The most famous defense structure of La Roque is the La Roque Tower, also known as Grouville Bay No. 1, which is located on the coastline at the southern end of the bay and is one of eight defense structures along its length. Like many of the island's coastal towers, it was converted for defensive purposes by the Germans during their occupation of Jersey. Along with all of Jersey's other coastal towers and historic fortifications it is a listed building and one of Jersey's most important military history sites. La Roque Tower is one of 23 Conwy Towers built on Jersey between 1778 and 1801. The tower is of the standard Conway pattern, being rounded and tapered, and built of regularly squared and well-worked granite blocks, with some brick dressing. The upper floors are dotted with musket holes, and the first floor has a trimmed granite doorway. The parapet has four mechanical levels and a roof deck with masonry parapet.
