The most beautiful place in Phuket for sunrise
Samet Nangshe Viewpoint is one of those places worth waking up at 3 AM for. It's not just a viewpoint but, without exaggeration, one of the most breathtaking panoramas in all of Thailand.
What is Samet Nangshe Viewpoint?
Imagine this: you're standing atop a limestone hill, and before you lies the endless Phang Nga Bay. Dozens of lush green islets rise from the emerald waters, and in the distance, the sun rises, painting the sky in surreal pink and orange hues. This is Samet Nangshe.
This spot has become a true hit among photographers and nature lovers thanks to its absolutely epic view.
Why is it a must to catch the sunrise?
· Magical lighting: Early morning light is soft and diffused. Mist and clouds often add a mystical and dimensional touch to the scene. The view of limestone cliffs bathed in the rays of the rising sun is a sight you'll never forget.
· Cool weather: The climb to the viewpoint requires some effort, and doing it in the pre-dawn coolness is much more comfortable than in the midday heat.
· Fewer people: Although the place is popular, it's much less crowded at sunrise than during the day.
Important: Visiting during the day, especially in sunny weather, is not the best idea. The panorama will be flooded with harsh light and may appear flat, and climbing under the scorching sun will be unpleasant.
How to get there from Phuket
Samet Nangshe is located in Phang Nga province, on the mainland. The drive from Phuket takes about 1 hour.
Your sunrise plan:
1. Departure from Phuket: Book a taxi or transfer with a fixed price. You'll need to leave your hotel around 3:00 - 3:30 AM to make it in time for sunrise (around 5:30-6:00 AM, depending on the season).
· Taxi cost (round trip with waiting): ~2000 - 3000 baht. Be sure to arrange for the driver to wait for you for a few hours to take you back, as finding transport back is nearly impossible.
2. Alternative option — renting a motorbike: Only for experienced drivers! The nighttime road with winding paths can be challenging. But it gives you more freedom.
3. Route: Drivers know this place. The landmark is Takua Thung district in Phang Nga province.
What awaits you on-site: the final climb
When you reach the coordinates, you'll find yourself at the foot of the hill. There's a small parking area, cafes (which open later), and the starting point for the final ascent.
You have three options:
1. Walking: It's a fairly steep trail. It takes about 15-25 minutes depending on your fitness level. Bring water and a flashlight (your phone's light will do).
2. Pickup truck ride (recommended): For an additional fee (~50-100 baht per person one way), you can ride in the back of a pickup truck up the steep road almost to the top. This saves you time and energy. From the truck's final stop, it's just a 2-3 minute walk to the very top.
3. New viewpoint: A new, more comfortable viewpoint with binoculars has been added near the old one. The ascent there is also done by pickup truck.
Practical tips
· Best time to visit: Dry season from November to April. During this time, there are fewer clouds and a higher chance of a clear, beautiful sunrise.
· What to bring:
· Flashlight or phone with a flashlight.
· Water and a light snack.
· Mosquito repellent (they're in the jungle!).
· Warm clothing (yes, in Thailand!). It can be quite windy and cool at the top during sunrise, especially after the heat of Phuket.
· A good camera and power bank.
· Difficulty level: Easy/medium if you use the pickup truck. The walk requires some physical fitness.
