Astra Museum Of Traditional Folk Civilisation 🗺️
#folkactivities
I just had the most incredible experience visiting the ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization in Sibiu, Romania! 🌍 If you’re into history, culture, or just enjoy being outdoors, this place is a must-see. The museum is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe, and it’s like stepping back in time to explore Romania’s rural past.
The entrance fee was around 25 RON (€5), which is a steal considering how much there is to see. The museum covers over 200 hectares, so be prepared to do a lot of walking. 🚶♂️ You’ll find traditional wooden houses, watermills, and even churches, all preserved to showcase different regions and periods of Romanian history. Each exhibit is so detailed, I felt like I was walking through a real village. The interactive displays and live demonstrations, like blacksmithing and weaving, really bring the past to life.
What’s great is that the museum is located in the Dumbrava Sibiului Natural Park, so the scenery is just as beautiful as the exhibits. 🌳 I spent a good few hours wandering around, and it’s easy to lose track of time here. If you’re visiting with kids, they’ll love the boat rides on the lake in the middle of the park.
Nearby, you can also visit Sibiu’s historic city center, which is just a short drive away. After spending the day at the museum, I’d recommend heading back into town for a coffee in one of the cozy cafes in Piața Mare.
Whether you’re a history buff or just looking for a peaceful day out in nature, ASTRA Museum is definitely worth the visit. I can’t recommend it enough! 👍

The beautiful city of Sibiu 🔆
#photolocation
My trip to Sibiu, Romania, was a delightful experience full of charm and history! 🏰 This picturesque city, nestled in Transylvania, is a real gem. I started my visit in the Old Town, where the colorful buildings and cobblestone streets set a fairytale scene. The entrance to the Brukenthal National Museum, located in a stunning baroque palace, was around 15 RON, and it was well worth it for the impressive art collection and historical exhibits. 🎨
I also wandered around the Great Square (Piața Mare), which was lively and filled with cafes and shops. The Council Tower provided a fantastic view of the city—climbing up was a bit of a workout but absolutely rewarding! 🏛️ I took a leisurely stroll along the Bridge of Lies, a charming spot with local legends and a perfect photo op.
Nearby, the Astra Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization was another highlight. The entrance fee was about 20 RON, and the open-air museum showcased traditional Romanian village life with authentic houses and crafts. 🏡
Sibiu’s blend of medieval architecture, vibrant culture, and scenic beauty made it a memorable stop. Whether you're into history, architecture, or just soaking in the local atmosphere, Sibiu has something for everyone. 🌟 #trip #Sibiu #Transylvania #BrukenthalMuseum #PiațaMare #AstraMuseum

Romania travel recommendations.
Balkans 10-country tour - small town church tour|||Compared to the Balkans 10-country tour, Romania has the most time and attractions. Indeed, this country is fascinating, with an elegant atmosphere in both cities and villages. The scenery from Bucharest to the Carpathian Mountains is also breathtaking.
Today, we visited two ancient towns in Romania - Sighisoara and Sibiu, with Sighisoara being a World Cultural Heritage site. The two ancient towns have many churches, mostly Orthodox, with ancient churches in the city having a rich history and culture, and the church bell towers forming a beautiful city skyline.
The Evangelical Cathedral in Sibiu (4) is the most famous Gothic church in Sibiu, built between 1320 and 1520, with a spire over 73 meters high, the tallest building in the city. We climbed up to overlook the city, and the view was worth it! Inside the church is a large mural (5) painted by Johannes Rosno in 1445, marking the transition from late Gothic to Renaissance painting.
Trip to Sibiu 🇷🇴
It was a short trip to Sibiu, Romania.
We started our trip in Sibiu with a visit to Piața Mare (Large Square), the vibrant center of the city. It's a great spot to soak up the local atmosphere and admire the stunning Baroque architecture surrounding the square. We recommend exploring some of the historic buildings, such as the Roman Catholic Church and the Brukenthal Palace. We take our time wandering around and enjoying the lively street performers and small markets that often pop up here.
📍Piața Mare, Sibiu 550163, Romania*
From there, we headed to the Council Tower. Climbing to the top of the tower was a must-do for us. The panoramic view of the city from above is breathtaking, and we took plenty of photos to capture the moment 📸 The tower's interior also offers an interesting display of Sibiu's history, making it both a scenic and educational stop.
📍Piața Mică 1, Sibiu 550182, Romania
After lunch, we walked to the Passage of Stairs (Pasajul Scărilor), a charming medieval stairway that connects the Upper Town to the Lower Town. We loved wandering through this picturesque passageway, surrounded by old brick walls and ivy-covered houses. It’s the perfect spot for a quiet stroll or some great photo opportunities.
📍Strada Turnului, Sibiu 550197, Romania
In the evening, we had dinner at La Cuptor, known for its welcoming ambiance and delicious Romanian cuisine. The roast lamb and polenta were highlights, and we were impressed by the extensive wine list featuring local Romanian wines 🍷
💰 35 to 70 RON ($8-$17 USD).
📍Strada Arhivelor 2, Sibiu 550164, Romania*
Then, we started our second day with a visit to the ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization, an incredible open-air museum located just a short drive from the city center. We spent the morning exploring the vast collection of traditional Romanian houses, windmills, and wooden churches. It’s a great way to learn about Romania’s rural heritage, and we enjoyed the peaceful, natural surroundings of the Dumbrava Forest 🌳
📍 Pădurea Dumbrava, Sibiu 550399, Romania
After a morning of exploring, we had lunch at Café Einstein, located back in the city center. The café is known for its relaxed vibe and tasty dishes. We tried the fresh salads and pasta 🍝 but they also have a variety of local dishes if you’re in the mood for something more traditional.
💰 25 and 50 RON
📍Strada Nicolae Bălcescu 21, Sibiu 550159, Romania*
Lastly, we visited the Holy Trinity Cathedral, an impressive Orthodox church with beautiful frescoes and a stunning interior. We would recommend spending some quiet time here, admiring the art and architecture. It’s a peaceful escape from the bustling city streets.

City of a Thousand Eyes—Sibiu
145 kilometers west of Brașov lies a beautiful ancient city, which was named the European Capital of Culture in 2007. Here, you can see medieval city walls, battlements, moats, drawbridges, gatehouses, bastions, Baroque and Gothic architecture. This is Sibiu, an ancient city in Romania known as the 'Open-Air Museum'. The houses in Sibiu have distinctive shapes and are highly recognizable. The roofs are almost all orange-red, the walls are colorful, and the attic windows on the slopes resemble human eyes. Especially the tiles at the top of the windows arch upwards, resembling curved upper eyelids, with the windows looking like pupils. Curiously, almost all houses are like this, giving rise to the names 'Eyes of Sibiu' and 'City of a Thousand Eyes'.
Sibiu is located at the foot of the Southern Carpathians, in the central region of Transylvania. It was built by German immigrants in the 12th century and was historically known as Cibinium. It is one of the seven famous ancient cities in Romania.
In 1241, the city was destroyed by fire due to multiple invasions by the Tatars. However, due to the developed local handicrafts and commerce, the city soon restored its original appearance. In the 14th century, to prevent invasions by the Ottomans, a fortress was built around the city. By the 16th century, Sibiu had become an important center for handicrafts and trade in the region. In 1530, the first printing house in Transylvania was established here, and in 1544, the first Romanian book 'Luther's Proverbs' was published here. From 1703 to 1791 and from 1849 to 1867, it twice served as the capital of the Grand Principality of Transylvania.
The long history has left many historical sites, and the medieval city walls and Baroque and Gothic old buildings give the city an ancient charm. Sibiu has a long history, is small and exquisite, and has a strong ancient atmosphere. It needs to be slowly toured and experienced with heart. The old city is divided into upper and lower districts due to the terrain, separated by the Bridge of Lies. The upper district has the Large Square, the Small Square, and Huet Square, where famous historical buildings are located. The lower district is where ordinary people live, full of local life and relatively quiet.
Republic Square: Known as the 'Large Square' by the people of Sibiu, it is in the city center and is rectangular in shape. Almost all important events in the city's history are related to this square. The houses around the square are all Gothic buildings, each with a very distinctive large door. The styles of the doors are absolutely different, with semicircular facades, and the doorposts and lintels are carved with various patterns. Some lintels are also engraved with unique emblems, which are the 'family crests' carved by prominent families in the Middle Ages. All buildings are well preserved, with the most representative being the Brukenthal Palace on one side of the square.
March 6th Square: Known as the 'Small Square' by the people of Sibiu, it is relatively small compared to Republic Square. The houses around the square are well-preserved ancient buildings. All houses have different styles, with no two buildings looking the same. Even the colors on the walls are varied, giving a very unique feeling. Surprisingly, the buildings now used as shops try to preserve the original items left from the past to attract customers. Visitors are never tired of looking and are reluctant to leave. The most attractive feature is the 'Ferenghi Stairs'. A winding stone staircase leads up to the Old Fortress Street and down to the 'Council Tower'. Climbing the stairs, the ancient cityscape of Sibiu is fully revealed. Modern transportation tools are completely unusable here, as the stairs are the main passage, with many alleys connected to it, forming a deep and quiet labyrinth. Those unfamiliar with the situation may feel like they have entered a 'Bagua Formation'. Near the square is an iron bridge built in 1859, the earliest iron bridge in Romania. The iron railings on both sides of the bridge are cast with circular patterns. Locals jokingly call this bridge the 'Bridge of Lies'. Why this ancient and artistically unique bridge has such an unflattering name remains unknown.
Located between the two squares is a bastion built in the 16th century, used as a fortress to defend against foreign enemies. It looks like a pagoda, with a round helmet on top. It is named after its proximity to the Parliament House. In the early 16th century, to resist foreign invasions, various craftsmen in the area funded the construction of walls and fortresses for self-defense, resulting in a series of fortresses such as the 'Weavers' Bastion', 'Blacksmiths' Bastion', 'Masons' Bastion', and 'Red Bastion'. Later, walls were built to connect these fortresses, forming a circle within which people could move freely. The existing city walls were built in the late 16th century and are the third line of defense of the ancient fortress group.
Sibiu has well-preserved churches, including the Evangelical Church built in the 14th-15th centuries, a Gothic building, and the Eastern Orthodox Cathedral built in 1850 in a Byzantine style. They are magnificent in appearance and have exquisite interior murals, making them well worth a visit.

The Liars' Bridge in Sibiu
👍️Recommended reason:
Sibiu is located in the southern part of Transylvania, Romania, spanning the Cibin River, a tributary of the Olt River, and is the capital of Sibiu County. The city is one of the most prosperous in Romania and has attracted the most foreign investment in the country. It has also been voted as 'one of the eight most suitable pastoral cities to live in Europe'.
In 1989, a revolution broke out in Romania, and Sibiu became the second city in the country to ignite the revolution.
✅Must experience:
1. Liars' Bridge: Next to Sibiu Square, there is a famous iron bridge called the 'Liars' Bridge', built in 1859, and it is the first iron bridge in Romania. Legend has it that if someone lies while standing on this bridge, it will collapse. The name originates from the fact that either merchants often quarrel on this bridge, or lovers make promises but break up immediately (everyone is lying). Standing on the Liars' Bridge, one can see the Council Tower and the small square.
2. Lutheran Cathedral of Saint Mary: The church is the most famous Gothic church in Sibiu, a traditional religious and political center in the Transylvania region of Romania, located in HUET Square. Its majestic spire, 73.34 meters high, is the tallest building in the city. The entirely wooden church allows visitors to climb to the top for a panoramic view of the old town and to listen to organ performances inside.
3. Brukenthal Museum: It is the oldest museum in Romania, opened in 1871, with a rich and diverse collection.
🏨Accommodation strategy:

💗Other tips:
We arrived in the afternoon, the square was very lively with many tourists, and all the attractions were within walking distance, making for a very pleasant stroll.
We must earn our place in this crowded world

Travel around the world slowly | Tike this eye-filled mediaeval town in London the year before last.
National Geographic is full of curiosity about the "city of thousands of eyes" Sibiu.
This year, I took the international train from Budapest to Sibiu, Romania, and saw the mediaeval ancient city designed and built by the Germans with my own eyes.
There are 200 households in the ancient city, and the windows of each house are like "Eye 99" standing on the roof of the bell tower in the main square of the city overlooking the whole city.
It seems that there are more than a thousand pairs of eyes looking at you, which is more interesting.

Croatia→Transylvania Vampire Diary
Hey, have you seen the rural videos of Transylvania, Romania, the vampire town circulating on the Internet? The muddy dirt road, the worn-out toilets, the old farmers squatting and smoking, it's just like our rural areas decades ago. Where is the promised European town like the green leaf fairy tale? The remote and mysterious Transylvania region occupies nearly half of Romania's territory. In Latin, it means a place farther than the forest. If you want to feel how vast it is, the key is whether you can find the right place. In the Middle Ages, the Saxons from Germany built exquisite mountain cities here. The name of Transylvania in German, cn burin, means seven towns, and Sibiu, which was once elected as the European Capital of Culture, is the most famous of these seven towns. As one of the most important and oldest cities in Transylvania, Sibiu is particularly meaningful. Romania's first school, first library, first bank, and first pharmacy were all born here. The main city is divided into upper and lower districts according to the terrain. It is said that at its most glorious time, the ancient city wall surrounding the city once had four city gates, five artillery towers, and 39 towers. The upper city is mainly composed of the large square, the small square, and the Xiu Te square. Since the 15th century, the famous large square has been the core of the city, and the surrounding buildings are magnificent. The Baroque city's Brukenthal Palace used to be the official residence of the capital of Transylvania, and today it has become a museum. The 73-meter-high Council Tower has been a city landmark since it was built in 1588. It was used to store grain and water in case of fire. Passing through the Council Tower and the small square, you can come to the front of the Evangelical Cathedral in Xiu Te Square with five spires. This magnificent Gothic cathedral took more than 200 years to complete. The Passion of Christ mural in the church is very famous. The huge pipe organ is the king of Romanian pipe organs, with a total of 6002 causal pipe organs. Behind it, you can find the tomb of Prince Mihna who was murdered in front of the church in 1510. This prince, nicknamed the Bad Guy, is the son of Count Dracula, the prototype of the vampire. In the clearly divided Sibiu, the upper city is mainly a commercial area and the mansions of the rich, while the lower city is full of cobblestone old streets and colorful houses of the common people. Connecting the upper and lower cities is the famous Bridge of Lies next to the small square. The Bridge of Lies, built in 1859, is the first iron bridge in Romania. The reason for this interesting name is said to be because a girl was deceived by a scumbag and committed suicide by jumping into the river from the bridge. Over time, a saying has been circulated locally that if a couple stands on the bridge and lies to each other, the iron bridge will collapse. Another saying is that as the busiest place in the city, the crowd on the Bridge of Lies is either swearing to be together forever, but will break up in a blink of an eye, or cunning merchants who make profits by deceiving customers. Anyway, everyone has nothing to say. But since the curse that the bridge will collapse when lying, the merchants have become honest, and gradually, the merchants in Sibiu have also become known for their integrity. Although they all sound like unreliable legends, Sibiu is indeed a city that is particularly sensitive to lies. Standing on the Bridge of Lies and looking around, it is not difficult to find the largest architectural feature in the old city, the Eye of Sibiu. These eyes are actually skylights built by local people on the roof with tiles to dry food in the past, but because of their unique shape, they are slowly depicted as being specifically used to monitor liars and can peek into their inner secrets. So if you have a ghost in your heart, it's better to detour and don't come to Qibing House, otherwise you will always have to bear the pain of being monitored, who can bear it.

Returned from a day at the splendid Sibiu Zoological Garden, and what an enjoyable time it was! In Sibiu, Romania was located the entry fee for adults around 15 RON or about $4. Second, they also provide children’s discount that is perfect for families. The zoo is located deep within the beautiful Dumbrava forest, which offers a tranquil atmosphere to visitors. These animal enclosures are well-kept and there is a wide variety of species to be seen varying from magnificent big cats, beautiful birds down to playful primates. Animals interactive – visitors can even feed in some of the animals who were under supervision by zookeeper was one highlight and unique experience. They also offer a pleasant café where you can get something to snack on or take an energizing beverage. The nearby attractions are the ASTRA National Museum Complex to experience Romanian culture and Old Town, which is a medieval old town with cobblestone streets and historical architecture. In general, the Sibiu Zoological Garden provides a pleasant family day trip or an entertaining excursion for animal lovers. #SibiuZoologicalGarden #FamilyFun #WildlifeAdventure 🐾🌳
