By taking a Shogawa Gorge cruise in Toyama-ken, you will get a great experience of the four seasons. While it is widely believed that winter is the most beautiful season in Shogawa, it actually has great scenery all year round. "Ohmaki onsen" is considered the "last secret area of the Japanese archipelago". This is why the creators of Japanese detective television series favor this shooting location.

Toyama 🇯🇵 Photographic Record|Etsu China Station × Male Rock × Seaview Train 🚃
This extended solo trip to Toyama was all about capturing a single image—a train crossing the coast, with Onagawa Rock and Toyama Bay juxtaposed, as tranquil as a painting.
After leading the photography tour, I stayed in Toyama for four days and three nights.
Many people know the "Ame-sun Coast" as a classic location for photographing the Himi Line.
But after checking out a Japanese photographer's posts, I discovered that the station just before Ame-sun Station, "Etsu-chūgoku Branch Station," is actually even quieter, cleaner, and even more surprising.
Standing on the platform, waiting for the train to turn from the bay,
the light was perfect, the sea breeze was quiet, and the Tateyama Mountain Range and Onagawa Rock stood silently in the background.
The moment I clicked the shutter, I knew it was worth it.
The trip also had its share of hiccups: although I was originally traveling solo, I ran into familiar faces along the way—members of the photography tour were also there to take photos.
And at Ame-sun Coast, I happened to meet a photographer driving from Tokyo. He said he had been there ten times, but this was the first time he had seen the Tateyama Mountains so clearly.
This article documents my journey and photography experience.
If you enjoy quiet photography trips or want to create a classic Hokuriku photo for yourself, I recommend this article.

Venice of Japan: Shinminato Uchikawa Canal
Shinminato Uchikawa in Imizu City, Toyama Prefecture, is often referred to as the "Venice of Japan." During the Edo and Meiji periods, this area thrived as a key transit port for merchant ships navigating the Sea of Japan.
The Uchikawa Canal, stretching approximately 3.5 kilometers, serves as an important waterway extending inland from Toyama Bay. Even today, rows of fishing boats can be seen moored along both sides of the canal. On the banks, you'll find old warehouses and residences of former Kitamaebune shipowners, creating a charmingly nostalgic streetscape. While the canal is stunning at dusk and nighttime, daytime offers a breathtaking view from the Naru-no-Ura Bridge, where you can see the Shinminato Bridge in the foreground and the majestic Tateyama Mountain Range in the background. For an even more immersive experience, you can don a kimono 👘 and stroll along the canal, crossing over its 10+ bridges to soak in the retro port-town atmosphere.
🚗: About an 8-minute walk from Manyo Line Shinmachiguchi Station.
[Toyama/Uozu] Gourmet Indian Curry Uozu store
#AbsolutelyFreeTrip
I went to "Indian Curry Uozu Branch" in Uozu, Toyama. The Beatles were playing in the cozy Showa retro coffee shop-style interior, and I quickly ordered from the ticket machine. If you add the jumbo cutlet topping to the classic "Yasai Tamago Curry", the cabbage, soft-boiled egg, and crispy cutlet in the runny roux make a wonderful collaboration! The curry has a gentle taste, and some say it is of a high level as a B-grade gourmet. The price is 700 yen + toppings, so it's great value for money. The self-service fukujinzuke and soup are also a delight, and it's easy to see why it's loved by local customers. A cup that fills your heart and stomach in a retro space. It's a restaurant I'd like to visit again!

💞Reasons for recommendation
Great location in front of the station!
No matter what you order, the food is delicious. The meat is cooked to perfection, and the oysters are incredibly soft inside. The food is quick and the price is not too high. This is an izakaya that you should definitely visit if you visit Toyama.
Reservations are required! Phone orders only. You may not be able to get through, so try to call after 10pm on weekdays. It's rare to just drop in and be able to get in.
The Natural Beauty of Japan's Mountains: Etchu-Toyama [Inotani Station]
As the train slowly pulled into Inotani Station, I felt as though I had stepped into a serene mountain landscape painting. This small station, located at the border of Toyama Prefecture and Gifu Prefecture, is surrounded by layers of green mountains and river valleys, making it one of the most nature-immersed hidden gems along the Takayama Main Line.
Upon disembarking, only the sounds of birdsong and flowing streams accompany you. Not far from the station lies the crystal-clear Jinzū River. Walking along the trails, you can see pristine forests and ancient iron bridges, a favorite spot for hikers and photography enthusiasts. In autumn, the mountains are ablaze with red maple leaves, while in winter, they are blanketed in snow—offering poetic and picturesque scenery throughout the seasons.
For me, Inotani Station is not just a transportation hub but an entryway to experiencing the breath of the mountain forest.

I visited on a solo trip, and the view of the water discharge and the Tateyama mountain range from the observation deck took my breath away.
You can sometimes see a rainbow over the water discharge, making it a perfect place for couples to take commemorative photos 📸💑
There are multiple viewing spots, such as the water discharge viewing stage and rainbow terrace, so you can experience different impressions no matter where you look.
This place, where nature and human technology are woven together, is a travel destination that makes you think, "I'm glad I went."
You can enjoy the view and walks for free, so it's also recommended as an "absolutely free trip."

A spectacular journey through the sky 🚡 A mountain experience that lets you feel the four seasons on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, which connects Toyama and Nagano, is a mountain sightseeing route where you can enjoy spectacular views and nature while traveling an elevation difference of about 2,000m.
You can't miss the Snow Valley in spring, the alpine plants in summer, the autumn leaves in autumn, and the powerful water discharge from Kurobe Dam 🌿🍁❄️
I visited on a solo trip, but I was moved by the feeling of walking on clouds at Murododaira.
The journey, which involves changing cable cars and ropeways, is like an adventure, and is perfect for making memories with your partner 💑
Since it is a through route, it is also possible to travel from the Toyama side to the Nagano side.
This journey, where you can become one with nature, was a special time that made me forget my daily life.
Some sections have views and walks that you can enjoy for free, so it is also recommended as an "absolutely free trip."

A Tranquil Energy Spot in the City Center: Toyama Hie Shrine
Located in the heart of Toyama City, Hie Shrine is an ancient shrine with a history spanning over a thousand years. Dedicated to Sarutahiko-no-Mikoto, it is revered as a guardian deity for good fortune, warding off misfortune, and ensuring career success. Just a ten-minute walk from Toyama Castle, this serene corner surrounded by lush greenery offers a peaceful retreat.
During my visit, I happened to encounter a crowd of worshippers. The stone steps and vermilion torii gates of the shrine looked particularly majestic under the sunlight.
Every May, the "Sanno Festival" is one of Toyama's most significant traditional events, bustling with activity and showcasing the charm of local culture. If you find yourself in Toyama, take a moment to step into this city shrine and experience the quiet strength unique to the Hokuriku region.
📍 Location Check-in: Hie Shrine (Toyama Sanno Town)
Address: 4-12 Sanno-machi, Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture
🌊🚉【Toyama - Roadside Station Amaharashi】
Can you really enjoy this breathtaking view for free?
From the train window, you can see the stunning blue sea.
"Wow, Toyama is this beautiful," I couldn't help but exclaim.
Just ahead lies Roadside Station Amaharashi! This is the only place where you can see the Tateyama Mountain Range across the sea. Under the right conditions, the sparkling sea and snow-capped mountains align like a picturesque painting.
From the observation deck on the second floor, as you gaze at this scenery, you might think, "A trip just to come here would be worth it."
Inside the facility, there’s a café, a tourist information center, and a gallery showcasing works by local artists. And yet, admission is free—almost unbelievable.
This is a scenic spot worth stopping by during your journey.
