Below is a summary of my trip to Sri Lanka from February 16th to 27th, 2025. Why Sri Lanka? Visa-free entry was my top priority when choosing a travel destination after the pandemic, and Sri Lanka offered just that. Online reviews of Sri Lanka are polarized, with roughly half praising it and half finding it underwhelming. Years ago, an article titled "Chinese Tourists, You Look Stupid Being Fooled by Travel Guides" criticized the disparity between the reality of traveling in Sri Lanka and what's portrayed in guides. This intrigued me. I've traveled to both developed and developing countries, and I've never found a single one uninteresting! Given the divided opinions, I decided to carefully plan our Sri Lanka trip to ensure it was visually appealing, fun, delicious, and comfortable. In my opinion, Sri Lanka doesn't have top-tier natural scenery, world-class cultural attractions, or wildlife comparable to Africa. Its beaches, in terms of water quality, aren't even up to par. However, it's still just as enjoyable as any other country! As long as you know what kind of trip you want, traveling anywhere in the world can be fun. The Earth's mountains, rivers, lakes, bays, glaciers, grasslands, deserts, and animals are incredibly diverse, and human cultures vary immensely. With so much novelty and the unknown to explore, how can it not be fun if you have enough curiosity?! Sri Lanka is a classic example of "small but mighty." While it may not excel in any single area, its diverse offerings combine to create a rich and colorful travel experience. Of course, this depends on individual choices. When travel revolves around interests rather than just attractions, and you're flexible and willing to let go of certain sights or activities, even a country like Sri Lanka, which doesn't seem to stand out in any particular aspect, can be a fantastic place to explore. My interests: ancient ruins with a sense of history and beauty, beautiful accommodations immersed in nature, artistic spots (cafes, accommodations, attractions), and novel and fun activities (the more primitive, the better). My companion Lao Dong's interests: experiencing the vibrancy of local markets and enjoying Sri Lankan crabs and various seafood. My female companion's interests: enjoying high-quality and elegant services, including hotels, breakfasts, beautiful shops, and taking beautiful photos. Therefore, I chose the following: **Ancient ruins with a sense of history and beauty:** Yapahuwa Rock, Polonnaruwa Ancient City, and Sigiriya Rock, all World Heritage sites. The first two are, in my opinion, the most beautiful ancient sites in Sri Lanka, while the latter is a national symbol. **Beautiful accommodations immersed in nature:** Heritance Kandalama **Artistic spots:** luxury guesthouses and cafes in Ahangama, the Nine Arch Bridge in Ella, and the train journey along the coast from Colombo. **Novel and fun experiences and activities:** semi-outdoor accommodation at a banyan tree campsite, birdwatching on a lake safari, floating dinner on the lake and stargazing – a unique and primitive accommodation experience. We saw thirty or forty Sri Lankan elephants on safari at Hurulu Eco Park. I tried surfing for the first time in Ahangama and wore a sari for the first time at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. **Markets:** Negombo Fish Market and Galle Fish Market for buying crabs, prawns, and fish. **Food:** Crab curry at a famous restaurant in Colombo, seafood restaurants in Galle Fort, and cooking Chinese food with Sri Lankan crabs at our guesthouse. Thanks to the top-quality seafood, the food aspect of our Sri Lanka trip was satisfying. This trip also had its share of exciting stories. My companion drove a right-hand drive car for the first time and needed to adjust. On the second day, he bumped into a car's headlight and paid a small amount to settle the matter. On the fourth day, our parked car occupied a tuk-tuk's parking space, and our tires were deflated. Later, we met a super-friendly car repair shop owner who helped us realize it was a false alarm. On the last day, we had a minor collision with a tuk-tuk by the sea and, after some bargaining, paid a small amount to resolve the issue. Driving here requires the skills of a Chongqing taxi driver from the past to navigate the chaotic traffic. We arrived at a manor-like guesthouse on the first night in darkness, and it felt a bit eerie. However, the warm and attentive service from the housekeeper the next day completely changed our impression. This 180-degree turnaround is an experience I'll likely remember clearly even ten years from now. Sri Lankans aren't as innocent as they're sometimes portrayed, and some can even appear intimidating. I suspect this is due to the country's financial collapse and hardship during the pandemic. Poverty has led to an increase in scams targeting foreign tourists. But looking back, their wrongdoings were minor. The majority of the people in this country are friendly, smiling, and enjoy taking photos, leaving a lasting positive impression on me.

When I went around Sri Lanka, I found the best accommodation in the world! This time, I will introduce Iwami-so, a wonderful Japanese-run accommodation in Sigiriya! ⭐️Review I traveled around Sri Lanka for two weeks and stayed at seven accommodations, but this was the best. This may be the first time I have had such a satisfying stay at an overseas hotel (at this price range). This is a place that I would like people from all over the world to use, not just Japanese people. When I used it, the Japanese owner was not there, so the Sri Lankan owner, Nissanka, took care of me. He wiped my suitcase that was wet from the rain, made me hot tea, and welcomed me, and I was impressed by his hospitality. The room was larger than I expected, and I could see Sigiriya Rock from the balcony with a desk, chair, and hammock. Also, squirrels showed their faces on the balcony several times 🐿 The shower had a sci-fi shape that I had never seen before, but I was able to take a stable and very hot shower for the four nights I stayed there. Bath towels and face towels were provided, and both were clean. There was a refrigerator in the room, a large 1 liter bottle of water, two types of tea, and one type of instant coffee. It was possible to spend a nice tea time in the room. I was also happy to have a Japanese guidebook for Sri Lanka prepared in the room. And I would definitely recommend choosing the plan that includes breakfast. Every morning you can eat a Sri Lankan-style breakfast with plenty of fruit, luxurious fruit juice, appam, milk rice, and pancakes. The milk rice was like risotto and was delicious. If you have the opportunity, please try it. Dinner is charged, but you can have it at the rooftop restaurant on the 3rd floor. I stayed there for 2 days and ate fried rice and kottu, and the portions were quite large (I couldn't finish it) and the taste was good! In addition, a free dessert of your choice is included at dinner time. I was told that it was okay to pay all at once when I checked out. The hospitality of the owner, Nissanka, is top-notch. Not only did he provide free transportation to Sigiriya Rock, but he also took me to his recommended photo spots and took photos for me. In addition, after dinner, he turned off the lights to show us fireflies, and when we couldn't meet at check-out, he came all the way to the bus stop to say goodbye. The banana juice that Nissanka made for us after climbing Sigiriya Rock was the best I had in Sri Lanka! To be honest, I had a lot of unpleasant experiences in Sri Lanka, but this inn cleansed my heart. Nissanka's younger daughter and the other staff members are also very kind. In addition, you can rent a bicycle for free, so I had the valuable experience of riding it to Pidurangala and riding around in the forest. You can spend your time relaxing like I did, or you can ask the owner to arrange a tour for you. The charm of this inn is that you can spend your time in a way that suits you. The two sites are just 20 km apart so it is possible to visit both attractions within the same day. However, I recommend spending at least a few days to explore these sites at a more leisurely pace. Check out the three-day itinerary below! Day 1: Arrive at Colombo International Airport Ratmalana. Rest for a night in Negombo. Day 2: Travel to Sigiriya. Visit Dambulla Cave Temple on the way to Sigiriya. The most convenient way to reach Sigiriya is by hiring a private car. The cheapest way is by taking local buses. We took 2 different local buses from Negombo and got off at Dambulla. It was fun albeit slightly inconvenient as we got to experience it the local way. From Dambulla you can either take a public bus or hire a tuk-tuk to Sigiriya. Day 3: Visit Sigiriya Lion Rock early in the morning. Hire a jeep ride to Minneriya National Park in the afternoon. [Must-Visit Attractions] 1. Sigiriya Lion Rock: An ancient fortress built on top of a rock column 2. Dambulla Cave Temple: The largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in the island 3. Minneriya National Park: Within an hour drive from Sigiriya, the park houses hundreds of Asian elephants which thrive on the Minneriya Tank. Sigiriya is the MOST iconic and beautiful site in the country of Sri Lanka! It represents the intricacies of the Sinhalese history and it dated back to thousands of years ago! For travelers, getting there is fairly easy! Getting There - Take the bus from Kandy or Colombo to Dambulla. From Dambulla you could take a 20 minute tuktuk to Sigiriya or take a bus which would roughly take 45 minutes. Most accommodations are very close to Sigiriya and are at walkable distance! Attractions - Pirundagala is a good viewpoint rock while Sigiriya Archeological site allows you to be exploring the history on the rock! Hotels - Senehas Homestay was very hospitable and of good value! Food & Restaurants - make sure you try string hoppers in the area! The area is full of touristy restaurants with cuisine ranging from international, italian to local Sri Lankan delicacies!

We had a wonderful stay in Hotel Sigiriya during our visit to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the most iconic landmark in Sri Lanka. The hotel is 2 km away from the entrance of Sigiriya Rock, which is also known as the Lion Rock. We were welcomed with amazing views of the Lion Rock the moment we set foot in the hotel. The rock could be seen clearly from the outdoor pool area and we could even see the visitors on the rock using the telescope provided! Our hotel room was clean and spacious. There were French doors leading to patio with sitting areas. Our stay included buffet dinner served in the open-aired restaurant in the hotel. The hotel was very accommodative to our request to provide takeaway breakfast as we needed to leave before breakfast time to climb the Lion Rock. Sigiriya Rock stands tall in the jungle of central Sri Lanka. It is a mysterious ruin that has been buried in the jungle for about 1,400 years. It is hard to imagine that there was a castle on this rock. Our guide told us that there was a castle on top of the rock, and another castle below, and that the king never walked there. I recommend that you wear comfortable shoes. Photographing the smiling angel painted on the wall was prohibited. Sri Lanka's Sky Palace was listed as a World Heritage Site as early as 1982. Looking from the bottom up, it feels very spectacular. After actually climbing to the top, I have to admire the uncanny workmanship designed by the people at that time. yeay!! im so close to this huge-mammoth-gigantic rock that i’ve been eyeing since i saw a video clip of Duran Duran. it’s just amazing to witness human imagination harmonizes with the nature (the rock was formed from magma of an extinct volcano & reaches 200m high. when King Kashyapa transfomed this rock into his palace, fortress, garden & ultimately his administrative capital during his reign (477 – 495 AD), it has becoming a magnificent legacy during his time i am still amazed when i picture themassive construction of the city on top of the rock. how do these people drag all the building materials to the top? it must be hard time and tiring. #sigiriya #lionrock #srilanka

As someone who lives in a bustling city, there's no better escape than to somewhere as full of nature as Sigiriya, Sri Lanka. Head back down and it’s an easy motorbike ride around town to find some relaxing shade. Then, it’s back up up to climb the Sigiriya peak and watch the sunset. Just watch out for those pesky monkeys as they like to steal your stuff. 10/10 would do again.
