2025 Shibukawa Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in February)

I stayed at the Moriaki Ryokan in Ikaho Onsen, Gunma last summer. The ryokan is located near the stone steps of Ikaho Onsen and is quite large. The room had a small garden, and I really liked the view from the window. The food was also very delicious, and I enjoyed the ryokan's meals. The meat was especially tender and tasty, and I had multiple servings of rice, haha. There is an old-fashioned stone step street nearby, where you can enjoy sightseeing. I enjoyed the Japanese summer by eating tamakonnyaku and ramune. Although Gunma Prefecture is close to the metropolitan area, you need to take a bus from the station, so the travel by public transportation was long.

Mizusawa udon is one of the three major udon in Japan, and it has a chewy texture that goes down easily and is delicious. Udon, soup and tempura are all delicious. Hot spring water flows down the waterway in the middle of the stairs.In winter, it steams and welcomes many tourists. #fallingforfall Ikaho Stone Steps - We walked the 365 steps to the top. Fun gift shops, sweets, and restaurants along the way. Even carnival game shops on the way. Half way up is a onsen foot bath for free. Make it to the top to see the shrine. After climbing the 365 stone steps, there is Ikaho Shrine, and if you go further, you will find an open-air bath and a red arched bridge called Kajika Bridge. #couplestrip #japan

Mizusawa Temple (Mizusawa Kannon Temple) is one of the must-see attractions when traveling to Ikaho. Go up the stone steps and pass through the bright red gate to enter the temple. There are the main hall (Guanyin Hall), the Sakya Hall, a bell tower and a pagoda. The two-story hexagonal pagoda has a Vairocana Buddha statue on the second floor, and a rotating pedestal on the first floor, on which six Ksitigarbha Bodhisattvas are enshrined. Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is the patron saint of children and travelers. It is said that if you turn the base three times to the left, you will have good luck. Omori is a convenient district to stay. Many restaurants open until late night, convenience stores are at every corner. There are a few big drugstores too. My favorite part is Donki! It’s about 10 mins walk from Omori station and it’s open until 3am!
