The Beginning of Mythology in Miyazaki
Ever since seeing a photo, it has been etched in my mind, reminding me to one day seek out this beautiful scenery. Located in Takachiho Gorge in Miyazaki Prefecture, this gorge was formed by lava from the eruptions of Mount Aso, which cooled rapidly to create the canyon, accompanied by waterfalls. Moreover, the legendary Takachiho is said to be the birthplace of Japanese mythology, with many mythological stories originating here, combining natural beauty with cultural significance.
If you want to experience boating, you need to make a reservation in advance, as same-day bookings may be full, preventing your group from boating. Each boat ride lasts only 30 minutes and costs around ¥4,100—¥5,100, with a maximum of 3 people per boat.
Transportation: It is recommended to join a local day tour for convenience, as the location is relatively remote and there are not many nearby transportation options.
A must-see in Kyushu is the super beautiful Takachiho Gorge
#fukuokatravel
Takachiho Gorge is indeed a mythical place. The beautiful canyon has a dreamy feeling.
Boating is highly recommended. You must make a reservation online 2 weeks in advance.
The venue is almost fully booked and reservations are not allowed! !
Takachiho Gorge is a columnar jointed cliff canyon formed by the volcanic activity of Mount Aso a long time ago. The lava flows erupted from it. The cliffs on both sides have a drop of nearly 20 meters in beautiful scenery. The three bridges erected over the canyon are even more impressive from a distance. The beauty of Takachiho Gorge😍😍

Takachiho Gorge
Located in Miyazaki Prefecture, Takachiho Gorge is one of the most popular destinations for travelers visiting Kyushu. The gorge was formed by the rapid cooling of ancient lava flows, resulting in columnar joints that create a stunningly beautiful canyon. Visitors can marvel at the 17-meter-high Manai Falls cascading down, not only from above but also by leisurely boating at the bottom of the gorge. This natural wonder is truly breathtaking. 😍📷💯

Amanoiwato Shrine
A shrine revered by the people of Kyushu for generations. It is believed that the deity Amaterasu hid in this cave out of fear of the deity Susanoo, plunging the world into darkness. Later, Amaterasu was coaxed out by the other deities through festive activities in front of the cave, bringing light back to the world.
**Amanoiwato Shrine** (天岩戸神社, Amanoiwato-jinja) is a Shinto shrine located in Takachiho, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. This shrine holds significant importance in Japanese mythology as it is associated with the legend of the sun goddess **Amaterasu**. According to the legend, Amaterasu hid herself in a cave called **Amanoiwato** (meaning 'Heavenly Rock Cave') after being angered by her brother Susanoo. This event caused the world to be engulfed in darkness since she is the sun goddess. The other deities gathered outside the cave to devise a plan to lure her out, which involved the passionate dance of the goddess Ame-no-Uzume. Eventually, Amaterasu was drawn out, bringing light back to the world.
### Key Features of Amanoiwato Shrine:
- **Mythological Significance**: The shrine is built near the Amanoiwato cave, believed to be the hiding place of Amaterasu. The cave itself is not open to the public, but visitors can view it from a sacred observation point nearby, guided by the shrine's priests.
- **Sacred River**: Near the shrine is **Amano-Yasukawara**, a small cave by the Iwato River where the deities gathered to discuss how to bring Amaterasu out of the cave. It is a pilgrimage site where visitors leave stone piles as offerings.
- **Cultural Importance**: The shrine and its surroundings are considered one of the most sacred sites in Shinto, deeply connected to the origins of Shinto mythology.
Visitors to Amanoiwato Shrine are captivated by its spiritual atmosphere and unique place in the mythological creation stories of Japan.
I booked a flight to Fukuoka at noon with Trip.com. Got the ticket really fast.
Takachiho in my memory
Takachiho Gorge is located on Kyushu Island, Japan. It's not difficult to get there, but renting a car is recommended. On a good weather day with calm waters, it's highly recommended to go boating. The atmosphere is fantastic, and the flowing somen noodles along the bamboo are delicious.

The highlight of boating at Takachiho Gorge is viewing the Manai Falls, which cascade down from a height of about 17 meters. Additionally, boating allows tourists to experience the beauty of nature filled with lush greenery and view the wave-like rock formations created by erosion.

Takachiho Gorge | A sight to behold.
【A masterpiece of impressionism in nature】Takachiho Gorge is a natural wonder hidden in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. This gorge, surrounded by rugged rocks and lush vegetation, has become a haven for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the world and seek tranquility in nature. In April, I set foot on this land. Although the water level in the gorge was high that day and I couldn't take a boat, the scenery in front of me was still intoxicating.
🌊Takachiho Gorge, with its unique geological structure, has numerous waterfalls and deep pools formed by the winding river flowing through the rocks. The vitality of spring and the sound of gurgling water complement each other, creating a vivid natural landscape. Standing on the viewing platform of the gorge, I feel like I am in an attractive impressionist painting.
🌊When I stood on the stone bridge of Takachiho Gorge, the surrounding scenery deeply attracted me. The rocks that have been weathered for millions of years have left deep marks under the carving of clear water flow. Every drop of water seems to be telling its own legend. This artwork created by nature itself forms a strong contrast with the hustle and bustle of the city.
🌊The sound of water is gurgling, and the roar of the waterfall is like a movement in the sky, which completely purifies the soul. The green trees are shaded, and the rocks covered with moss together build a perfect paradise. I strolled along the forest path, every step on the soft ground paved with fallen leaves, the air was filled with the fragrance of soil and life.
🌊On this trip, I did not choose to take a boat tour because the water level in the gorge was high that day. However, this did not diminish my experience, but gave me more time to enjoy this wild beauty. I strolled along the edge of the gorge, stopping at every viewing point, trying to capture the changing scenery with my camera.
🌊Standing next to the waterfall, feeling the coolness of the splashing water droplets, I seem to hear the voice of nature telling me that even though the world is changing, some beauty remains unchanged. Takachiho Gorge is not only a scenic spot, but also a journey, a spiritual exploration, and an opportunity to communicate with nature.
🌊This trip made me deeply realize that real travel should not be just a taste, but should have a deep exchange with the soul of a place. Takachiho Gorge, in its unique way, taught me how to listen to the voice of nature and how to find myself in tranquility. This is a trip that not only feasts the eyes, but also nourishes the soul. May my story inspire you to explore places that can bring peace to your soul.
Kunimigaoka: Sea of Clouds, Mythology, and Folklore - A Perfect Viewing Platform
Kunimigaoka is a famous tourist spot in Miyazaki Prefecture, known for its rich history and mythological tales. This hill, standing at an elevation of 513 meters, is located in the Takachiho Basin and is an excellent place to view the sea of clouds.
According to Japanese mythology, Kunimigaoka is closely associated with Takeiwatatsu-no-Mikoto, the grandson of Japan's first emperor. It is said that Takeiwatatsu-no-Mikoto once stood on this hill to survey the land he ruled over while on his way to govern the Kyushu region, hence the name 'Kunimigaoka,' which means 'Hill of National View.'
From the viewing platform on Kunimigaoka, visitors can take in the magnificent scenery of the Takachiho Basin. To the east lies the myth-filled town of Komachi, to the west is Mount Aso, Japan's largest active volcano, and to the north is Mount Sobo, the main peak of the Kyushu Mountains. Under the right weather conditions, especially from mid-September to late November, Kunimigaoka offers breathtaking views of the sea of clouds, making visitors feel as if they are floating in the sky.
In addition to its natural beauty, Kunimigaoka is closely linked to local folklore. During the autumn foliage season, people often sing the labor folk song 'Kari-kari-kiri,' which originated in the Takachiho area and reflects the hardships of rural life.
Another significant element of Kunimigaoka is the statue of Ninigi-no-Mikoto located in the center of the hill. According to local legends, Ninigi-no-Mikoto was the first deity to rule this world and once lost his way here. With the help of local residents, he finally reached his destination. The statue depicts this scene.
Overall, Kunimigaoka is not only a place of natural beauty but also an important site for Japanese mythology and cultural history. Whether it's the vast Takachiho Basin, the enchanting sea of clouds, or the rich traditional folklore, this place is worth exploring and experiencing in detail.

"Takachiho Gorge, a serene haven in Japan's Kyushu, stole my heart with its breathtaking beauty! The emerald green waters, sculpted rocks, and lush surroundings created a symphony of nature's splendor. Takachiho Gorge 📌 Miyazaki
Takachiho Gorge, nestled in the mountains of Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu Island, Japan, is a breathtaking natural wonder. On a rainy day, the gorge takes on an even more magical and ethereal quality. The rain enhances the lush greenery of the cliffs and the moss-covered rocks, creating a vivid contrast with the dark basalt walls formed by ancient lava flows.
The Gokase River, which meanders through the gorge, swells slightly with the rain, making the already impressive waterfalls, like the iconic Manai Falls, even more powerful and mesmerizing. The mist from the rain mingles with the spray from the falls, creating a dreamy, almost otherworldly atmosphere.
Walking along the paved paths that follow the gorge, visitors can enjoy the soothing sound of raindrops hitting the leaves and the river. The rain also tends to thin out the crowds, providing a more peaceful and solitary experience, perfect for reflection and taking in the serene beauty of the surroundings.
For those who choose to take a boat ride, the experience is equally enchanting. The rain patters on the surface of the river, creating ripples that add to the tranquility of the ride. Paddling through the gorge, with towering cliffs on either side and waterfalls cascading down, feels like entering a hidden, enchanted realm.
Despite the wet conditions, a rainy day in Takachiho Gorge offers a unique and unforgettable experience, highlighting the raw and untouched beauty of this natural sanctuary. Visitors should be prepared with rain gear and non-slip footwear to fully enjoy and safely explore this magical place.
Scenic Takachiho Gorge
A recent visit at Takachiho Gorge even though is after rain but the views is still beautiful. This gorge located in Miyazaki Prefecture and highly to put in your Kyushu itinerary. The gorge is formed by columnar jointing, the result of the rapid cooling of an ancient lava flow. The view of the gorge from a boat directly up the 17-meter Manai Falls is truly thrilling. However, due to high water after rain, all boat ride are cancelled. #takachihogorge

[Takachiho] A Healing Spot Brimming with Greenery and Negative Ions.
I always wanted to visit Takachiho!
The waterfalls flowing into the river, of course,
and the surrounding area is full of greenery and so beautiful that it was very healing!!
[Tourism Points]----------------------------------
○ During peak seasons, it is essential to reserve boat tickets in advance
→ Since I went during Golden Week, it was a complete reservation system. Tickets can be purchased online from 9 a.m. one week prior.
⭐︎ We wanted to get tickets for around 11 a.m., so we accessed the site from two iPhones and one PC about 10 minutes before the start. We kept refreshing the page 30 seconds before, and miraculously, only the PC managed to access and purchase the tickets. The two iPhones couldn't connect at all, and by the time they finally did at 9:10 a.m., almost all tickets were sold out. If you are going during a busy period, I definitely recommend accessing from a PC.
○ The morning is beautiful!
→ It's always beautiful, but especially in the morning when the light shines through, it looks very pretty. The best time to take a boat ride is in the morning!
○ The area around the boat dock is bustling with stalls, flowing noodles, souvenir shops, and trout fishing, offering many attractions, so it's good to plan for a longer sightseeing time.
○ The Tunnel Station, very close to Takachiho Gorge, was also a nice little detour! You can also sample sake aged in the tunnel.
[Caution]----------------------------------
○ You might get surprisingly wet.
→ Even if you don't go near the waterfall, you can get wet depending on the wind direction, and you can get splashed with water when rowing the boat. Also, for women, pants are recommended over skirts. My hem got wet because it touched the boat floor.
⭐︎ However, it feels like a mist, so you can feel the negative ions all over your body, and I think it's great, especially in the summer!

The walking trails around the gorge are well-maintained and offer fantastic views at every turn. It's a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers alike. I highly recommend visiting Takachiho Gorge for an unforgettable experience.
I wish to go to Hong Kong for my family trip as Hong Kong is paradise for food lovers, offering a wide variety of culinary delights. My family will enjoy it very much.
Takachiho Gorge
Takachiho Gorge, a place designated as a national scenic beauty and natural monument, leaves me in awe. Located where the lava from the ancient Aso volcano's eruptions flowed, it forms a spectacular columnar jointed cliff gorge along the Gokase River. The beauty of this place always allows one to feel the charm of nature.
Near Takachiho Gorge, there are many attractions that let visitors experience the origins of Japanese mythology. Notably, the 'Amano Iwato Shrine' and the annual 'Yokagura' festival evoke a sense of the sacred and the mysterious. Moreover, Takachiho Gorge presents different sceneries in each season, whether it be the cherry blossoms in spring, the verdure in summer, the red maple leaves in autumn, or the snowy landscape in winter, each is breathtaking.
When visiting Takachiho Gorge, I particularly love the magnificent view of the 'Manai Falls,' a waterfall that stands 17 meters tall and is truly awe-inspiring. Visitors can also take a rental boat to view the waterfall up close, or admire it from the pedestrian pathway above. At night, LED lights create a dreamy atmosphere around the waterfall.
Overall, Takachiho Gorge is a place filled with mystery and beautiful scenery, where every spot is worth exploring and appreciating. Whether you are looking for natural beauty or seeking a sense of mythological culture, this place will provide you with unforgettable memories.
Takachiho Shrine 🇯🇵
#cherryblossom2024
Takachiho Shrine was a spiritual haven on my spring journey! 🌸 Located in the picturesque town of Takachiho, Miyazaki, Japan, this historic shrine welcomed visitors with open arms and free admission, making it an accessible and budget-friendly attraction. As I entered the shrine's grounds, I was immediately struck by the tranquility and beauty of its surroundings. The entrance fee was free, which was a pleasant surprise and allowed me to fully immerse myself in the spiritual atmosphere without any cost. #SpiritualSeekers and #CulturalExplorers would find plenty to admire here. Nearby, Takachiho Gorge offered breathtaking views of the stunning ravine and the famous Manai Waterfall, perfect for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. After visiting the shrine, I indulged in some delicious local cuisine at a nearby restaurant, savoring the flavors of the region. Takachiho Shrine was a spiritual treasure that left me feeling spiritually enriched and connected to Japan's ancient traditions. 🍃⛩️
Takachiho Gorge's Delightful and Tasty Flowing Noodles
Located next to the first parking lot of Takachiho Gorge, 'Nagashi Somen Chiho-no-ie (House of Chiho) The Originator of Flowing Somen', is a great spot to enjoy a bowl after a boat ride or a visit, offering fun, a way to cool down, and a satisfying meal🥰
For each group of customers, the staff serves portions of noodles at intervals of five to ten seconds. The thin noodles are perfectly firm and soft, and when dipped into the sweet and salty dipping sauce, they slide smoothly down the throat.
You can choose a set meal that includes
🌟 A portion of thin noodles
🌟 Miso perilla rice ball, where the salty miso pairs well with the chewy rice
🌟 Salt-grilled fish, with a moderate level of saltiness and a sweet and salty taste of the fish meat
Kitakyushu | Tour Takachiho Gorge and view the Manai Falls
Located in Miyazaki, Kitakyushu, the Takachiho Gorge is the birthplace of the island nation's mythology. It is a place where many tour groups come, and to my surprise, there was even a traffic jam due to too many tour buses 🚌.
Takachiho Gorge was formed by the magma that erupted from the former Aso volcano, which flowed through the Gokase River and cooled and solidified.
The Manai Falls, spraying down from the cliffs, cascade beautifully, with the sunlight filtering through the leaves and the water droplets 💦 sparkling.
Visiting Takachiho Gorge: 🆓🎫
The trails in Takachiho are uneven, which is not very convenient for the elderly with mobility issues. Even for us, it was quite a breathless walk.
However, you can rent a boat to enjoy the gorge, but you need to make a reservation, and you can add time on-site.
Kitakyushu | Tourist Sightseeing Train - Takachiho Station
Takachiho Station🚉 is a short-line rail 🛤️ transport that allows you to tour back and forth 🔁 above Takachiho Gorge and enjoy the beautiful scenery within the gorge.
However, even if you don't take the tourist train, it's also quite nice to visit and play around the station.
The station building is still simple, a bit like a ticket booth in a park, where you can check the train schedule before buying a ticket.
The station sign is still rusty, and the waiting room is all wooden, giving a very 🈶 old-timey feel.
We walked along the track 🛤️ to the parking garage to see those little trains, all of which are operational. We happened to encounter a TV station filming there, and they even brought out a rather luxurious 🚂 just for the shoot.
The fields and trees on both sides of the platform, if you go now, should be full of cherry blossoms (I went at the end of last year).
Visiting Takachiho Station: 🆓🎫
Taking the tourist train: Ticket purchase required (see the last two pictures)
【A Must-Visit Waterfall Spot】Takachiho Gorge.
I visited the longed-for Takachiho Gorge.
After the pandemic, the number of buses from the airport had decreased, and we struggled a bit as we went without renting a car, but we managed to get there safely!
A typhoon had come a week before our visit, causing the water level to rise, so the boat service that gets close to the waterfall was suspended, and the bridge that allows access to the waterfall was destroyed, which was disappointing.
However, perhaps because of that, there were fewer tourists, and we were able to see the waterfall from various spots★
The same waterfall changed its expression completely depending on the angle, so I could watch it forever.
It was very fantastical, and staying at a nearby inn, I visited Takachiho Gorge first thing in the morning, which turned out to be a very pleasant and fantastical walk!
There was a shop nearby where you could enjoy nagashi somen, and although there weren't many dining options, there were a few.
Next time, I definitely want to take a boat and see it up close; it's a spot that makes me want to visit again★
