Tartu Cathedral was formerly a Catholic church. Today, it is now ruins after it was damaged in a war in 1525. While the structure of the cathedral remains firm and solid (and hence safe to walk through the ruins), there is visible damage to the pillars and arches of this brick gothic building. In recent times, a small part of the cathedral has been renovated to house the museum of the University of Tartu. Tartu Cathedral is free to visit. Easily reachable with a 2-hours train from the capital, this city is a perfect fairytale winter escape with its snowy landscape and mix of Baltics tradition and innovation. Walking around the city center you can either explore Tartu with a special tour dedicated to its memorable (and sometimes funny) statues and have a warm coffee break in one of its cozy cafeterias were you could taste the delicious vastla-kukkel dessert. 🧁 If you’re visiting between November and February, you need to spend a fun afternoon skating on the ice rink in front of one of Tartu’s landmarks, the town hall with its lovers’ statue in the middle of the square. It is possible to rent the equipment directly on site ⛸️ Finally, a visit to the National Museum of Estonia is highly recommended. By visiting it, you could get to know more about local folklore, learning more about famous Estonian people as well as its pre and post Soviet era. Tartu Town Hall Square is a trapezoidal central square located in the heart of Tartu, surrounded by classical buildings. The current Town Hall is the third building built on this spot. In the 18th century, the square was the city's most important market, called "Der Groß Markt" or "Big Market". Since 1998, the square has also become a prominent landmark, with a fountain of kissing students. Every day, the bells ring out from the Town Hall tower. The 18 bells were cast at a bell foundry in Karlsruhe, Germany, and 16 were cast to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the bells played at the Royal Eisbout Belfry in the Netherlands. I travelled to Estonia for a couple of days and took the chance to visit Tartu, which is the capital of southern Estonia. It was a fruitful day with loads of interesting finds. Tartu's Town Hall Square is surrounded by classical buildings and laid with cobblestones paths. There is a prominent sculpture and fountain named Kissing Students, where newly weds would visit for luck. Directly across the Square is a bright yellow National Geographic window erected in the Town Hall Square which symbolises Tartu as one of the places in Southern Estonia worth visiting. #createwithtrip #culturewalk #estonia
