY 20 ticket (CNY 10 for children) at the Fuxi Temple first. After filling out information at the ticket office, they exchange it for a blue pass, which grants free admission to all the attractions on the list. Our main destination was Maijishan Grottoes, and since there were four of us, it was worth getting the pass. If you're traveling alone or as a couple, consider the transportation and time involved, as Maijishan and Fuxi Temple are in opposite directions. From Tianshui South High-Speed Railway Station, there are direct buses to Qinzhou District and Maiji District. We hired a car, and the driver picked us up from the station and took us directly to Fuxi Temple. After our visit, we went to Maijishan. If you're taking public transport, there's a direct bus from Fuxi Temple to Maijishan. Fuxi Temple and the Tianshui Museum are located together and share the same ticket. It takes about an hour to see everything, with the museum taking up most of the time. You can see Fuxi Temple in about half an hour. To see 5,000 years of history, visit Shanxi. To see 8,000 years of history, visit Gansu. The Fuxi Temple in Tianshui is considered the origin of Chinese civilization. Tianshui is a worthwhile place to visit in Gansu, but unfortunately, we only had time for a day trip. There's an old street opposite Fuxi Temple, and many places to explore nearby. The famous Yuan Nü Mala Tang is located on the opposite street near the T-junction. There's also the "Little Potala Palace" (which I thought was a bit underwhelming, haha. The driver told me about it, but it felt like a slum).

Day2｜Fuxi Temple and Tianshui Ancient City: Cultural Imprints that Pass Through Thousands of Years The afternoon sun shines on the glazed tiles of Fuxi Temple. This Ming Dynasty building complex is solemn and majestic. The thousand-year-old cypress trees in the courtyard are verdant and tall, and the statue of Fuxi is filled with incense, which makes people think about the origin of Chinese civilization. Take a stroll through the ancient city of Tianshui in the evening, where the blue brick and gray tile houses of the Ming and Qing dynasties and the red lanterns complement each other. In a small shop at the corner of the alley, a bowl of steaming Tianshui Guagua (jelly) with chili oil is sour and spicy, which is appetizing and instantly captures the taste buds. In the antique shop, the hand-painted Maijishan Grottoes postcards and "Tian Xiaoxian" cultural and creative ice cream became the most special souvenirs of this trip. Day 3｜Yuquan Temple and Hu Family Residence: Taoist Culture and Longshang Countryside Get up early and climb up to Yuquan Temple. The ancient buildings are looming in the morning mist. Taoist temples are scattered around in an orderly manner. Winter plum blossoms are just beginning to bloom in the courtyards, and the curling incense seems to have traveled through a thousand years. We visited the Hu family residence in the afternoon. The green tiles and white walls concealed the flavor of the rural life in Longshan. The owner warmly invited us to experience the traditional threshing ground. The sound of wheat grains flowing in the stone mill slowed down time. Tips 1. Transportation: The high-speed rail takes 2 hours to reach Tianshui South Station, and taxis or buses are convenient in the city. 2. The Maijishan Grottoes are one of China's famous grotto art treasures and are known as the "Oriental Sculpture Exhibition Hall". They are known as one of the four major grottoes in China along with the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, and the Yungang Grottoes in Datong. Geographical location and origin of the name The Maijishan Grottoes are located on the branch of Xiaolong Mountain at the northern foot of the Qinling Mountains, 30 kilometers southeast of Tianshui City, Gansu Province. It is located in the upper reaches of the Wei River and is known as "Jiangnan on the Long Mountains". Its name comes from the shape of the mountain. From a distance, the lower part of the mountain is smaller, the middle part is more prominent, and the top is gathered into a cone shape, resembling a farmer's haystack, hence the name. Excavation History The excavation of Maijishan Grottoes began in the Sixteen Kingdoms Period (384-417), and continued to be built through more than ten dynasties, including the Northern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing, forming a large-scale grotto complex. Among them, the Northern Wei Dynasty was one of the peak periods for the excavation of the Maijishan Grottoes. There are 221 caves, 3,938 statues and more than 1,000 square meters of murals in the Maijishan Grottoes. The statues and murals in the grottoes showcase the artistic style of more than 1,600 years from the Later Qin Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, and the works from different eras have different styles. For example: • During the Later Qin and Northern Wei dynasties: statues had high noses, deep eyes, broad shoulders and thin waists, and a simple style. • Western Wei Dynasty: The characters are beautiful and dignified, with loose clothes and wide belts. • Northern Zhou and Sui Dynasties: The statues are graceful and plump, with fine folds in the clothes. • Tang Dynasty: Characters have gentle faces and brightly colored clothing. • Song Dynasty: The statues became more beautiful and delicate, with realistic and smooth styles. Among them, the little monk statue in Cave 133 is famous for its innocent "smile", and the statue in Cave 44 is called the "Oriental Beauty" for its kind and peaceful smile. They are the iconic works of Maijishan Grottoes. Artistic Features Maijishan Grottoes are dominated by clay sculptures and is one of the areas with the richest preservation of clay sculptures in Chinese grottoes. The statues have diverse styles, influenced by Indian Buddhist art and incorporating Chinese local art elements, forming a unique artistic style. In addition, the plank road of Maijishan Grottoes is also one of its major features. The plank road was built in sections, staggered and rising in a zigzag shape, adapting to the complex mountain terrain. Protection and Restoration Because it is located in a forest area and has a rainy and humid climate, the statues and murals of the Maijishan Grottoes are prone to hollowing, cracking, fading and other diseases. In recent decades, cultural relics protection workers have effectively protected the grottoes through measures such as reinforcement and restoration, water seepage control and biological control. The Maijishan Grottoes are not only a treasure of ancient Chinese art, but also an important cultural heritage on the Silk Road. It bears witness to the spread and development of Buddhist art in China and has extremely high historical and artistic value.
