#travellerwonderland The Stone Forest (Shilin) in Kunming, Yunnan Province, is famous for its collection of limestone formations that resemble petrified trees of stone, as recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The formations, which cover around 500 square kilometers, were shaped over millions of years by wind and water erosion, resulting in intricate towers, spires, and caves. The place is huge, there are so many places to see within this stone forest and lots of hidden places that is so beautiful and fascinating. The park itself is divided into several scenic views and sections. I spent a full day here, I saw the most important sites, and I skipped several spots as I needed to catch the shuttle bus and high-speed train back to Kunming City. Inside this store park, there are so many clear signs, directions, and history of the park. My advice is to keep looking out for the signage and make sure you are following the right path, as some may lead you back to your original spot. Some major sections are the main areas where visitors can explore towering rock formations, some sections are remote sections with older formations, this area is quieter and less crowded. The rock formation is impressive, some sections feature underground caves and rivers, and also lakes surrounded by the stone pillars, offering a peaceful atmosphere. The local Sani people, a branch of the Yi ethnic minority, have lived in the area for centuries. They have rich traditions and legends, many connected to the Stone Forest. Visitors can see the local dance performance, which is very cheerful and lively. One famous legend is that of Ashima, a Sani girl who was turned into a stone after escaping forced marriage, and her figure can be seen in one of the rock formations. . #yunnan #kunming #stoneforest

#myhiddengems I’ve been to forests, jungles, tropical rainforests and then I found out about this place, a stone forest! It’s a big park filled with natural stone formations that makes one wonder about the history, how it was formed as there aren’t any caves or oceans nearby. It’s listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is located a short drive outside of Kunming city and a have to visit for young and old if you’re in the area! Stone Forest, The Wonder under the Heaven

Stone Forest, is known for its spectacular pinnacle karst topography with tree-like rocks rising up from the ground. Listed as Word Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2007. The scenic spot covers an area of 350sq.km. Stone Forest can be divided into eight districts, and at present, open tour districts are Stone Forest Scenic Area, Naigu Stone Forest Scenic Area, Feilong Waterfall Forest Scenic Area and Chang Lake Forest Scenic Area. Among them, Stone Forest Scenic Area is core area of the whole scenic spot, and most famous attractions are located here, including Major Stone Forest, Minor Stone Forest, Bushao Hill, Lizi Yuanqing, and Eternal Mushroom. There is a Romantic Legend to it, as the legend goes, Ashima, a beautiful girl of the Sani people (a branch of the Yi) was kidnapped by an evil landlord's son and forced into marriage. Her lover, Ahei, made every effort to save her. However on the way home, Ashima was swept away by a flood and turned into what is known as the Ashima Rock. A day at karst caves and stone forest

I went on a one day tour to Jiuxiang karst caves and Shilin (the stone forest) near Kunming. Although the tour was in Chinese and I didn't understand the explanations directly, the advantage of being part of a group were not worrying about how to get there and back to Kunming, and a lower trip cost in total. The main disadvantage other than the language was not being able to manage the time I spent in each place. The karst caves were very nice, especially the pillars that look like melting candles, and the underground river. The stone forest park is very big, and the time we had was limited. I recommend going first to the peak view pavilion, to appreciate the massive stone pillars from above, then explore the rest of the park. #kunming,#shilin,#karst,#jiuxiang

A wonderful natural wonderscape a short train ride from Kunming Yunnan. This truly is a geological marvel that you will leave you gasping in wonder. The rocks are reminiscent of petrified trees which is where the name Stone Forest comes from. Aptly named indeed. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a 5AAAAA rated site. A summer in Yunnan - Kunming

Exploring Yunnan? Wondering what's worth visiting in Kunming? Visit the Stone Forest park. It's best to visit in the summer when the weather is more comfortable. It's about a 2 hour drive from the Kunming train station. A taxi will cost around 2-250RMB or you can catch a train followed by a bus. (around 3.5 hours, use A-Maps) Things to note: It's best to take your own food and drinks along. Wear comfortable clothes. Take your passport in case needed when buying tickets.

The travel agent gave us some recommendations and we settled on Yunnan China. We were very thrilled with our selection on Yunnan China. It is a place of many beautiful sceneries. Stone Forest (also known as Shilin) is one of them. Stone Forest is a set of limestone formations located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Yunnan Province. It has an area of 500 km². Labyrinthian Stone Forest in Shilin

Shilin Stone Forest was one of the most spectacular places i have visited in China. The park has a few different stops including a geological museum, a major and minor stone forest, and several viewpoints and flower gardens. The major stone forest is quite a long walk through the maze like paths around the large stones, at some points there are valleys that go down 20m and back up, there are some stone formations that look like birds or the "1000 year old tortoise", and there are several ponds of water you can walk over. At some points the paths are quite narrow through the rocks or you have to duck down to avoid hitting your head. It was very cool throughout as the stones seem to dissipate the heat and protect you from the sun. Expect to be walking for at least 30 minutes if you want to see all of the paths, try not to get lost! #passionpassport

Shilin Park

Shilin Park is a famous attraction near Kunmin, the capital of Yunnan Province. It is famous for its extraordinary karst topography. There are bus directly from Kunmin City to the park. The park is very large and there are shuttles in the park, which is included in the park fare. The park is just composed of stones and many areas are not very easy to climb. But it is worth it to climb into deeper in the park. It would be much quieter and have less tourists if you hike deep into the park. Remember to have a map since you will easily lose inside the park. Yunnan is a place where there are lots of rains in summer. Be prepared for the possible rain.

The Stone Forest is a magnificent and unique natural scenery This places are the tourist attraction for both overseas and domestic tourists which was classified as AAAA+ for the tourists sightseeing in in China and It has been Unesco World heritage site as part of South China. Less known, but one of the most authentic and breathtaking places I have ever visited in my life. It is the Stone Forest (Kunming Stone Forest, Shilin in Chinese), a spectacular set of limestone groups and representative of the karst landscape of southern China. Known since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) as the "first wonder of the world", it is one of the most important attractions in Yunnan. You can get there by a bus available from Kunming city, since this attraction is located in a bordering county. It was so fun to get lost in those rocky labyrinths, among which you meet the women and men of the Yi ethnic minority with their colorful clothes and musical art. The wonders of Yunnan- Stone Forest, Kunming

The Stone Forest is a bucketlist item when visiting Kunming. It is located around 80km from the city and can be reached via a 1.5 hour coach bus ride, or a 40 minute bullet train ride, followed by a local bus or taxi to the park. The park is very big and there is so much to see. There are golf carts driving around inside the park, that can take you to the main scenic areas. It comes at a small extra fee. Inside the park, you will be amazed by the beautiful karst rock towers, valleys, caves and lakes. The karst rock towers literaly form a stone forrest. It is spectacular. There are plenty of small mountain spots where you can view the stone forrests from above. Kunming Stone Forest

Getting There - We started from Kunming South Railway Station. 18 minute train journey from there to Shilin West Station followed by a 1 hour bus journey to the stone forest. You see the buses immediately upon exiting the train station. Attractions - Major stone forest and minor stone forest. The major stone forest can get crowded. I would advise to go to some of the other scenic areas as there are few people and some amazing views. Hotels - There are hotels at the forest or you can choose to stay in Kunming city or Kunming South Railway Station. We stayed close to the south station but I would recommend staying in the city instead as there will be more to do. Food & Restaurants - There are some stalls inside the park and, especially at the major forest area but mostly just snacks. Lizijingshilin, which is the major area in Shi Lin Stone Forest scenic Spot, Kunming City, Yunnan province, People's Republic of China. There are more specific stages and attractions concentrated in whole scenic area of Stone Forest Shi Lin. Stones are merged and therefore forming some kind of wave which is still moving but not frozen. This mass looks like something alien forgotten here after dried inner sea and was awaken nowadays. The shapes remind the strange substances with will, those from Howard Lovecraft tales. It is very unusual experience to roam around and to observe cold stones tending to move to the sky or aside with unknown for us purpose. Qi Feng Dong or seven east winds area is a part of Shi Lin Stone Forest Park tourist area. Shi Lin, Kunming, Yunnan. This is the bigger part compared to others and connected to the area which is not opened for tourist. Actually, Stone Forest tourists are allowed to enter and to explore is very small in terms of all territory previously covered by sea and then formed into unique geological wonder we are admiring today. Qi Feng Dong has both connected into lines and separated stone pillars. There are more trees and bushes in contrast with previously visited areas in the scenic spot. Qi Feng Dong is giving impression that Stone Forest slowly but sinking in the green forest. 石林湖 or Shi Lin Lake which is located in Stone Forest Shi Lin, Kunming City, Yunnan province, respectively. There are two lakes in this scenic spot. One has been named Moon lake and it's located inside of scenic spot and could be considered as inner lake. Instead, the Shi Lin Lake is located right away in front of the entrance to the Stone Forest major scenic area part. Shi Lin lake could be also distinguished by long bridge acrossing the lake body with thousands of national symbol flags of People's Republic of China. The moon lake is located inside of scenic spot and adorned by thin and sharp as blade stone pillars of geological formations, I do not know how to name it correctly. Impressive, yes.
